FTTN -> FTTP | (connecting FTTN but NBN tech said I could get FTTP)

I have just done a knockdown and rebuild and I am having the NBN connected today to the new house. When I called Telstra, they said that I could get FTTN. I just bumped into the NBN installers connecting the NTD to the house. They asked why I was getting FTTN and not FTTP.

I told them that was the fastest that was offered by all the telco's I called. They then showed me the pit in front of my house and the Fibre line running 10m from my front door. They said all I had to do was call NBN and ask them to hook into it.

I can't find a number for NBNco and the online support sent me to Telstra. Telstra said that they can only go off what they see on their system, which is FTTN.

Has anyone been in a similar situation or knows who I can call or what I need to say to Telstra to hook up to the FTTP?

What can I do to get the lowest international latency possible?

I game internationally on a bunch of different games and I need the lowest latency I can get.

I know some steps I can do are:

  • FTTP
  • Ethernet

But what else? Is there a best ISP for low latency? I'm using TPG at the moment.

EDIT: The location I need low ping to the most is Ashburn VA.

Gigabit fttp - router recs wifi primary (no ethernet ports in house)

Upgrading to NBN1000 from NBN50.

I know theoretically I won't get anywhere near the 1000Mbps on wifi, however the difference between NBN250 and 1000 is fuck all that I can justify paying the extra $10 a month.

Use: WFH, media server (local access and also access offsite) and associated downloads and torrents and local streaming, occassional gaming.

House: average 3 bed 2 bath with a couple internal brick partitions, current Deco E4 struggles to reach my bedroom because of it despite it being only 6m away, so currently utilising a Deco satellite in the bedroom. No ethernet ports whatsoever and not willing to install as we rent.

Wants: VPN configurable, adguard home configurable, prefer something that doesn't need additional satellite nodes to reach the bedroom, fastest speeds possible, preferably something small/discreet rather than something with a billion lights and massive antennae.

Budget: $300ish

Currently have a NBN 100 plan with internode and using a PYTHON - Dual Band Wireless AC1600 Gigabit ADSL2+/VDSL2 Modem Router . I’ve had this modem router for a bout 5-6 years and believe it’s just outdated . Looking for suggestions if I should just get a router instead of modem router ?Will a newer mid tier router be better than my current ?

Cost of replacing faulty ethernet ports in house?

Hi guys, anyone know the rough cost for replacing faulty ethernet ports? I have FTTP, NTD is in the "basement" of sorts, I have it connected via a router -> switch to 6 ethernet ports which then go to various parts of the house. I have 6 total ports. 4 of the 6 have gigabit download speeds, 2 of the 6 ports however are maxing out at 100mbps. The annoying thing is one of the ports is in the office where I need it the most.... It's not the cables, because the same cable is getting good speeds elsewhere. I am thinking there may be some faulty wiring on 2 of the 6 ports.

I've asked an electrician to come have a look on Monday, but so I don't get ripped off, how much does it usually cost to replace? I imagine the cabling might be a bit complicated because the NTD is 2 stories below the rooms I need replacing.

Any advice appreciated,

Recently Subdivided Block (4 houses) - No NBN Access for any of us

Hi all,

Complicated scenario incoming and looking for advice if possible. A few months ago, we bought and moved into a relatively new house on a subdivided block of 4 houses, all of which were also built in the last couple of years and with a shared community titled driveway. Unfortunately, I soon discovered that nobody has been able to connect to the NBN since moving in. For reference I live in Adelaide 30 minutes south of the CBD in a suburb where everybody else has had access to NBN (albeit FTTN) for years, including every other house on our street except for the 4 of us who are unlucky enough to be living on this subdivided block.

I initially tried to get connected with TPG, and recently with Superloop with their websites saying that our address appears to be eligible for FTTN with a free FTTP upgrade. All up, I've had 4 technicians come out and fail to get us connected with the most recent technician providing us with a fairly detailed report of the situation which I will paste below.

"The site is a new development of 4 houses. Currently, none of the properties have internet access via the NBN network, as the lead-in conduits are not connected to the lead-in pit. The lead-in pit was recently installed by NBN contractors at the block's entrance, but they didn’t find any lead-in conduit to connect.

According to the owner of Unit 1, the initial builder may have left the conduit buried under the concrete driveway. I measured the existing lead-in line, which runs approximately 21 meters under concrete from the PCD in the middle of the driveway, but it is still unconnected about 20 meters away from the lead-in pit.

For the installation to proceed, the builder will need to install and connect the lead-in conduits for all four houses. Once this is complete, we can move forward with a full installation.

Please note that a new 2-pair cable and PCDs have already been installed by a previous technician for Unit 1."

Provided site plan picture from Fairmont Homes indicating where our conduit should lead

Now, Superloop has advised us that they can't proceed with the NBN installation until we contact our builder (Fairmont Homes in this case) and get them to finish the lead in conduit for all 4 houses. Although we weren't the original builders of this house, I did manage to get in contact with Fairmont homes, but they have advised us that they're not responsible for any of the cabling outside the house or for the shared driveway.

I spoke to our neighbour across from us who built their house before we moved in, and he ran into similar issues with getting anybody to take accountability. I believe he managed to speak to the people who laid the concrete for the driveway as he suspected they crushed the conduit underneath but of course they denied responsibility. He also got sick of going around in circles and ended up settling for 5G Home internet which I've also been using so far.

I think that paints a picture of where we're at. Unfortunately, it seems all 4 of us are doomed to a life of 5G forever as this issue seems like it's far too hard to rectify. Does anybody have any ideas as to where we go from here?

12 months of issues with my ISP and I want to make sure it’s not on my end. Who do I get to check the wiring in my house (20yo house) for my FTTN service? Sparky? ISP won’t send anyone out.

Does Leaptel provide dynamic ipv6 address?

Hi,

I have been using Leaptel for a while. I remember they support Ipv6. But recently, when I check with https://whatismyipaddress.com/, it says it cannot detect my ipv6 address.

Also, on my Windows systems and Android systems, the Ipv6 addresses they got all starts with fda0 which are local addresses.

I checked my Leaptel service status, and it says I have IPv6 support turned on. But I did not enable static ipv6 address.

My router is Google WiFi, and I am sure it supports Ipv6.

Thanks

Best Provider Southern Highlands NSW?

As the title says, who are some of the best/ most reliable providers around the Southern Highlands?

Looking at NBN 25/10, possibly 50 if price is close enough, but service and reliability is the most important factor

Recondition for cheap 50/20 FTTP with fixed IP

So I am in an area that can upgrade from copper node to full fiber, I did some looking around and found the exetel and leaptel both had 50mb plan for $80 (sadly this is my limit with other house hold members). The only problem is that I need a fixed ip to be able to use my openvpn connection back to my homelab service use.

Exetel does look good as from what I can find, are part of superloop backed, and use an ipv6 address. For everyone put there, can an ipv6 connection be more then enough without needing an ipv4 address for normal browsing, but to also remote into with a vpn connection. Im planning to connect my pfsense box directly to the ntd fiber box.

Upgraded plan now no internet.

To explain I had a "old" ISP that was using uni d1 and I changed to a "new" ISP the day the old ISP was set to be disconnected, it was provisioned and active the next day on uni d2, it worked good but a month later I upgraded my plan to a faster one with my new ISP and was told to then use uni d1, I come home from work today and as expected my internet wasn't working caus I it was in uni d2, I switched to uni d1 expecting it to just work but it didn't, I've factory reset my router (netgear rax20) and made sure everything was correct like three times (it is) I was then on the phone to technical support for an hour and a half, they had me enabled vlan/bridge with ID 2 priority 0, didn't work, then had me preform another factory reset and make sure my username and password were correct, which obviously didn't work, they reset my nbn on their end like 5 times in the process and couldn't get it working, they have escalated it but being the weekend now I probably won't have internet for 3 days, I contacted netgear and they basically gave me the run around cause my router is out of the 90 day warranty period, does anyone here have any idea or experience with this?

Bit more info I'm using PPPoE, my router is fine but no I don't have another one I can try unfortunately, I'm stumped and at a standstill.

Best option to set up access points in home (FTTP NBN - 1000/50 network plan)

Hi all,

Wanting to see suggestions for the best network for a 2 story 5 5-bedroom home. I'm new at networking but when we moved in, I connected the NBN box (god thankyou its FTTP), to a Xiaomi AX1800 router, then connected to a server rack I set up with a network switch connecting to camera server and to rj45 ports which are located around the house. Theres a second AX1800 upstairs connected as a AP to the first, but this network has been pretty lacking in range, with signifcant blindspots (as for context the server rack is in a closet in the middle of the house all the cables terminate there).

I dont want to waste the Xiaomi AX1800s and if possible want to use them as APs for a new router. Idealy would want a router to connect to nbn, 2 APs downstairs, and one upstairs. Would love to hear ideas for whats possible for a couple hundred (can not afford Ubiquit /such APs unfortunately) EDIT: Not my home just helping a friend out. For less than $500 not a couple hundred

Happy to provide more info/details thanks!

Should I get a new modem?

Recently have been experiencing frequent drop outs. The wifi connection is there but I get the "no internet" error. Recently upgraded to FTTP and still using the modem given to us by our provider. Have had this kind of issue in the past and when contacting our provider they just sell us a newer version of their modem. This happened every 2-3 years. Should we get a modem not from our provider or should we just get a newer one from our provider?

Does the old copper system still work one FTTP is installed?

Long story short, I live in a big share house (5 people) including one person in a granny flat. We have the old system, and the only way for the person to get internet in the granny flat is setting up the router at the back of the house in the back bedroom. We have a mesh system but struggles to reach everyone and online gaming is a nightmare.

I have FTTP being installed on Monday, however I have a feeling they will install it at the front of the house, where there living areas are etc and near the other bedrooms. I think with the router there, even with the mesh it wont reach the granny flat.

Basically my question is, could we have the existing router plugged into the old copper system running our internet plan, and I sign up with a new ISP hooked into the NBN? I'd be happy to pay for the extra as I WFH and want it for gaming!

I know you can connect up to four into the FTTP box but the cable would have to go past two doors and down a flight of stairs to get it into the back bedroom.

Also if you have other recommendations on how to set it up for a house like mine, please let me know

Telecomm rant- Why are they removing 3g when they barely have 4g up and running

I'm aware this is an NBN sub but I am just annoyed. I lived maybe 15km outside a major city in QLD and am unfortunately am reliant on wireless for my internet. That's the breaks. But why are they removing the 3g network which is actually reliable when the 4g network is the absolute worst. I don't live particularly far from Brisbane but I might as well live on the moon in regards to connecting to telecomm infrastructure. This country has the worst infrastructure in the world

Going through new NBN FTTP development application process! Help!

Hey everyone Bit of a weird situation I just bought a brand new townhouse in a group of 3 FTTP rolled out to the original property (which was demolished and subdivided) It looks like the builder made the place NBN ready but didn't actually go through the application process with NBNCO Has anyone been in a similar situation? How long did it take to get connected? I've tried going through some of the better NBN providers to see if they can manage the connection and liaise with nbnco directly but they've basically said I need to contact them. The only thing I can think of doing is going through the new development application myself? And I can't really find any useful contact info for nbnco (which I think they want so that general public doesn't inundate their inboxes

Any advice would be awesome

Can I use my foxtel hub modem with another ISP? Specifically ABB

Hi, I'm not very savy with NBN information.

I have a FTTP connection with foxtel previously but I just switched to ABB. The only modem I have is a foxtel hub modem. I'm wondering if my modem will be locked into only using foxtel or if ABB will support it.
