I'm working on the golden dome activation and can't get it to work.
I've figured out >!the number system, matched it with the base value + compensations for each color ball, set those in the system. I've also matched each island to its color and arranged the balls on the grid.!< I close the mechanism and lower myself back down to the book and... Nothing.
I've searched for hints very trepidatiously since I don't want an outright solution and nothing has helped. I even saw someone else post screenshots of being stuck in a similar way and as far as I could tell, I had the same answer as them (except randomized differently). >!Their solution was being off by 1 on a single ball!< and I've triple checked mine as a result.
I've read Gehn's notebook and searched his room a couple times over just trying to get past this point. I accidentally >!summoned Atrus early because I knew the solution to that puzzle and wanted to make progress somewhere.!<
Is there anything I'm saying that points to me obviously missing something? I don't want a solution but just enough of a push in the right direction. I can attach pictures of what I have/what I'm inputting if necessary but I'm just firing this off quickly right now.
My five year old daughter loves playing realMyst Masterpiece 2021 with me and I’m wondering what similar games she might enjoy. My computer doesn’t have the spec to play the new Riven and she doesn’t like the original version of Riven or Myst 3. I think she likes walking about, exploring stuff, and going to different worlds (very proud she is already asking to ‘link’!) which the older interface doesn’t really provide.
So, what other games might be suitable for a youngster to play that offers a similar experience to realMyst? Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Many years ago, a friend and I played through Myst and Riven together. Great memories.
I recently re-played both of them, and then started Exile a few days ago, hoping to play through the whole series (I bought Uru when it was released, but I had a tough time getting into it. I don’t exactly remember why).
Anyway, I just finished Amateria a few minutes ago. I did unfortunately use the UHS to help with the gear/rail/weight puzzle… I ended up finding out that I had missed the balance/ratio scale - the one that had three guys hanging from it. If I had noticed it, I’m sure I would have solved it without any hints. It’s frustrating when something like that happens, but that was the only time I have used hints on any puzzles so far (I have used the UHS to find goofy/obscure UI things, like a “ladder” in the stone that I walked by dozens of times without knowing it was a ladder.)
All of that to say… those were some cool puzzles, and the reward/exit animation for finishing Amateria was awesome. It was super satisfying to figure them out.
Off to Voltaic now, hoping it’s as good as that age was… wish me luck.
TL;DR - Does Riven expect you to know >!Prison Island's!< dome symbol before attempting the fire-marble puzzle, or are you just supposed to guess what it is?
TL -
Here's something niche for y'all. I've played Riven so many times that I've pretty much forgotten how the game expects you to navigate it via the information presented, so I'm doing that now just for fun. I just reached >!Gehn's underwater throne!< on Plateau Island, and I'm wondering if I've missed something.
At this point I've reached the Temple/Crater/Plateau Island domes and recorded their symbols. The next obvious one is >!Jungle Island!< since the >!maglev!< to it is nearby. That leaves only the symbol for >!Prison Island!<, and of course you can't reach that dome before completing the fire-marble puzzle anyway.
What I want to know is, does the game tell you anywhere what >!Prison Island's!< dome symbol is before attempting the puzzle? Or is it expecting you to try both of the remaining marbles to figure it out?
(Hopefully I've spoiler'd the right bits to keep this post up.)
I am currently trying to play Myst without having played it previously, in VR. A major issue is that I realised that I probably want to take notes, but doing so in headset is A MAJOR PAIN. Anyone else solve this?
I got Myst in my modded 3ds, but the cursive in the books on the shelves is so pixelated i can barely make it out... Is there somewhere else i can find what these say?
First thing:
!I'm trying to figure out the totems on jungle island and after I moved the lens on one of them, the screen started shaking and there was a rumbling noise. Did I actually trigger an event, or does this randomly happen since the Age is supposed to be deteriorating? Might sound dumb to ask but I've been playing on my Steam Deck, mostly without sound, so if it was something that randomly happens every so often, good chance I might just have not noticed it before. I looked around for anything that opened(hoping it was the whale's mouth) and couldn't find anything, which made me question if anything actually happened. A simple "yes something happened" or "no thats random" would suffice.!<
Second:
!Can any books get picked up? You get your inventory bag at the start and the one book, but if you're able to pick up any others, I haven't figured out how. I've come across a few linking books but I'm mostly thinking about the notebook in Gehn's lab. If you can pick them up - how? Also, can you pick up anything else that's needed/used in any puzzles? From what little I've looked up, you can't, but wanted to check.!<
I've been trying to find Myst Fanfictions on Wattpad without an success. Could someone tell me if there are any on Wattpad?
Does anyone else wonder if “Og” in RP1 may be named after Steve Ogden, one of the primary world builders in Myst and Riven?
I know Halliday and Morrow are thought to be loosely inspired by Jobs and Wozniak, but characters can be based on one person and named after another.
Steven Ogden’s name is at the top of the credits when you beat Riven, and his friends call him Og. Considering that the Myst team is all about creating alternate realities within game worlds, it seems they would be perfectly suited for an homage.
Has this come up before?

So. I'm currently on a hunt to acquire all German language bonus material from the MYST series for archival purposes, be it trailers or behind the Scenes videos, dubbed or subtitled.
Yesterday, I came across this early trailer for URU Live. There's also an English version of it. But does there exist a German version as well?
Also, if anybody here has the Bonus DVDs from the collectors editions, it would be cool if you let me know how much translated material is on there^^
I'm currently watching an LP of the VR version for research purposes, and the LPer commented on a bit of lore inaccuracy regarding Atrus writing the ship into Stoneship, and then justified it by saying that the lore wasn't totally fleshed out back then and that it could be nice to have a new version that follows the current established lore better.
That also made me think of how the concept of the trap books and being able to communicate through them got kinda retconned too, making the original interaction with the brothers also completely different if a lore-faithful version came out.
So anyway, my question is, how would a more accurate reimagined Myst work? How would y'all fix the lore inaccuracies? Are there any other ones besides the trap books and ship thing mentioned here? I'm still getting educated on the overall lore so forgive my stupidity in advance.
I first stumbled upon Exile when I was 7. I remember getting in J'nanin and I had no idea what the hell was going on. Finally after 20 years, (20, LONG, YEARS! ALONE! 🤣), yes 20 years, I managed to win. I let Brad Dourif go back to his precious little island and restore Narayan. Cheers with Red Cider!

Very cool technology. Imagine just being able to sketch a place and puzzles, and AI can make it into a game. Or, dare I dream, real Exile without having to wait a decade.
It's my first Myst, im playing the VR version. Already stuck on the Stoneship Age. I managed to find the big compass in the tunnels, i think i got the right button direction on it, as the lights went out and then on again, and now the battery never ends. But still, i don't know what to do now, the lights in the ship underwater are still out. I looked online and saw people recomending the Universal Hint System, it looks good, but as they are talking about the original version, somethings look different on my end. The compass itself, in the guide it says that is the button number 12 clockwise from north, and the button that worked for me was the 26. And obviously, on the guide says that the light on the ship underwater will turn on after this, and it wasn't my case. I don't know if it's a bug, im probably missing something.
I think this should be a regular type of post around here, but as i loved the first hours on the other island, it was kind displeasing to hit this point, but still don't wanna ruin the experience. Thank You.
TL;DR - Myst ME crashes on my macbook (Apple Silicon, if that matters) and it looks like it's something to do with ScummVM. Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, knows the fix?
TL -
Honestly I'd be amazed if anyone has a solution, but I figured I'd take a shot.
Most of the Myst series works fine on my M1 macbook, at least with a little fiddling, but I'm having problems with Myst: Masterpiece edition. It opens, it runs, and then after about 5 minutes of playing it crashes. It's always around 5 minutes, I've timed it.
I had no idea what might be wrong, until I installed and tried Riven just a bit ago. When I reached the 5 minute mark in Riven, the game requested access to my Documents folder. I accepted, and it hasn't crashed once.
I see "ScummVM Savegames" in my documents folder, and it has files for both Riven and Myst. My best guess here is that Myst is crashing when it tries to access something here. I just don't know how to fix it.
So yeah. Has anyone had this happen and managed to fix it?
first-time post background info: I have been hooked since my older cousin passed me the disk back in 90’s because it wasn’t his style. I bought the novels in 8th or 9th grade. I read them by the light of a little brass lamp with a colored glass mosaic dragonfly that resembled something from Riven. I was instantly hooked. Anyway, I’m significantly older now and have children of my own. With that age has come chronic pain, and virtual reality seems to have some efficacy. I’ve been so sick of movies. The themes are almost too easy to find. We started a playthrough of Uru on YouTube. I would pay for a high-definition play-through, for sure!
Started playing the Riven remake yesterday and have found it to be really fun, but now I'm sitting at the marble puzzle, 99.99% sure I've done my math right, and not getting the white button to finalize the grid.
For reference, here are some screenshots: https://imgur.com/a/jXoyWhQ
I have a base force of 9, with the compensations being -5, -1, +10, +12, and +16, placing the sliders at 4, 8, 19, 21, and 25. I've checked my knowledge of D'ni numbers several times at the schoolhouse, as well as the colors from the lights in that room under the survey island. What could I possibly be missing?
I just finished playing the Riven remake and couldn’t help but note some of changes in dialogue between the og and the remake.
For example the original game ends with this quote “>!The Age of Riven is closed forever, but the people of Riven are free.!<” and in the new version the quote is “>! The Age of Riven has come to a close, but the people of Riven are free.!<“
The change makes me wonder if the new game set in the D’ni Universe mentioned here:
will be a sequel to Riven but not the Myst III we know as Cyan has stated getting the rights to Myst III and IV are very complicated. The dropping of the word “forever” along with the >!Riven book still being in Atrus possession in Myst III!< makes me wonder if there will be some sort of sequel to Riven that involves >!returning to Riven!< in some shape or form and on some small level.
Another factor that has me thinking this is the voice recasting of Catherine, even though her lines from the original didn’t change.
Regardless of >!Riven’s!< involvement what do you think about a third Myst game from Cyan that isn’t Exile or Revelation but an entirely new story involving the Stranger, Atrus, and Cathrine?
