GUIDELINES

1. WHAT WE DO Post pics or links to studio photos. Your images should show off your space and not just a singular instrument or piece of equipment.

2. SHARING AUDIO If you would like to share the music you make in your space (encouraged!), comment with a link to soundcloud/bancamp/etc. Don't just post links to your music! We want to SEE battlestations here!

3. VIDEO RULES If you are posting a video, from Youtube, Vimeo, Instagram, etc. - LINK IT in a comment or as part of a text post - it has to focus on touring your Battlestation and showing that off. Not just a performance video or music video.

4. ASKING THE COMMUNITY Questions about studio setups, furniture, and gear are welcome. Try to be specific as to what you are looking to do, your budget, etc. for best results. PLEASE search for your question before making a new post - the same questions about desks or chairs is asked often. If your question post is removed, it is likely because it is a repeat.

5. NO PERSONAL ATTACKS Don't like something? Move on. Abusive comments will be removed. Repeated negative behavior will incur a ban.

6. OFT-DOWNVOTED or BOTLIKE ACCOUNTS WILL BE BANNED If your regular comments can't be distinguished from those of a bot, you are either a bot or a low-effort poster and will be removed.

My former workstation

Our house got hit hard by Hurricane Helene. The gear didn't get hurt, but the desk was ruined by water. I'm going to take it as an opportunity to reconstruct and improve my setup when the house is rebuilt. I've started a podcast, so I'm going to incorporate those elements, too.

Broke guy's studio trying to hold on to as many prized possessions as I can

Down to just this, my Les Paul Standard, ESP E-II Horizon II, Axe-FX III MK II, Novation 49SL MK II, Universal Audio Apollo Twin Duo, Studio Projects C1, Shure SM7B with Cloud Lifter, KRK 8 Monitors and a KRK 12" monitor Sub, tamborine, harmonica, egg shaker, one of those ridged wooden things to scrape a wooden stick on to get a lot of those "stonsey" sounds with, and a 2017 4.2ghz i7 27" 5k iMac w/16gb RAM and a 3TB fusion drive running Ableton 11, Native Instruments Komplete 12, Aturia V collection 7 and OP-XA V and Chorus Jun-6, Superior Drummer 3 (which a bunch of expansion packs), FabFilter Pro-Q2, Re:FX Nexus, Serum, Zone, iZotope Ozone 11, and tons of samples.

Used to have tons more, Gibson SG standard, LTD B4-E bass w/fishman fluence modern pickups, Peavey Fury bass with a fender 61 classic P pickup in it, martin D-28 acoustic, iz RADAR 24 track, Soundcraft ghost, RNC compressor, slew of Mic's (for tracking drum kit when I was in a band before just taking to living out of my home studio), ADAM A7 monitors, BC Rich handmade custom neck thru Beast made in the old LA BC Rich shop y Bernie Jr. before hanser holdings bought (and ruined) them, Ibanez RG, bunch of Strats, an SG with P90's, a les paul jr. double cutaway with a P90, a Fender Jim Atkins thinline semi hollowbody telecaster with seymour duncan p90's, LTD Horizon, bunch of other guitars and audio interfaces and used to use logic and digial performer and renoise, bunch of 25 key MIDI controller keyboards and one 88 weghted key one, and an EMU E4XT Ultra sample and n Oberheim OB-^ polyphonic analog synth.

But one day I looked at the like $80,000 worth of gear i'd acquired and how little i was doing with it compared to say my friend who just used $60 renoise (and before that free buzz tracker) and was signed to labels/had records out, and routinely got flown to awesome cities in europe and such and put up in hotels to play awesome breakcore shows/events and make $500-ish here and there and had an awesome 6 figure job, owned a house and was doing all this stuff I wanted to be doing with nothing more than a $60 tracker progra (and a ton of vinyl he still DJ's out with and does well) while i ws sitting on all this insanely expensive awesome geqr and doing basically nothing with it by comparrison so i sold almost all of it and went the other route trying to be more minimal and portable and just did everything in software. So i got nothing but laptops and used software then one day figured since the laptop only sat in one spot going to a 27" monitor anyway I might as well ust get sn iMac and get the extra horsepower since i ws basically always stationary, then my life fell apart and i ended up having to move a lot and have VERY little space and then of course having just the laptop instead of the big honkin 27" iMac would have been way more useful as living more portably/minmally and now the iMac is like 7 years old and starting to die off on me (had to rebuild it twice in the past 2 weeks) but i have no money and no income (long story about how my life fell apart) so I have to just keep trying to make this work as it's all i've got now.

A lil extreme for making ringtones, but here we are I guess

jk this is actually the desk at a full stack music production room that we finally finished this year. 80% mastering 20% production/mixing.

My creative daughter

My daughter loves to create, and I don't want to limit her to what we, as adults, believe a kid can or cannot do. She has surprised me in so many ways. She's 8 years old and already making music using samples on websites with her tablet. She also cuts paper and cardboard to create dragons, films them, edits the videos on CapCut, and uploads them to my Google Drive so I can post them on her YouTube channel. I'm super impressed by her creativity and want to help her take her music-making skills to the next level.

We spend 3 to 4 hours every day commuting to school, so I’m looking for a standalone device that would let her create music with samples while we’re on the go. I don't have much expertise in this area, but I want something that gives her room to grow and improve—something not specifically designed for kids, so even if it's a bit challenging at first, she can master it over time. Ideally, it would let her experiment and create music right in the car while I drive.

I’ve seen the new Ableton Move and was wondering if it's a good option. Would you recommend it, or is there anything else you think would be a better fit?

It’s a temporary setup that’s why the cables behind the monitor are not managed, any tips to improve this?

Has anyone mounted a monitor to a keyboard stand?

Rearranging my setup around a new desk, and found that it fit perfectly under this tiered keyboard stand that otherwise wouldn’t fit in the room.

Built a shelf for the lower tier, but thinking I’d now like to mount my monitor here too as it is not secure on the supplied rests. Wall mounting is an option but to get above the stand I’d be craning my neck the whole time.

Any thoughts? Cheers all!

speaker suggestions

I have this basic set up started, looking for speaker suggestions. Ideally I’d like to mount them to the top horizontal. I’m not looking at professional mixing/producing (which is pretty obvious based on my setup). I’ve been learning keyboard, and playing around with making beats, and having a blast doing it.

I’m just really struggling between what I’m hearing and making on my headphones vs what my export sounds like on the laptop speakers or phone. I thought maybe having some speakers I could use may help. I need stay quieter at night due to sleeping 4 year old and wife, but if I’m home during the day, no issues with volume, I can blast away. I’d also like to be able play things over the speakers when my daughter wants to play around or dance.

Been eyeballing an open box JBL 305 set, or maybe iloud micro? Open to suggestions but really want to stay under $200

Current equipment: Digitakt mk1 Roland GO keys 3 U-Phoria UMC204HD BT 880 pro headphones Using a 3-4 year old gaming laptop when I need a computer

I appreciate any advice or input

Limited space for workstation - is blue desk placement significantly better than green desk placement?

Neither space is optimal for music, but it’s what I have to work with. I’m considering moving from blue room to green room. Is this a terrible idea or worth trying out?

Blue option is about 8x8’ corner of a larger bedroom space. This is the only desk placement that works in this room. It’s under a sloped ceiling. This is my current setup but since it’s my bedroom, I have to be mindful of my partner, usually meaning I’m using headphones 50% of the time. And constantly setting gear up and putting it back away to keep tidy.

Green option is basically a large closet at about 7x7’. It’s “my” room and I can use it however I want. I can leave gear setup however I like here. Currently it’s a hangout/reading space that I enjoy spending time in. The desk could be moved to the rightmost wall if that’s notably better.

I’m using a few grooveboxes, a modular case, laptop, on either Adam T5V monitors or Beyerdynamic 880 headphones.
