Community tags:

We organize information by using a tag and flair system for easy topic-sorting, archival, being able to tell what posts are about quickly, and to limit bot activity. When making a post, you must type one of the [tags] from the list below into your title or the AutoModerator will reject it. You can select additional flair from the dropdown as well. If you try to make up your own tag the post will be rejected.

Tag Background
[Gourmet] The main subject involves gourmet species (Lions Mane, Oysters, Shiitake, Maitake, Agaricus, Nameko, etc.)
[Medicinal] The main subject deals with classically medicinal species (Reishi, Turkey Tail, Chaga, etc.). This is not for "magic" mushrooms.
[Actives] If your post involves cultivation of "magic" mushrooms, use this tag. This tag supersedes all others if a psychedelic spp. is involved, regardless of relevance to other tags.
[General] Use this tag if your post doesn’t quite fit with the other topics, or to encourage general discussion.
[Freebies] If you want to hold a contest, or post a related idea/question, tag your post with this.
[Trade] If you have a trade request, use this. Please be sure you're abiding by the community rules governing trades. Spore prints of “magic” spp. are OK, but living cultures are not allowed.
[Technique] Discussion focused on cultivation methods/techniques should use this.
[Contamination] Use this tag if you have questions about contamination.
[Article] If you have a fungi-related scholarly resource, pop-sciemce article, or periodical, use this tag.
[Business] Anything related to running a mushroom business, like scaling up, selling fruits at market, etc., should use this tag.
[Now Hiring] If you're looking to hire someone for your mushroom business, or know someone who is, use this tag.
[Meet up] If you’re interested in connecting with members of the community in your area, or are looking for a helping hand for the spring inoculation season, use this tag.

Words of Caution:

Be mindful of what you share and how to protect your privacy.

We can't stress this enough: Trading/Soliciting for living cultures or dried material of Schedule I/Restricted fungi, or telling someone to eat an unknown mushroom will result in a ban. There will be no warnings for this activity. "I didn't know..." or "it was just a joke" are not legitimate excuses. There are some grey areas and some very clear red areas when it comes to this subject matter. Don’t be selfish and put the community in danger by going into the red.

[general] cobweb mold

I see a lot of people panicking about this. I’m on my 1st full grow cycle now (I did a fruiting block before to learn about misting and watching to see what growth looks like first hand as well as some tasty oysters) but I’m curious how common is this? It seems like once you get to FC you either have it dialed in or tric shows up. But I see a lot of people ask if it’s cobweb mold and I don’t think I’ve once seen someone say yes. When I get to Colonization stage is this something I really need to watch for vigilantly? Or is it rare enough I should assume mycelium until proven otherwise?

[contamination] This is my first time attempting to grow any mushrooms. I’ve been growing these oyster mushrooms for about 3 days, followed the kit instructions exactly. Now they look a bit grey. Are they contaminated?

[Technique] Bucket Tek works great

If you are just starting with oysters try the bucket Tek. Using a 5 gallon bucket, Martha tent, humidifier, and a fan for FAE. In the bucket I’m using just straw that I pasteurized with boiling water. Waited about two weeks and having great results. Works like a charm.

[General] back to the roots box

I bought this oyster mushroom grow box from target. When I opened the box it appeared to have sprouted on its own outside of the bag. What do I do with it? Break off the growth and start from the beginning? Take it back to target for a refund? I’ve never done this before and would like some advice.

[Gourmet] Tillamook Bay Oyster Mushrooms - 4th generation off Wild Clone

Pleurotus pulmonarius group. Found growing off Western Hemlock last spring on the Tillamook Coast in Oregon.

I'm just now getting around to cloning for size. Speed was first for obvious reasons. Turns out wild oyster clones can take just as long to colonize as lion's mane unless you help them out a little.

They taste amazing. Quite possibly the best oysters I've ever eaten. They have a very pungent licorice smell which is really sweet to enjoy when they still have the blue halos on their caps.

I have some Willamette River alder oysters and Pacific City scotchbroom oysters coming up next and I hope both will be just as much of a treat as these.

[Technique] Will my humidifier inevitably cause contamination? How can I avoid it?

I've gone through so many sanitation steps. Everything has been cleaned to the best of my abilities. I've even had a really solid first grow. As I approach my second grow it dawns on me, am I introducing TONS of bacteria into my monotub through the humidifier that I’ve e made NO modifications to. Even using simple tap water. This can't be good. Idk how the first grow even worked. This has to be terrible for it... Am I wrong?

I get that I could simplify my setup and get rid of the humidifier completely but I am a dork and I love automating stuff, it’s s just for me, it’s s just for fun. So is there a way to keep the humidifier but reduce possibility of contamination? Or am I really just being stubborn and should just get rid of it and start misting by hand. 🍄 ☮️

First time running these. I like them. They just keep popping up. I've been harvesting 5-10 pieces at a time for 3 weeks now. 😆 anybody else have this experience with this variety?

[technique] Getting autoclave

I finally pulled the trigger and I'm picking up my autoclave tomorrow. I wouldn't have gotten it without considerable research but we learn in conversations, too.

Have you made this leap?

Is the dwell time the same as a pressure cooker? For example, is 30 mins in a PC the same as 30 mins in an autoclave?

Can you offer any advice on the proper care and feeding of an autoclave?

Any cautionary tales or other "teaching moments"?

This is like, a full Level 5 on the Excited AF scale. Can't wait!

[general] any use the trayless Bag cordy tek?

I’m a little confused on the aquarium pump to inflate the grow bag. How was a syringe connected to the aquarium pump tube ? Wouldn’t a stronger aquarium pump be better and faster?

[Contamination] What did It wrong ?

Hey Redditors hope you're doing well.

So,I've made a T2 with a perfectly colonized agar dish into these new ones.

I've done the exactly same moves than the previous but the result as you see it's very poor.

10/10 contaminated.

10 gr agar 10 gr yeast 2  gr carbon active.

What you think it might be the reason aside not fighting the dirt?

Could I reuse the agar ? I don't like the idea of throwing away material.

Thanks

[general] 2nd week and 0 signs of mycelium

Hey there, it has been 2 weeks since I poured the LC in the sterilized grain with a new, sterilized needle, should I try again or keep waiting for it to work? I know I did used a lot of LC because I used half of a brand new siringe for the LC kit and the other half in the grain.

[Technique] Question about spore usage and conditions

[First time poster here (and my first time growing mushrooms as well), I hope the post is in line with the community's standards.]

Dear all, I need some help: I got hold of some liquid spore vials, which I intend to put into use soon. One vial (McKennai) has been sitting in my fridge for 4 months or so now; it's clear as water and has no traces of mycelium growing inside. The other two (Golden teachers; Colombian) were bought two days ago from a smart shop, and spent 24hours outside the fridge (I was not home). These two have clear traces of mycelium developing inside--web-like formations floating in the liquid.

As I plan to try my hand at growing, my question is: should I use the older vial (which has been sitting in the fridge for a while with no visible traces of mycelium), or one of the other two (recently bought, but with traces of mycelium clearly visible)? I would like to make the best out of all of them, without wasting them or letting them sit in the fridge for too long. Any suggestions in this regard?

Does the colour of your LED'S affect mycelium or fruits at all? [General]

I read something online that red is detrimental but, blue is beneficial. Is this true?

Or for instance I've also read that they prefer blue light becuase it mimcs what sort of light they thrive in nature but, do other colours such as red or green make a difference? I'm asking as I have an LED strip bar which is made up of those 3 colours to produce a cold white light close to 6500k
