Community tags:

We organize information by using a tag and flair system for easy topic-sorting, archival, being able to tell what posts are about quickly, and to limit bot activity. When making a post, you must type one of the [tags] from the list below into your title or the AutoModerator will reject it. You can select additional flair from the dropdown as well. If you try to make up your own tag the post will be rejected.

Tag Background
[Gourmet] The main subject involves gourmet species (Lions Mane, Oysters, Shiitake, Maitake, Agaricus, Nameko, etc.)
[Medicinal] The main subject deals with classically medicinal species (Reishi, Turkey Tail, Chaga, etc.). This is not for "magic" mushrooms.
[Actives] If your post involves cultivation of "magic" mushrooms, use this tag. This tag supersedes all others if a psychedelic spp. is involved, regardless of relevance to other tags.
[General] Use this tag if your post doesn’t quite fit with the other topics, or to encourage general discussion.
[Freebies] If you want to hold a contest, or post a related idea/question, tag your post with this.
[Trade] If you have a trade request, use this. Please be sure you're abiding by the community rules governing trades. Spore prints of “magic” spp. are OK, but living cultures are not allowed.
[Technique] Discussion focused on cultivation methods/techniques should use this.
[Contamination] Use this tag if you have questions about contamination.
[Article] If you have a fungi-related scholarly resource, pop-sciemce article, or periodical, use this tag.
[Business] Anything related to running a mushroom business, like scaling up, selling fruits at market, etc., should use this tag.
[Now Hiring] If you're looking to hire someone for your mushroom business, or know someone who is, use this tag.
[Meet up] If you’re interested in connecting with members of the community in your area, or are looking for a helping hand for the spring inoculation season, use this tag.

Words of Caution:

Be mindful of what you share and how to protect your privacy.

We can't stress this enough: Trading/Soliciting for living cultures or dried material of Schedule I/Restricted fungi, or telling someone to eat an unknown mushroom will result in a ban. There will be no warnings for this activity. "I didn't know..." or "it was just a joke" are not legitimate excuses. There are some grey areas and some very clear red areas when it comes to this subject matter. Don’t be selfish and put the community in danger by going into the red.

Overlay issue preventing growth [actives]

Ive had my all in one grow bag in fruiting conditions for a little over 2 weeks, but no pins. I may have waited too long to fruit and have some thick overlay. Any recommendations? Thanks.

[gourmet] How long does it take from initial inoculation to harvest?

I'm trying to determine how much space I need to reliably produce an average of 2 pounds of mushrooms a day.

Say I inoculate a 5lb bag of rye with lion's mane liquid culture. I let it fully colonize. How long will that take? Then I use some of that grain spawn to inoculate a 5 lb bag of sawdust with some wheat germ. How long will it be until I can harvest? Add those two together and I'll get long it takes from initial inoculation to harvest.

What would be the difference if I made a 3 pound grain spawn bag? If I made a 3 pound grow bag? Would one pound grain spawn bags be feasible?

I also want to grow shiitake, chestnuts, italian oyster, black king, king trumpet, and maybe a few others. Which take longer and which take less time?

Would it be better to harvest the first flush then move on to the next grow bag or wait for the second flush?

I'm looking for a ballpark idea of now much monotub and grow tent space I'll need. So would it be better to use all grow tents, or should I use monotub for certain varieties or for grain spawn or grow bags?

I know I have a lot of questions here. I would appreciate any help with this.

How to maintain temperature? [actives]

I'm planning to grow actives in a warm climate. What should I do to maintain temperature for liquid culture and agar plate and for spawning and fruiting. Can I do it inside a refrigerator? Or is temperature regulation not really that important? The temperature fluctuates between 26 to 28 degree celsius.

[technique] moist smell in my mushroom jar one day after dehydrating. Are they trash?

29g dehydrated at 105 degrees for 24 hours. The stems were a little spongy under the cap area, but thought was just due to the hole in the center. Now 24hr after drying they have a moist/moldy smell in the jar. Put them right back in the dehydrator. Are they trash?? Are they salvageable? Going to dry again for 12 hours and see if there is a smell.

[Gourmet] Low FAE Lions Mane

After stalling out in the low humidity Colorado air I covered with ziploc bag and set in a shallow water pool. Boom, the humidity jacked up so they grew in. Can't tend to them enough to remove bag every day. Any other suggestions? Do the properties (other than looks) change with low air exchange? Photo in comments.

Different strain same tub [actives]

Hi all,

New grower here. I have a round of pf tek jars going right now that are very healthy and doing well. I went out to get more syringes cuz I want to start another round and ended up getting two different strains. So I guess what I was wondering is if it’s okay or possible to fruit two different strains in the same terrarium out of cakes or if that’s a no no. I couldn’t find any info online so I came here.

TIA

[Gourmet] Feel like I did something wrong here

Kit has been sitting on a shelf at 68-72F and ~30% rH. I’ve been spraying around 4-5 times a day to counteract the low rH. Any advice would appreciated

[Actives] stressed Mycelium in the thb

My B+ tubs are running happily and healthy for the most part. I have one corner in a tub starting to show some yellowing. I’ve tried to add a little water to the sides of the cake around the yellow corner hoping a little extra water would help the mycelium in that area.

Any suggestions on how to help the area stay healthy for the rest of the flush?

Is this pinning? Also smells really earthy and it’s a little dark but it’s all white. [actives]

Is this pinning? Or am I tripping

B+ Starting to show their faces🫠🎳 [Actives]

Ignore that little patch on the sub to the right it was slight bruised after I dropped my fucken mini air conditioner fan on the sub like 3 days ago but it’s pinning as normal and keeping an eye the discolouring is just the recovery process of the mycelium.

For reference this was :

Inoculated - 17/12/2024

 S2B - 21/01/2025

So this photograph is about 11 days after S2B

what would happen if i plant some cultivated mushroom to the forest [contamination]?

idk if that's the right tag but anyway. there are a lot of mushrooms in this forest, not sure if they are edible. i was wondering would it hurt the mushrooms there if i planted some store bought edible mushrooms in a couple places? is it a bad idea?
