NBD and first MTB

Caught the itch a couple years ago after a boy's trip to Cuyuna but never made the leap to purchase one for myself because I didn't think there were many opportunities to ride in the area of the state I live in. Earlier this year I learned that was a bad assumption and there's plenty within a short drive of my house.

After a bunch of looking around and test rides I ended up with this Frankenbike I found on pinkbike, it's an Intense 951 Trail with a Shimano SLX/XT groupset, Code RSC brakes, Line Comp 30 wheels, and Bontrager 200mm dropper. It needed some love after I got it, but I finally took it out yesterday and rode around the yard for a bit, and I just can't wait to get it out on the trail.

Fox 34 or Fox 36?

Curious what the group thought about this. I’m looking to upgrade my suspension. Currently have a Lyric select+ 140mm on a Revel Rascal.

I live in Texas. My most typical rides are closer to long cross country trails, however, there are A LOT of techie rocky dissents. I’ll mix it up and do some gnarly drops and jumps every now and then. But I am by no means a super shredder. But generally more peddling and climbing.

I’m also not a small guy, 6’4 230lbs.

My two thoughts should I go for a Fox 34 140mm to go for something lighter cause I’m generally putting in more miles or should I go for a Fox 36 140mm to have something more robust cause I’m a bigger guy. I’m not married either way. Thoughts??

Sidenote, this is my only bike, not in a position to have a fleet in my garage ( I wish though lol )

Several months after a MTB accident and finally back on the bike

Early last year I got myself a MTB after many years of not riding a bike... A week after I ended up in an accident due to misjudging my own judgement as being anxiety not me actually assessing my skill level correctly. I went on a feature I was not experienced enough for and ended up going over the handlebars, hitting the back of my head and the right side of my body and ended up with a four hour ER visit, I was left with scarring and an old injury being set off severely due to the accident.

A month or so after the accident, when I felt mostly better, I tried to get back on my mountain bike.... Two blocks away from home I had a panic attack and had to go back.... I did not touch the bike after that because the panic attack had rocked me.

This past month I have tried to get back on my bike and have taken smaller steps than when I got the bike and I am proud to say I am starting to get my confidence back up again. I am proud of how far I have gotten in a month and can't wait to continue to progress at my own speed.

Hero dirt incoming?

So what do the Californian's think about all the water that President Trump so wisely released? Can't wait for it to get transported to where it's needed!

Accidentally cut my front brake line too short, is there any other options for brakelines for Hayes dominion A4 brakes?

Or do I need to use there brand /banjo bolt? Basically I can only turn my handlebars 160 degrees. Worried it will bind if I crash or something, Seems it will only effect me if I crash

Trek Marlin 6 Derailleur Replacement

I was wondering if anyone knows what the price for replacing the rear derailleur on a stock Marlin 6 would be like? I bought the bike probably 5-6 years ago and finally had a catastrophic part failure (rear derailleur blew up) all these years later. Trying to figure out if it is worth repairing the bike or if I should just replace it at this point. Appreciate any insight!

Looking to replace my old Trek Fuel.

Hey there. New to the sub and looking to get back into the mountain bike scene. Been riding road a lot and would like to cross train a bit better for dirt biking. I have a super old full suspension trek fuel from like 1999 that I want to finally hang up and upgrade. I’m currently wanting to prioritize just getting out on trails over having the latest greatest, I’m also not the biggest downhill guy but I could see myself riding some trails with buddies if it came to it.

I found a 2016 Diamondback release 2 with upgraded fox suspension and other little bits here and there for $600. Looks to be in great shape and my size.

There’s so much information to sift through with modern bikes it just feels a bit overwhelming and I want to make a decent purchase. I’ve seen some other specialized bikes and other brands for sale in the sub 1k range but they’ll probably go up as we get closer to spring.

Any help is appreciated!

the two bikes in question.

Canadians Unite

I’m sure I’ll get some downvotes for this…..

To our American friends, fellow riders, we love you but it’s time to take a temporary break. Like that drunk uncle at Thanksgiving that says something offensive dividing the family. We’re still family, we’ll unite again someday.

The actions of your leadership has made it ever more important for us Canadians to support our local homegrown companies.

Fellow Canadians as we gear up for the upcoming riding season please make an effort to support our own. I’ll start a list of Canadian companies, as you comment and add them I’ll edit my post and add to the list:

Norco, Rocky Mountain, Devinci, Project 321, Knolly, Chromag, One-Up, We Are One, Nobl Wheels, Akta, 7Mesh, NF, Vorsprung, North Shore Billet, 9point8, Blackspire,Banshee, Archibald, Forbidden

And goes without saying, support your LBS!!

Edit- seems I may have hit a nerve with some. Was hoping the drunk uncle analogy would set the light-hearted intent. Just hoping we could support some homegrown talent. Cheers

Flat vs clip

OK, I’ll try to keep this as short as possible. I’ve been mounting biking now for going on 30 years always clipping in rock Gardens jumps whatever. Tried a couple of times to use platform pedals and for some reason every time I hit a jump, I don’t stay with the bike so what I’m asking for is can anybody give me a clue as how the hell I stay on the bike when I’m taking jumps even small hummocks without losing my feet on the pedals

Looking for a solid bike

Looking for opinions on a solid mountain bike. I'm not looking to spend more than $500 but want a bike that can handle some relatively rough riding. Specialized looks like it's in relatively good shape and the drt is basically new.

A couple options I've seen. (Marketplace) 2006 Specialized s works (REI) stumpjumper ($400) or 2022(or 23) coop drt 1.1 ($400)

LBS around here don't have bikes under $2k, which is well above my limit for now.

Thoughts?

Groupset for m5120 deore?

Hey everyone, I just bought an M5120 rear derailleur and planning to buy koozer xm490 pro non boost or boost and i dont know what to choose, but I don't have any other components yet no shifter, cassette, or crankset. I'm looking to build a durable and reliable 2x setup. Would you recommend 2x11 or 2x10, and what shifter, crankset, and cassette would work best for smooth shifting and good climbing performance? I ride a mix of trails and climbs, so any advice or recommendations would be appreciated!

Tubeless

I cannot get tubeless tire setup right. It's like a magic I don't have. I did my son's front wheel, retaped, replaced the rim, inflated... Leaking. From the spokes.

Bike store replaces the inner stem seal, now it holds. I get an extra inner stem seal from them, redo the rear tire. New tape, new tire, new sealant, new stem seal.... Leaking right out the spokes, like last time.

Wtf, I am doing it right, I am doing what they do! I've been trying to get this right so long It is making me question reality.

Edit

So despite what literally everyone had to say on this, it was not the tape. The leak was caused by a rubber grommet on the outside of the rim. It prevented me from tightening the stem nut properly. So caution everyone, the wisdom of the crowd may not exist. And don't put a rubber grommet on the outside of your rim... That seems like a good idea but it's not

Help with a Budget Enduro

Hey everyone,

I’m looking to buy a second-hand Enduro mountain bike for under £1000 and would love some recommendations! I’m hoping to find something durable with solid suspension, good geometry, and decent components for trail riding and tackling more technical terrain. If anyone has suggestions on specific models, brands, or things to look out for when buying used, I’d really appreciate the input.

Thanks in advance!
