Graduate Assistantships

Hey y’all. International student from Canada looking to apply to Missouri State. I got a tour and they mentioned my tuition could be completely covered along with them paying me about $1400 USD/mo if I get a student assistantship position. Does anyone have experience with this? is it true? Also any Canadians out there with experience studying/working in the USA on a TN visa?

Thanks!

Lease takeover in Springfield, Mo

I am currently looking for someone to take over my part of a lease at the Kensington Lodges. Rent is $568 which includes water and wifi. Electricity is separate. You would have a private room with large walk in closet and bathroom to yourself. Laundry in unit, gated community, fitness center, pools. You would also be living with 2 guys and a cat who are very easy going. If you’re interested I can send pictures and any other info you need!

Is being an RA worth it??

I’m a freshman and im torn on being an ra or not. I’m paying for a decent chunk of my college, so free food and a free room is making me consider it. I spoke with my ra about it but it felt like she was just trying to recruit me, yk? I know it’s a lot of work but I just need someone to tell me if it’s actually worth it.

Resume & Interview Survey

Hi everyone!

I am an HR professional in The US (Midwest) and I am hoping to connect with recent college grads (1-2 years out of college) or soon-to-be grads on the topic of resume writing and interview preparation.

I have a survey below of some questions and would appreciate feedback if anyone wants to share answers to some or all questions below. Feel free to reply on the thread or answer in a DM if you prefer.

Thanks for your time!

Resume Writing and Review:

1.      What resources did your college provide for resume writing assistance?

2.      Did you use these resources? Why or why not?

3.      What was most challenging for you when creating your resume the first time?

4.      Did you create your resume on your own or was there a class assignment that required you to complete one?

5.      If it was a class assignment, what feedback or guidance was given about your resume?

6.      How confident did you feel about your first version of your resume?

7.      Did you use AI to create your resume and/or cover letter?

Interview Preparation:

8.      How does your college help students prepare for job interviews?

9.      Have you participated in any mock interviews through your college? If so, how helpful were they? What kind of feedback did you receive through this process that was helpful? Was there any feedback that was not helpful or that you did not understand?

10.  What additional interview preparation support would you find valuable through your college?

11.  Think about the first few interviews that you completed. What were you not prepared to answer? Where did you feel the least confident? Where did you feel the most confident?

12.  How do you typically prepare for an interview?

Job Fairs:

13.  Have you attended any job fairs? Why or why not?

14.  What was your experience like at these job fairs?

15.  What improvements would you suggest for college job fairs?

General Career Services:

16.  Overall, how satisfied are you with your college's career services?

17.  What career preparation services do you wish your college offered?

18.  Have you used any online or third-party career services? If so, which ones?

19.  How much would you be willing to pay for professional resume writing (resume creation and formatting services) or mock interview prep services?

20.  What factors would influence your decision to use a paid career preparation service?

Job Search Process:

21.  How do you typically search for job opportunities?

22.  What has been your biggest challenge in finding relevant job openings?

23.  Did you come into contact with any scam opening? If so, how were they advertised and how did you know it was a scam?

Current Job:

24.  What was the biggest surprise or shock you experienced when starting your first job?

25.  Looking back, what skills do you wish you had developed more during college?

26.  How well did your college education prepare you for the realities of your current job?

27.  What aspects of workplace culture were you least prepared for?

28.  How does the work-life balance in your current job compare to your expectations?

29.  What challenges did you face in transitioning from academic life to professional life?

30.  What resources or support do you wish you had access to during your job search and first months of employment?

Historical Information:

31.  What year did you graduate?

32.  What was/is your major?

Study areas on Saturday nights

I’ve been using the library to study, but the weekend hours aren’t ideal since I prefer to study at night. Are there any campus buildings with study areas open after 6 p.m. on Saturdays? Thanks for any suggestions

Desk Size in Hutchens

I’m moving into Hutchens for the fall semester and wondering if I can bring my gaming computer. The Hutchens desks have shelves in them, which heavily limit desk space. Would it be possible to fit a small monitor underneath the shelf? What’s the relative height of the area between the shelf and desk?

Interested in Being a Mod?

Hey all!

If you haven't noticed, we've gotten a little bit of an uptick in posts on this subreddit since re-opening to the public. As alumni and as a mod, I'd like to see this place do better in general. I think reddit can still a good platform to help prospective and current students, staff, alumni and maybe even fans of our sports teams connect with similar interests. Sharing events, experiences, helpful information for new students, and all things MSU related is how that happens. And while not at the level you would see at a sister-subreddit like r/Mizzou, we've already seen a bump in new posts over the summer. Growth in a community should also lead to growth in leadership.

To be blunt, I believe I am the only "active mod" here, and I'm not around nearly as often as needed to moderate this community by myself. I'm also about 12 year removed from being a student or part of the staff at MSU. I believe for this subreddit to become a helpful resource and continue to be positive community, it needs more input and oversight from those who still have a strong connection to Missouri State. That is why I'm looking to add to our mod staff, not just to help with catching spam and irrelevant posts, but also for those that want to contribute to our little corner of reddit.

If you would like to become a mod at this subreddit, please DM me with the following questionnaire filled out:

  1. What is your current connection to Missouri State University? Student (how so, what class)? Staff (where, if you don't mind)? Alumni (graduating class)?

  2. Why are you interested in becoming a moderator for this particular community forum? What motivates you to take on this role?

  3. What is your availability and commitment level for serving as a moderator? How much time per week can you dedicate to monitoring the forum and responding to issues?

  4. Are you familiar with and willing to enforce the forum's code of conduct and community guidelines? How would you educate members on the rules and expectations?

  5. How would you approach maintaining a positive, constructive, and inclusive tone in the forum? What strategies would you use to address disruptive or toxic behavior?

  6. What ideas do you have for engaging the community, encouraging participation, and fostering a sense of belonging among forum members?

There's no set timeframe on this, and I'll try to keep this pinned until we feel like we have a good starting team.

Eventually, what I would like to see is for a new group to takeover essential responsibilities over time and even for them to promote a "hand-off" for responsibilities in the long-term future for new and more engaged students/staff/alumni as mods may naturally become less engaged upon graduating, retiring, or other life events.

Toured, liked it, questions on major

Hello. We toured the Missouri State campus and loved it, but we have some questions we didn’t really think of at the time:

  1. What can you say about the quality of the Business program? (I haven’t found much for rankings online, but those don’t always tell the story anyway)?

  2. What kind of town is Springfield? Safe? Clean? Fun? Big enough/too big?

Thanks for any insight from folks in the know!

Do web-based/distance learning students get a physical BearPass ID?

I contacted the BearPass office about this and they told me I should contact my academic department. I contacted my academic department and they told me this was the BearPass office's responsibility.

What was the process like for other distance-learning students here?

I know it's not really *necessary* since I'm not an on campus student, but it would be nice to have the card handy for anything going on in my own local area or while traveling that requires a student ID (museum admissions, etc.) as well as field-relevant periodical/journal subscriptions that offer a discounted student rate.

I am planning to join this university this fall. I am skeptical and not being able to make a decision. Is it worth joining the university as international student?

Are the restaurants only for students?

There's like a really good assortment of restaurants on campus. Just wondering if only students are served or if they are open to the public. I know anyone can go in there, do they need a student ID or some sort of specific card to purchase there? I could see that going either way hah. Thanks in advance.
