Statement from the Shadow Foreign Secretary on the Lord Chancellor's Resignation

Statement from The Most Hon. The Marquess of Belfast CT LVO PC FRS MLA, Labour Party Press Officer and Shadow Foreign Secretary:

Firstly, I would like to pay tribute to my good friend, the Right Honourable Lord Grantham, the former Lord Chancellor and Attorney General. His intelligence, wit, and dedication to the legal profession and upholding the laws of the United Kingdom are truly second to none, and though we may not always agree, I have never had a reason to doubt his sound judgement and professionalism. The Prime Minister made a grave mistake in rejecting his legal advice, and it is not right that he should have been forced to resign over a matter of international law.

The ICJ's ruling on Chagos is not difficult to understand - "the United Kingdom is under an obligation to bring to an end its administration of the Chagos Archipelago as rapidly as possible”. In choosing to ignore this judgement, the Government undermines the very fundamentals of international law and the long-standing order that governs interactions between countries. This is a dangerous direction to turn, and it is astonishing to me that the Leader of the House of Lords should have so little respect for the chamber in which he uttered such nonsense and for the people of the United Kingdom that he serves. We cannot pick and choose when to follow the rulings of the ICJ, again, doing so undermines the very fundamentals of international law.

International law may not be thought of as law in the same way as common law or the legislation that we produce every day in Parliament, but if this government begins to ignore specific judgements in the International Court of Justice just because they think that the ICJ is wrong, then very soon the rich tapestry of international treaties and policies that we as a nation have crafted over centuries will be meaningless to both ourselves and our supposed allies - if we do not respect the international laws that we have written and signed with our neighbours, our neighbours will not respect us in return. The alliances we forged to help bolster ourselves, our allies and the world will be weakened by mistrust and dissolve through inaction - weakening our diplomatic power and damaging our reputation worldwide. This refusal to move with the times and accept that the Chagos islands are not British territory, but rather that of Mauritius, will only harm our presence on the world stage and act as a hovering asterisk over every single international treaty and partnership that we attempt to sign, a black mark on our record as a truly fair country on the world stage.

I truly believe that the wrong person was forced to resign today - if I had to pick between an Attorney General offering sound advice and a Leader of the House of Lords running his mouth and making thoughtless comments, I know who I would choose. On behalf of the Opposition, I call on the Prime Minister to make this right and fire the Leader of the House of Lords before he can embarrass this Government and the United Kingdom any further, and to apologise for his conduct in the House of Lords.

Appointment of Shadow Secretaries of State - 6 September 2020

Dame lily-irl, the Leader of the Opposition, delivered a short statement on the steps of Millbank Tower early this morning.

Good morning,

Recent events have necessitated the replacement of numerous members of the Shadow Cabinet. These are difficult times for the Labour Party. As the largest party on the left-wing, we have a responsibility to hold this right-wing government to account. We cannot abandon that responsibility due to any partisan divides on the left. We are charged with putting forward the best case we can for the British left, and I am charged with leading the strongest possible opposition to do that.

I am optimistic. The days of division and chaos are now behind us. With these appointments, I have assembled a team who I am completely confident have the passion, the skills, and the dedication needed to oppose this Government with every ounce of vigour in our bodies.

Labour has faced challenges before. We have risen to those challenges, time after time. We shall do so again. And I look forward to seeing a Labour Prime Minister occupy 10 Downing Street after the next General Election. But to do that, we need a strong, focused policy platform. I will be speaking more on that in the coming days. But first, I give you, the newest additions to Her Majesty's Most Loyal Opposition.

Shadow Secretary of State for Defence

Rt Hon. sunlightatnight MP

A veteran of the Labour Party, I am very pleased to see sunlightatnight make a return to the frontlines of British politics as the Shadow Defence Secretary. In the conversations I have had with him, he has shown himself to be eager to take the portfolio and anxious to get to work with our policy experts to take the lead on presenting a strong and sensible defence vision for Britain.

Shadow Secretary of State for Justice

Hon. Archism_ MS

I am incredibly pleased to welcome Archism_ back to the Shadow Cabinet. An incredibly passionate individual, he is renowned for his service to Wales, and with the upcoming referendum on Justice devolution, I can think of no better person to fill this role. I am also pleased to see him take on the role of Director of Communications for the Official Opposition. I've seen some of the branding he's put together, and it looks absolutely superb.

Shadow Secretary of State for Transport

Rt Hon. Anacornda, The Lord Fishguard MS

I was disappointed when Anacornda resigned as the Shadow Transport Secretary, but I understood that their health had to come first. But I am overjoyed to see them return to the role that they held, while briefly, but to great success. A dynamic individual who is a source of good ideas, they are a valuable addition to the Shadow Cabinet.

Shadow Secretary of State for Health

Rt Hon. apth10 MP

apth10, in addition to being the Commons Chief Whip, takes on the Health portfolio, shadowing the position he held for most of the Sunrise Coalition. A man who is experienced in Health and Social Care policy, I can think of no one better to take this position than them. Congratulations on the additional portfolio, apth, and I speak for the entire Opposition when I say we can't wait to see what you get up to!

Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland

Rt Hon. Youmaton, the Baroness of Motherwell MSP

Filling the role of Shadow Scotland Secretary is the longtime leader of Scottish Labour, Youmaton. She has been a fighter for Scotland, leading Scottish Labour to new highs in the polls, and under her leadership Labour has grown from minor fifth party to the largest Opposition party in the Scottish Parliament. A champion of all Scots, I know she will fill this role well.

Shadow Leader of the House of Lords

Rt Hon. NukeMaus, the Earl of No Place

As the Shadow Leader of the House of Lords and the Shadow Lords Whip, former leader NukeMaus will be at the forefront of our delegation to the House of Lords, continuing to employ his wealth of political experience to advocate for Labour's policies and the working people of Britain. He has been a key figure in guiding leaders from myself to ARichTeaBiscuit and Secretary_Salami, and I am pleased to see him take on these roles.

Thank you all for coming. These are your new Shadow Ministers in Her Majesty's Most Loyal Opposition. We look forward to serving you, the people of Britain, both inside of Parliament and out. Thank you.

Inquiries should be directed to the office of the Leader of the Opposition.

Appointment of a Shadow Secretary of State for Education

31 August 2020 - For Immediate Release

On the morning of Saturday 29 August, CDocwra informed me of his intention to resign both as the Shadow Secretary of State for Education and his membership of the Labour Party. As a colleague throughout the most recent LibLab opposition and the Sunrise Coalition, CDocwra has been a dedicated figure and I sincerely thank him for his service. I wish him well in his future endeavours, wherever his interests may take him.

As his replacement in the Shadow Cabinet, I am very pleased to announce that Frost_Walker2017 will be taking the Education portfolio, in addition to his current role as the Shadow Culture, Communities, Media, and Sport Secretary. Frosty is someone who has consistently impressed me with his passion, dedication, and eagerness to work for a better Britain, and I have no doubts he is the absolute best person for the job.

Both I and the Official Opposition look forward to continuing to serve the British public and provide a strong and principled opposition to this government.

Appointment of a Shadow Secretary of State for Transport

26 August 2020 - For Immediate Release

Earlier today, /u/Anacornda, the Lord Fishguard, tendered to me their resignation as the Shadow Secretary of State for Transport. They cited health issues rendering them unable to serve on the frontbench to the best of their abilities, but intends to continue to sit as a Labour peer in the House of Lords.

During their brief tenure, they were a constant positive presence in the Shadow Cabinet, and were dedicated to holding the government to account, being the first Shadow Secretary of State to release a public statement on the Government's conduct. They will be sorely missed from the Shadow Cabinet, and I wish them all the best in their recovery and look forward to continuing to work with them in the future.

However, I am delighted to announce their successor as the Shadow Secretary of State for Transport, the Right Honourable /u/AlvaroLage. During my time in the Labour Party, he has been a constant source of friendship and diligence. As the former deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland, he brings a wealth of experience to the table, and I am incredibly pleased to welcome him to the frontbench.

Inquiries should be directed to the office of the Leader of the Opposition.

Statement from the Shadow Secretary for Transport on Transport Secretary Claims.

Good morning everyone,

Earlier today an article written by my friend Captainographer landed on my desk regarding a claim by the Secretary of Transport, the person I shadow. In the article, quotes from the Secretary include; “We could convert a channel island into a detention centre.” and “...what’s the issue with that though? Australia does similar.” These quotes are in reference to migrants crossing the English channel into the United Kingdom.

Comments from a government secretary like this are simply unacceptable. If we look at the Australian system the secretary talks about, you can see human rights violations in these systems. A key one that it violates is “Everyone has the right not to be subjected to arbitrary detention.” The violation of this right comes in with the Australian Government willingly holding people in the centres for extreme lengths of time. This is unacceptable, but that is not what I am here to talk about.

The human right I mentioned comes from Article 9 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. (ICCPR) The United Kingdom is a signatory of this treaty. If a government Secretary is willingly able to try and bring something that violates a human right to the United Kingdom, they cannot serve the country faithfully.

Another Human Right the Australian Detention Centres violate is “Anyone who is deprived of his liberty by arrest or detention shall be entitled to take proceedings before a court…” This means that anyone who is held in detention can take their case to court. However according to a report by the Australian Human Rights Commission, this is not the case.

This right is also in the ICCPR. If, as the secretary suggests, we introduce immigrant detention to the United Kingdom to the same level as Australia, we would see this violation come into place also.

Spokespersons from the government have said that the government would never even consider introducing this to the United Kingdom, but that doesn’t stop the Secretary from making this horrible statement. To think that a Government Secretary would say this disgusts me.

The remarks by the Secretary of Transport are simply disgusting and they should not be allowed to continue to serve. I am calling for their immediate resignation, or removal from Cabinet. We cannot let them continue to serve our country in their position.

Thank you for coming today and any questions or inquiries can be sent directly to my office.

Statement from Shadow Foreign Secretary on Belarus

ARichTeaBiscuit gave a short statement to the press concerning the ongoing protests taking place across Belarus.

“Hello there,

On the 9th of August, the people of Belarus went to their local polling station and took part in the democratic process, unfortunately, the process that they took part in was neither free nor fair and the desire for people to see political change in their country was promptly ignored.

It has been inspiring to see the people of Belarus take to the streets to demand that their democratic expression is respected, however, the heavy-handed use of force being utilised against these protesters and members of the press by members of the Belarusian security services is simply unacceptable.

I welcome the move of the European Council to support the introduction of targeted sanctions against Belarusian officials involved in carrying out this anti-democratic crackdown alongside measures to give financial support to independent press organisations and victims of oppression in Belarus.

It is time for the United Kingdom to work together with our friends in the European Union to introduce sanctions against Belarusian officials and also give financial support to civil society groups and victims of oppression in Belarus.

I am hopeful that moving forward the OSCE can facilitate peaceful dialogue between the Belarusian government and the opposition on a peaceful resolution to this democratic crisis, however, in the meantime, I expect to see further information from the Foreign Secretary on the introduction of these sanctions and the possibility of sending financial aid to civil society groups operating in Belarus.

I stand with the people of Belarus during this troubling time, and I hope that we can all work together to find the best path forward for the Belarusian people, thank you.”

Announcement of the Shadow Cabinet of the 29th Official Opposition

Friends, comrades, Britons:

It is a distinct honour and a pleasure to have been elected as the leader of the Labour Party, and to serve as the Leader of Her Majesty's Most Loyal Opposition. I am excited to vigorously hold this Government to account, and I am also excited to work with my coalition partners, the Democratic Reformist Front. Their leader, Gregor_The_Beggar, has been nothing short of an absolute pleasure to work with, and he and I share a desire to fight tirelessly for Britons throughout this Parliamentary term.

Without further ado, it is my honour to introduce the Shadow Cabinet. These dynamic and hardworking individuals have my absolute confidence in their abilities to work hard to hold the Government to account and present a positive vision for a better Britain.

The Leader of the Opposition

The Rt Hon. Dame lily-irl LG GBE CB MVO PC MP

I, of course, will be serving as the Leader of the 29th Official Opposition. While I hold this role, I will be a tireless champion of the vision that Labour and the DRF share for a better Britain. I would like to thank my predecessor in this position, Lady ARichTeaBiscuit, for their service to the Labour Party and the people of Britain. Their leadership started with the party in chaos, with the sudden departure of a near universally-hated leader, one who we shall speak of no longer. Nevertheless, they managed to steady the ship and lead Labour to the top of opinion polls for the first time in the last term, and I know that they still have a lot left to offer to British politics.

The Deputy Leader of the Opposition

The Rt Hon. Gregor_The_Beggar MP

Gregor is a man of dedication. The second leader of the Democratic Reformist Front, he has overseen the DRF as its devolved branches, Plaid Cymru, the Irish Parliamentary Party, and the Scottish Progressives continued to have a strong impact on devolved politics. He has overseen a period of stability for the DRF in Westminster as well, and I am incredibly excited to have him on my team and work closely with him over the next six months and beyond.

Shadow First Secretary of State

The Rt Hon. Captainographer PC MP

Captainographer has been an incredible asset to the Labour Party, both as its Press Officer and now as its Chair. A continued presence in the party executive, offering advice and leading the Press Office to new heights of output, she has proven herself worthy time and again of her roles, and I am proud to call her not only a colleague but a friend.

Shadow Minister for the Cabinet Office

The Rt Hon. The Earl of No Place GBE CT CB PC QC

NukeMaus, the Earl of No Place, has had a long and accomplished career in British politics. He has served as the Leader of the Labour Party and has served in numerous cabinets and shadow cabinets since. He has never tired in his advocacy of a better Britain, and his advice has been invaluable to the Party on numerous occasions. I am proud to welcome such a dedicated and accomplished figure to the Shadow Cabinet.

Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer

The Hon. NGSpy MBE MP

NGSpy has not been a presence for very long in British politics, but his rapid rise in the Labour Party is testament to his economic knowledge and the unique skillset that he brings to the table. He is both considered as well as visionary, possessing both the imagination to come up with dynamic policies as well as the expertise required to put those into action. I am pleased to see him return as the Shadow Chancellor, and I know that his entry into 11 Downing Street is coming soon.

Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury

The Hon. Imadearedditaccount5 MP MSP MLA MS

The leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party as well as the former leader of the Scottish Democratic Reformist Front, Sammy knows the meaning of hard work. Working with the Northern Ireland Executive as well as serving his constituents in Holyrood and the Senedd is no easy job, but he does it and does it well. I am pleased to welcome him to the shadow Treasury team.

Shadow Secretary of State for the Home Department

The Hon. Stalin1953 MP

Stalin1953 is a man of many words. He always has something to say, because he knows that no issue, great or small, is unimportant to his constituents. He is not only an accomplished policymaker but a renowned orator and has both the passion and drive needed to perform well in his role. I wish him the best of luck, but I'm certain he doesn't need it.

Shadow Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs

The Rt Hon. Dame ARichTeaBiscuit LD DCB DBE PC MP

ARichTeaBiscuit is no stranger to frontline Westminster politics, having lead the opposition throughout the last term. But before they were the Leader of the Opposition, their true passion lay in foreign affairs. A knowledgeable and competent politician, I know they will continue to impress as the Shadow Foreign Secretary.

Shadow Minister of State for Oceania

Shadow Minister of State for Security

The Hon. Gregor_The_Beggar MP
and the other picture

I've already said why I know Gregor to be a competent and worthy member of the Shadow Cabinet, but I'm also excited to see him serve as a Shadow Minister of State in both of these portfolios. Gregor is extremely knowledgeable in foreign affairs with regards to Oceania, and will also serve as the Shadow Minister of State for Security. I am excited to see what he will do in both of these posts.

Shadow Secretary of State for International Trade

The Rt Hon. Captainographer PC MP

Captainographer knows the ins and outs of International Trade. She served in this position with distinction in the last Shadow Cabinet, and her performance leaves no doubt whatsoever in my mind that she is the right person for the job.

Shadow Secretary of State for Defence

The Rt Hon. motelblinds CT PC MP

motelblinds is a relatively old face in British politics and a relatively new one in the Labour Party. But in the short time I've gotten to spend with him, I have been continuously impressed by not only his work ethic but also his technical know-how. A more than competent policymaker in Defence, he brings theoretical as well as practical experience into the role, and I have no doubt he will shine amongst the members of this Shadow Cabinet.

Shadow Minister of State for Veterans' Affairs

The Hon. GhandiWoreCrocs MP

Another newer face in the Labour Party, he is eager to get started as an MP and a shadow minister. His real-world experience with Defence makes him a logical choice to serve in this shadow ministry, and I know that he will work well with the Shadow Secretary of State for Defence and the rest of the Shadow Cabinet in upholding Labour's commitments to our veterans.

Shadow Secretary of State for Health and Social Care

The Rt Hon. Sir wiredcookie1 KT PC MP MSP

Jimmy is a man who is renowned not only throughout Scotland but the entire United Kingdom as a constant champion of the working class and every citizens' right to healthcare. A man who is passionate, dedicated, and experienced in healthcare, he is the obvious choice to serve as the Shadow Health Secretary. I am excited to see what he will do in this role.

Shadow Secretary of State for Education

The Rt Hon. CDocwra MP

CDocwra has had a long career in British politics. Someone with experience in just about everything, I have no doubt that he will serve the public well as the Shadow Education Secretary.

Shadow Minister of State for Equalities

The Hon. Captain_Plat_2258 MP MSP

Kate is someone who simply will not stand for injustice anywhere. A campaigner for the rights of ethnic minorities, transgender and intersex individuals, and marginalised communities everywhere, she is incredibly passionate about this Shadow Ministry, and I do not envy any Government minister who she will be shadowing.

Shadow Secretary of State for Justice

The Rt Hon. motelblinds CT PC MP

One of the most impressive things I've found about motelblinds is not only his depth of knowledge but the wide range of experience he possesses. He does not have just surface level knowledge of the ministries he will be shadowing, he has real, in depth experience in both of these fields. No one else could compare to his level of experience in this role, and I am very pleased to see him fill it.

Shadow Secretary of State for Environment and Climate Change

The Hon. Captain_Plat_2258 MP MSP

When writing the last Labour manifesto, I didn't expect Kate to contribute much. She had expressed an interest in working on environmental policy, but at the time she was on leave after recovering from surgery. Nevertheless, she turned up one day with page after page of environmental policy. This reflects the work ethic she carries with her, day in and day out. She is absolutely the right person for this job and I welcome her wholeheartedly to the team.

Shadow Secretary of State for Housing, Local Government, and Regional Growth

The Hon. Imadearedditaccount5 MP MSP MLA MS

Sammy is familiar with a more focused level of government, with his experience in the devolved legislatures. But beyond that, he is both a passionate campaigner and a fast learner, and I know he will get down to work very quickly in this role. I am excited to see what he'll do next.

Shadow Secretary of State for Democracy

The Hon. Gregor_The_Beggar MP

I've already shared Gregor's numerous positive qualities and talents, but Democracy and democratic reform is his bread and butter. The main focus of his party, the Democratic Reformist Front, I know that he's dedicated to filling this role and filling it well.

Shadow Secretary of State for Transport

The Lord Fishguard MLA MS

Anacornda will be returning to the Shadow Cabinet as the Shadow Secretary of State for Transport. They will continue to vigorously oppose attempts at further rail privatisation, and will work with the Shadow Secretary of State for Housing, Local Government, and Rural Affairs to ensure that public transport is available and affordable for every Briton. None can be left behind in transport networks.

Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Digital, Energy and Industry

The Hon. Copelonian MP MSP

A fixture of recent shadow cabinets and an involved member of the Scottish Labour Party, Copelonian keeps a low profile but keeps his head down and gets to work. His work ethic is what makes him stand out in private, and he's always engaged in internal party discussions. I am excited to see him get to work in his new role.

Shadow Secretary of State for Employment, Pensions and Welfare

The Hon. vincendt MP

Another newer addition to the Labour team, vincendt made himself known throughout the General Election campaign as a ready and able campaigner, and I'm proud to introduce him to his first frontbench role. He is eager to learn and I have no doubts he will continue to climb in the party and get to work for the people of Britain.

Shadow Secretary of State for International Development

Shadowing the Minister of State for UKAid

The Lady Kilmarnock MSP MLA MS

There is simply no avoiding NeatSaucer. Everywhere from the devolved parliaments to Westminster, she makes herself known through her passionate advocacy for working Britons and her contributions to party policy. I am pleased to welcome her back to the frontbench, and we'll all be watching her as she settles back in and gets to work for Britain.

Shadow Secretary of State for Communities, Culture, Media and Sport

The Hon. Frost_Walker2017 MP

Frosty is always a pleasure to work with. He has, beyond a doubt, one of the brightest new additions to Labour in recent months. A passionate and competent member, I am excited to have him bring his energy and dedication to the shadow cabinet.

Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland

The Rt Hon. Sir IceCreamSandwich401 KT KP KBE CT PC MP

The former First Minister of Scotland obviously has a wealth of experience regarding Scotland. He's always a pleasure to work with and his experience in the Scottish government is second to none. He was the logical choice for this role and I am very pleased to welcome him to the Shadow Cabinet.

Shadow Secretary of State for Wales

The Hon. Gregor_The_Beggar MP

A longtime member of Plaid Cymru, Gregor knows Wales and the unique challenges that it faces today. I am excited to see him serve as the Shadow Wales Secretary.

Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland

The Hon. Imadearedditaccount5 MP MSP MLA MS

As the leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party and a sitting MLA, Sammy was an easy pick for Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary. He will do a splendid job in holding the Northern Ireland Secretary to account and I look forward to working with him in this and his many other roles.

Shadow Leader of the House of Commons

The Rt Hon. Sir redwolf177 KBE PC MP

Returning in his role has the Shadow Leader of the House of Commons is redwolf177, a man who continues to impress me each and every day. Someone with a long career in politics, from First Minister of Wales to Sunrise cabinet minister, he is one of the most experienced members of the Shadow Cabinet and I am grateful he has agreed to serve once more.

Shadow Chief Whip

The Rt Hon. The Lord Carrington PC MLA

The Chief Whip of the Labour Party, apth has been a pleasure to work with in Labour and in prior shadow cabinets. Someone who keeps our voting attendance at consistently high levels and runs a well-ordered Whip Office, he is the right choice for this role.

Shadow Leader of the House of Lords and Lords Chief Whip

The Rt Hon. The Marquess of Fife and the Forth Valley KT CT MVO PC MSP

Alajv has had a long career in British and Scottish politics, and I thank him for agreeing to serve as the head of the Official Opposition in the House of Lords. His experience will continue to be of great utility to newer Lords and the Official Opposition as a whole.

This concludes the announcement of the Shadow Cabinet. I have an absolutely fantastic team behind me, and I cannot wait to see what we will accomplish throughout this term. Thank you.

Statement from the Shadow Foreign Secretary on the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States of America

Statement from the Shadow Foreign Secretary on the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States of America:

Her Majesty’s most loyal opposition views the recent negative developments in Iranian-American relations as fundamentally counterproductive to the United Kingdom’s desires for both regional and global peace and stability. An aggressive, unpredictable, and tension-packed atmosphere between two powers threatens the regional balance and the safety of the United Kingdom, her citizens, and her allies. In recognition of this fact, Her Majesty’s Most Loyal Opposition respectfully calls on all parties to show restraint and come together for a peaceful solution, rather than escalating and resorting to solving their differences through violence and intimidation. The Opposition also urges Her Majesty’s Government to use every available method at its disposal in order to facilitate and actively encourage these two nations to de-escalate and negotiate. Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition is of the firm belief that, as a Great Power, the United Kingdom can and should play a beneficial role in resolving disputes and bringing about peace on the world stage. Furthermore, as previously stated, we view any conflict between these two great powers as a threat to the safety of the United Kingdom and her citizens and therefore view its peaceful resolution as being the duty of the United Kingdom’s Government. We urge the Government in the strongest possible terms to join us in our calls for calm and de-escalation and hope they will use the formidable power of their office to the best of their ability in seeking a peaceful resolution between these two countries, and the opposition stands willing and ready to assist the government in all reasonable and sensible endeavours in pursuit of peace.
