Hi, friends. The issue has been raised. Here's the situation.
The original founders of r/MemeThatNews abandoned this place a long time ago. I don't think that is a surprise to anyone. The subreddit is flooded with bot reposts in incredibly high amounts and these posts are both years old and unsourced, violating the very purpose of this community. On top of that, there are next to no persistent genuine meme creators.
I'm taking executive action with the executive privileges I don't have and am gonna clamp down on here a little harder. The other moderator here that is still active is u/Trexie19. Hey, homie! Of the ten moderator accounts, we are the two that come up as active when I go to mod data on the subreddit. Neat. I can't do anything to the accounts above me on the list without invoking RedditRequest and if they're still lurking around, they can happily take things back. But I'm gonna purge the inactive accounts below me. If they're still around and want to let me know, they can. This will clean things up a bit and effectively raise Trexie deservedly up the list while leaving space for any new mods we might bring on board down the line. I'll also ensure that Trexie continues to have full moderator perms so he (I think I remember you being a he?) can help me manage future moderators.
I've inserted a bit of AutoMod code from the subreddit r/DankPrecolumbianMemes I run that prevents repost bots by limiting posts to accounts with at least 50 comment karma and at least eight days of account age. This should basically kill the repost bots across the board since they never comment and are often very new accounts. It's also an easy threshold to get over that should be quick for users who actively comment and hang out for a while.
Enforcement of posts being sourced to articles within the last three months will continue and once we get more mods hopefully increase. But please, if you want the sub to take off again, make some content. Whatever renovation happens in the future, we run by old rules for now.
