Please help identify this Edward III. I can't tell from Spink's book. Can you read the legend on the obverse (left side of the pic) and the reverse (right side), or what it should say? Diameter is 18mm. Thank you

If you're interested in the fascinating history of Scottish coinage, the latest talk in the Money & Medals Network's Coin Talk series, Carl Savage’s Introduction to the Medieval Coins of Scotland, is now available on YouTube!

In this talk, Carl delves into the origins of Scottish coinage, beginning in 1136, when David I of Scotland took control of Carlisle and started minting coins. The talk covers the development of Scottish coinage from David I to Robert II (1136–1390), offering a captivating overview of this formative period.

Coin Talk is a regular online event hosted by the Money & Medals Network, designed to explore numismatics from beginner-friendly topics to advanced discussions. Anyone good with Polish coins of Wladislaw II Jagellio?

Hello all

I could use some guidance from anyone who is handy with the issues of Wladyslaw II Jagiello, specifically pre-1410.

Pointers/IDs would be good, and suggestions for PDFs, websites, or books welcomed. I came across the names "Kubiak" and "Kopicki" as experts, but haven't been able to pin down their works so far.

I'm specifically looking for coin issues that are as close to the date of the Battle of Grunwald (July 15, 1410) as possible without having been issued later than that date.

Cheers!

Edit: yes, I know I misspelled it in the subject line 😅

Hate for eBay and MA-Shops?

Hey all

I've come across a general dislike for eBay and MA-Shops a few times, and I find it a little confusing.

Yes, of course the prices can be high... But that can be said of anywhere, depending on the item.

I've come across incredible deals on eBay. There was an outstandingly nice slabbed Black Prince demi gros on there for months at just $400. Sadly, it was gone before I had the $400 to spare... It still hurts LOL. It would have still been worth it at over $100 more.

That's just one example that was particularly memorable.

It's similar with MA-Shops. I've seen/scored some great deals there. My first purchase there was a Black Prince obol... A type of coin that almost never comes on the market anywhere in any condition at any price. It was $200. No regrets.

That, too, is just one example.

Part of what I like about both is that you can find really unusual, off-the-beaten path coins that you might be surprised to find or didn't even know about, opening up new areas of collecting. I didn't expect to start collecting coins issued by patrons of medieval fencing masters, but the Duke Ludwig IX "The Rich" of Bavaria pfennig I have on the way says otherwise... And I got the best price for an attractive example in nice silver on eBay.

Has anyone else had positive experiences like these in those marketplaces, or is it just me? What are your horror stories or brag-worthy wins?

Henry VIII Groat

How collectable is an Irish coin of Henry VIII minted in the Tower Mint compared to a Henry VIII Tudor coin from the same mint during the same time period? I've been collecting Ancient coins for a few years, but have almost no experience with Medieval coinage. Thought a decent Henry VIII Groat might be something I'd like to start with.

Were To Buy Elisabeth I Shilling

Hello. I have been collecting ancient coins for a while but want to branch into medieval coins. When buying ancients I mostly look to a few dealers and several auction houses I know are reliable, but most of these places don't sell many medieval coins if any. Were do you guys buy coins from? How rampant are fakes? Who are reliable dealers/ Auction Houses? Thanks for all help and sorry for the dumbass question but I'm brand new to medieval coins.

Introduction and question

Hello all

Just thought I'd say "hi" and tell you a little bit about my collecting.

I collect medieval coins almost exclusively. I started in the mid-1990s (anyone remember Worldwide Treasure Bureau?) but didn't do much collecting until the mid-2010s, and then more intensively starting around 2020.

My cutoff for dates is informally around 1500.

My main areas of collecting include:

Coins that have correlating examples found in the Battle of Wisby mass graves, but also including those of contemporary hoards around Gotland. This includes coins from allies and enemies around the time of the battle.

Coins of Edward the Black Prince and those of his allies and enemies, particularly during his acrimonious relationship with Pedro the Cruel and the subsequent quashing of a revolt in Limoges.

Coins of the family members of Vlad III Tepesh, aka Vlad the Impaler, aka Vlad Dracula; also to be included eventually will be allies and enemies during his lifetime.

Coins of the Teutonic order of knights and those of allies and enemies from the Battle of Grunwald.

Coins of other military orders, such as Hospitallers.

Coins associated with the Scottish Wars of Independence.

Coin issues from female rulers, such as Eleanor of Aquitaine.

Some areas of study overlap very directly, such as Teutonic Knights being involved in Wallachia during Vlad III's lifetime and also having their coins found in the Wisby mass graves.

By no means do I have a large collection nor the world's finest examples, but if anyone is curious about any of the areas I'm collecting in, feel free to ask and I'll tell you what I can and post pictures if I have related coins.

Now, to my question...

I'm interested in collecting coins, jetons, or tokens that include themes of death either in the legend or design. I haven't found much yet, but any books, links, pics, or where-to-find suggestions are most welcome!

Cheers!

From the coins community on Reddit: Is this particular NGC label still available? I can’t find it on their site guide.
