School project

My child is doing a school project where he has to create a suitcase of a character and fill it with items that the character would have used/needed in the book. He has chosen Thomas in the Maze Runner for this, but even working together, we can not come up with items for this, other than maybe the leather bag item carried on his shoulders (as seen in the movie).

Anyone have any suggestions?

Rank Every Book

Rank every Maze Runner book that you have read and finished. I’ll go first:

  1. Crank Palace-Barely any action and I didn’t have a good vision of anything.

  2. The Kill Order-A good book and I like how it connects to the main books at the end. There were just some boring parts that were too long.

  3. The Scorch Trials-Drastically different from the original but it was nice to see the outside world and it had a lot of good plot twists. It just started off slow.

  4. The Death Cure-I don’t like Denver but the beginning and the end are both great. This is perfect to end off the main trilogy.

  5. The Maze Runner-I love the mystery and the scariness of the maze. I just didn’t like how they revealed so much at the end and took away the mystery so quickly.

The Scorch Trials movie/book.

I had finally finished all three books and went to watch the movies.

I watched the first movie and while some things changed I was okay with it the most part.

I’m currently sitting here watching The Scorch Trials. Usually I’m not one to gripe too much about a movie being different from the book. But holy hell it’s not even close.

If this had been its own thing it would have been good in its own right as a zombie movie. But having the knowledge of the characters and the books. It’s a tough watch.

Oddly my biggest gripe is the telepathy that Thomas and Theresa have with each other. It seemed like such a core thing in the book that really drove Thomas’ decision making at times. It also showed what WICKED could do scientifically.

UPDATED (FINALLY): They said that because Solar Flares are Natural it would be could be possible. That being said if a mass Solar flares was to hit earth most likely to hit Earth, earth would only be "powered" off for20 days and technology wouldn't work but certainly a barren desert is unrealistic.

How much of Death Cure was planned?

In regards to Book 3, how much was planned to happen? Brenda says to trust her and Paige, and Brenda is the one to start Thomas' breakout. The switch to assist Thomas seems a little sudden but it's not impossible that Brenda would side with Thomas and Jorge follow her as she puts forward. The way she speaks later on she tries to pass on that they were just contractors or otherwise not as deep in the organization, but that seems to be a half-truth if not a lie. Sadly Thomas does shut her down before she's able to explain the entire thing in the coffee house in Denver (thanks Dashner), so I think it's pretty clear she wasn't as honest as she'd like to be.

Then during the actual breakout, they find the recently disturbed weapons racks leading to the conclusion they were recently all pulled out. Within a few days at the very least since there is dust everywhere but the empty racks. They find the whole room of tied-up guards, go out and find Jorge and escape in their Berg.

But the whole thing of walking into the room and finding a bunch of guards tied up is strange. Why would the main breakout of Gladers and Group B take the time to tie up a bunch of hostiles? Unless they thought they'd get up or otherwise stop them before they were able to fly off.
Then Thomas' breakout group happens to just find Jorge seemingly KO'd by Teresa from what he says. So this all points to the idea that the larger breakout just escaped before Thomas and his group got to the hangar. It couldn't be more than an hour at most it seems. Also supported by what Janson says, that he needs to address something else, and what the female guard they take hostage for a few moments says, that there was something else that called most of the guards to a different sector.

Then later on, when meeting back with Teresa, she says they had been told Thomas already escaped and they were hiding away in the woods. So, either she's lying to get Thomas' trust again or was lied to by WICKED or some faction within WICKED. Her sudden switchover was also strange, being a die-hard WICKED member for everything before that moment she broke out. Her childhood indoctrination was suddenly washed away and she went turn-coat? Granted we don't know totally what happened after she goes into the operation room for the Swipe and implant removals. It's unsure but I do lean on the side she never actually got the swipe to start with, or she only got a partial memory wipe. She could have finally seen that WICKED was not going to stop anytime soon and changed, or similarly ended support after getting her memories. But she could have also been tasked with this by Paige. So the entire timeline for the breakouts is strange, was Teresa's breakout somehow planned, even without her knowing to give coverage to Thomas' breakout? Was it planned by Ava personally to allow Thomas and as many Immunes as possible to get out? Did Brenda get picked by Ava to assist Thomas' escape because of their connection in the Scorch?

Then when they get to Denver, somehow Jorge is able to produce fake IDs from seemingly nowhere? He was flying or sleeping until they got to Denver, or at least should have been. It's never explained if these are paper and digital IDs. I suppose if they were digital he might be able to spoof them as he does with their WICKED transmitter on the Berg. But even that would take a while I feel for them all to get new identities.

I think that the breakouts and getting Thomas to Denver were in some way scripted. Planned to get Teresa's group to escape, and for Thomas' to go at a similar time. Finding Jorge and him having the stuff needed to leave, and get into Denver. After getting to Denver, I'm not sure. It could have been planned or assumed that putting Teresa, Thomas and the rest in Denver would get Gally's attention and then the Right Arm's - spurring an attack on the WICKED HQ up north. Maybe Paige planned for the Immunes to escape, make Janson start collecting more Immunes, then put Thomas and the others in Denver where they could link with Right Arm and agree to attack the HQ. I think Paige might have wanted the Immunes to get out of WICKED some way, but this way of destroying the HQ and Mazes, and killing or otherwise removing A.D. Janson from power also helped her. She was able to remove a political opponent and save the Immunes still remaining.

I hope this brings some discussion. This started because me and a friend are re-reading the trilogy together and I have some distrust for Brenda and Paige, and he didn't. So I wanted to hear some other ideas about what I thought. Thanks!

Somewere in The Scorch Trials (the movie, i didn't read the book yet) you see a crank with no eyes, later in the movie Theresa tells about her mom taking her own eyes out, could that crank be her mother?

I tried reading it the past couple of days, and it is just sooooo boring compared to the main 3 and crank palace. is there a mindset i could put myself in, or maybe even non "life-threatening" spoilers so I wanna know what happens so I read the book?

could someone give me a breakdown of all the major plots in the maze cutter?

I read the maze cutter a while back and I honestly hated it. I could give a full essay on why I hated it but you’re not really here for that lol. I want to read the godhead complex just so I have all the tmr books read and all the lore and stuff organised in my head, but I cannot be bothered to reread this twisted tale of utter rubbish to be honest. I find the book really hard to follow through (especially alexandra’s monologues, it’s like you have to analyse them to understand) and I’d really rather not go through the struggle of it again.

I’ve looked everywhere for a summary and I can’t find any that’s not like ‘the descendants of the gladers are coerced into going on an adventure full of thrill and mystery, meeting mutated, intelligent cranks along the way’ or something. it’d be really appreciated if anyone could give me a semi-detailed summary - I know it’s quite a lot to ask for, but I’m really struggling to read this book again.

Are the books better than the movie?

I’m pretty sure the obvious answer to this is yes, but I rewatched the series recently and I’m a little confused and was wondering if the books clear up some things or are just overall more enjoyable.

The chemistry between Teresa and Thomas is kind of non-existent, since we never actually see them talk. So every time they share each others company it just never seem deserved. This goes the same for a lot of the side characters who die and the film forces viewers to think it’s a huge deal when I don’t even remember said characters name. (Like Winston, who had hardly any screen time)

I was also pretty confused on the actual point of the maze, I understand it was to test their reaction to extreme environments but why a maze? Wouldn’t it be better to test them in an environment similar to the harsh ones people are experiencing outside of the maze?

When they gave the cure to Alby and Thomas in the Glade, they both got better. But when Thomas gave his blood to Brenda they said it would only last her a month. I get why Thomas may have been better, since he is immune, but then why did he need the antidote in the first place?

Also why did Brenda kiss Thomas only to then say she reminded him of her brother a few hours later. 💀

Basically the story is super cool but I just wanted to know if it was worth it buying and reading the books and if they did a better job at explaining/presenting these plot points than the movie did.

The Godhead Complex read-through - Part One: Natural Selection

I'm actually halfway through Part Two, but I'll try to comment only on Part One so I save comments on Part Two for the next post.

The Cure and Variants

First off, the answers to my doubt from my first post was quickly answered: the Cure and the Variants cone from Newtsm's blood and the Variants are variations of Newt's DNA.

The doubt about how they found out Newt was special stands. But in the beginning I thought it wasn't going to be explained, but now it looks like it will, because in Part Two there's a scene of Sadina asking Frypan precisely this. But enough of anticipating Part Two.

Highlighted Quotes

Here are a couple quotes I highlighted:

After Sadina and Isaac were kidnapped, Isaac couldn't help but notice Trish tethered herself more than ever to Sadina, in whatever ways she could. Isaac understood that too. He was thankful for the group, but he himself felt untethered, as if a bad wind could come along and just blow everything away.

Just thought this was a nice insight into Isaac’s mind.

The wind kicked up and the sparks of the fire reminded him of the sparks in the forge. He'd give anything to go back to being a blacksmith apprentice at home,

Again nice insight, but also I like the building of the image of the scene. Like I can imagine Isaac looking intently into the fire lost in thought.

Frypan's POV

For this post's open question, I'd like to bring the following: would you like Frypan to be one of the character's that has a POV? That way we could have more insight into him, too, and memories about/with the OG characters.

Ben getting banished in the book

Okay so I’m reading TMR books and I’m on the first one and obviously Ben was stung and was going through the changing? But I don’t understand if they gave him the serum and why they didn’t wait it out because if he had got the serum he would’ve gotten better.? He attacked Thomas which is horrible in the glade but why did he get banished if he could’ve got better after the changing and receiving the serum, hopefully this makes sense thanks!!

The Godhead Complex read-through

[Spoilers for The Godhead Complex and The Maze Cutter]

I just began reading The Godhead Complex and I'll try to keep on making posts as I go to share my thoughts on it and open some discussions about topics I find interesting along the way.

Please do not spoil anything for me.

I just read the Prologue and these are the topics I have on my mind:

The Cure and Variants

It's stated in the end of The Maze Cutter that Newt was the Cure. I'm intrigued and looking forward to knowing how did they find out that that particular Crank was special to go and investigate to discover he was the Cure, given that he was not immune, so he should be just one more Crank cadaver when he was found.

Also as for the Variants, I'm hoping the book will talk more about how that came to be exactly. Whether it was intentional or by accident, etc.

The Book of Newt

Now this is a question I have for everyone: the Book of Newt is quoted all throughout The Maze Cutter and, it seems, also throughout The Godhead Complex. Would you like Dashner to actually put out the whole thing?

I know this is not realistically happening. But let's say the Book of Newt was to be released more or less like The Maze Runner Files: a short companion book. Do you think it'd be nice to have more insight into Newt's last moments? Do you think it'd be more of the same in relation to Crank Palace? Do you think the odds are Dashner would not do a good job at it, given the inconsistencies of Crank Palace? Or do you think it would be a good idea?
