I'll always be grateful to Jesse for introducing me to the sleekest way to get to a specific subreddit when typing its name. For years, he's directed listeners to maximumfun.reddit.com I even let other podcasters know that this is the best way to tell someone the URL, then they've adopted it as well!
Alas, something seems to be different and this trick doesn't work for me now. It doesn't bring me to any specific subreddit; it just takes me to reddit.com :( Is it just me? I'm an inveterate user of "old" reddit (more on this below), so I never know if it's just us weirdos being left behind. But - try as I might - I can't get this URL format trick to work in any context new.
If this URL format is dead, maybe Jesse should stop saying it? I never thought it would come to this...
A tangent on "old" reddit and URLs that work: I've always thought it was amusing that not only does old.reddit.com work, but so does od.reddit.com , ol.reddit.com , and even ld.reddit.com - for anyone who's really into the whole brevity thing.
A few things:
Mark Oppenheimer was mentioned early in this pod. Mark used to co-host a podcast called Unorthodox, which referred to its listeners as the J-Crew. Perhaps a cousin of the J-Squad?
The Swedish word for raccoon is tvättbjörn, which literally means "wash-bear."
I was always told that you were supposed to store wool clothing in a cedar chest or with cedar blocks in order to keep moths away. Is that an urban legend? Jesse didn't mention cedar at all. (It smells a lot better than mothballs, which are vile.)
The case about the Britta filter hit hard for me. Our family has constant discussions around our water filter - whether it's in the fridge, whether it's full, what temp the water is, etc.
But the entire discussion around waters, pebble ice, etc very much reminded me of this great ProZD video:
Judge John Hodgman's former employer and recent Road Court venue, the Coolidge Corner Theatre, is hosting a month-long program of Dracula movies in December.
First thing I thought of was "Oops .. All Draculas". They really can have any job.
[My daughters Josie and Louisa, of JJHO #580 “Death Cab or Sue Me”, as transcribed by Jo]
Jo: did you eat an apple from the bag?
Lou: yeah?
Jo: those are for the pie! You were supposed to have one from the bowl!
Lou: but i wanted one from the bag. Better apples
Jo: BUT THOSE APPLES ARE FOR THE PIE
Lou: YOU HAVE THE SAME NUMBER OF APPLES JUST ADD THE ONE FROM THE BOWL
Jo: THEY ARE DIFFERENT APPLES!!!
Lou: NO ONE WILL CARE IF ONE APPLE IS DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHER APPLES
Jo: I’M CALLING JOHN HODGMAN
Lou: YOU CAN’T CALL JOHN HODGMAN EVERY FUCKING TIME THIS HAPPENS!!!!
An engaged couple disagrees about a series of card games in the plaintiff's family. The plaintiff grew up with the understanding that these card games are poker variants. The defendant says they are JUST MADE UP.
I love a good album. Others not so good, no thanks, not for me.
Greatest intro of all time!
When Kansas gets its turn in the “E Pluribus Motto” spotlight, it should not be overlooked that in addition to the usual bird and song, we have an “official cage elevator.” https://www.kslegislature.gov/li/b2023_24/statute/073_000_0000_chapter/073_035_0000_article/073_035_0001_section/073_035_0001_k/
I’m enjoying the podcast, John and Janet!
