Best bank for receiving international transfers in Mauritius

Hello,

I did some freelance work and i need to know what bank charges less for inward SWIFT/IBAN transfer from abroad. In my experience I noticed MCB charges 15% as VAT + some other fees.

Do you guys have an alternative?

Thanks

If I do a computer course in university will I be able to get a job after 3 years?

My sibling got a job secured before graduating University. She did her course in the computer science department. And I wanted to follow her footsteps. But I'm wondering if jobs would still be available after 3 years in the IT department.

Thinking of relocating to Mauritius on a Premium Visa

I'm thinking of moving to Mauritius with my 5-year old in the next few months on a premium visa. I'd like to know a bit more in the cost of apartment rentals, groceries, transportation and schools. Is $2000/months a realistic budget to cover all of my expenses?

Hello,

I’m reaching out to gather some insights and ideas. I currently have around $30,000 to invest in a business venture in Mauritius. While I have a few concepts in mind, I thought it would be valuable to hear suggestions from this community. I’d also appreciate recommendations for any business networking events on the island. Thank you in advance for your input!!!

Why do so many Mauritian homes have these furnitures in their living room to display glassware?

You know, these wooden furnitures with glass shelves and mirror background. They proudly glasses, plates, saucers. This is so old-fashioned, what's with that?

Looking for some new friends in Mauritius as I don’t have any in Mauritius

So, I am 22m , I returned to Mauritius 4 years ago and due to family business I couldn’t join university and because of that I don’t have any friends and most of my friends are in India. Plus , it gets lonely sometimes and I am also so lost about our culture and language, I can’t even speak creole. I hoping to meet some new friends around my age group to hang out and have fun and do some stuff. I am bit shy in the start but I do open up after some hangouts.

Is there any other bus route apart from 168 and 66C that goes to Grand Bassin?

Planning to go over there this Friday and so far I, saw only the bus route 168 which according to the online planning, they go there only 3 time a day and the other, 66C has no planning. So is there any other bus route that goes over there? I don't want to be sitting duck until the last bus 16h10 depart.

Anyone who lives around Candos/Quatre Bornes knows a CDT/CDC teacher there?

Hi there, i'm curious to know if there's still a teacher around that area who used to teach those subjects back then (around 20yrs ago, 2004-2005) . She was my teacher in secondary school and i've been in touch with most of my then secondary school teachers but i can't seem to find her. Does anyone know about her if she still teaches or not? I recall her name was "Swambar" or "Swamber". Thank you.

Where can I learn about the Sega for anthropological research in Mauritius

I am writing a dissertation on Mauritian culture and would like to know where might I attend a performance of the Sega (in a setting where it would not be offensive to take notes), but also interview an instructor, or someone who is knowledgable about the historical origins and cultural significance about the dance. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Is there a national cultural dance association or anything like that? I also wouldn't mind being able to attend a similar performance of the Geet Gawai or any of the traditional Bhojapuri dances practiced in Mauritius.

Thanks in advance.

How to report a company for safety and service they refuse to provide?

Hello, am currently working in a company where I've been having issues and been addressing it to the director but he never listens. Where can I go to report this please?

  1. Unsafe Storage and Workspace Limitations: The office is filled with toner cartridges, which are precariously placed due to a lack of adequate storage racks. Toners frequently fall, resulting in injuries to employees, and the cramped conditions leave barely any space to work safely.

  2. Pest Infestation and Dust: The office is infested with rats, and the space is filled with dust. These conditions pose health risks, especially for those with allergies or respiratory issues.

  3. Inadequate Water Facilities:

Drinking Water: There is no provision for clean drinking water in the office.

Toilet Facilities: The toilets lack running water, so we are forced to fill water bottles to use in the toilet for flushing and cleaning, which is unhygienic and challenging. It gets tougher for female employees when they're having their menses and can't even clean themselves nor discard their sanitary pads.

  1. Lack of Safety Measures on Stairs: The staircase lacks proper handrails, and toner cartridges are often stored on the steps, creating tripping hazards that could result in serious injuries.

So we're planning to visit Mauritius from India for our honeymoon from December 18-24 ie 7 days as I know this is the peak season time what all things I should know and beware of. I needed local perspective on what to expect in terms crowd and prices, how I can upto certain extent avoid crowd without compromising on well know destinations and try and get best prices on hotels and things while buying. Also the things to be careful about since it is the peak season.

Is Halloween often celebrated in Mauritius from your observations?

I've heard about many Halloween parties having become more and more common throughout the years. While I still lived in Mauritius, I however never saw anyone going trick or treating. From what my Mauritian friends have been telling me, dressing up for Halloween has become more common with an increase in the cosplaying culture on the island. Have you ever dressed up for Halloween and if you're planning to do so this year, what are you dressing up as

Are Mauritians interested in spirituality (proactive spiritual activities)?

Mainly what the question says. ☝️ But for extra context: I am not asking about Hindus who regularly go to temples during festival celebrations or Christians who go to church as a part of their tradition. I am asking about spirituality in a sense of actively working on themselves - daily meditation, yoga, introspection, reading scriptures for the sake of enriching moral values, etc.

I am asking that question because in Europe where I come from, younger generations (25-35 years old) are becoming increasingly interested in spirituality and turning inwards due to dissatisfaction they experience in the outside world. I am living in Mauritius since almost 4 years now, but I do not see similar interest like in Europe and the US.

Small businesses with only Rs100k capital (Mauritius)

Hi everybody 🤗 I need some advice from you all (if possible) regarding small businesses in Mauritius; I have only Rs100k to invest. I have some ideas 💡 for e.g. buy/sell vegetables or baby clothes, but these are very common nowadays, I see people are selling via social media, too. So I'm not too confident, to be honest. I also get cold feet because I have no idea where/how to begin in the first place, like where to register (if we need to).

If someone has this knowledge, 🙏 please do share with us, I hope this post may help others, too.

Thanks in advance ☺️

Honeymoon advice- Lux Le Morne vs Lux Grande Gaube in August

Hi, need some advice. Looking to go on honeymoon in late July/early August. Narrowed it down to two resorts- either the Lux Le morne or Lux grande Gaube. Really stuck with which would be better, especially considering the weather. All do would you recommend going with all-inclusive or half-board? Thank you

Finally got to Mauritius, driving a scooter and lost my wallet

Hi everyone, as per the title, we are getting around on a scooter. Yesterday I was having lunch near Grand Baie and paid for it. Then I left a couple of things in the scooter and went to cocoloko for a drink. This morning I noticed that my wallet is gone but I am not sure where I left/lost it. I went to both places but have had no luck as if they have seen it. My guess is that it might have fallen and somebody found it, took the cash and maybe threw away the rest? Is there maybe a lost and found of the area? Any suggestions on how to find it? I have retraced my steps in every way but of course no luck. Any suggestions is appreciated.
