A memory or two.
RIP Dark Mark
2/22
I had not seen this until today. At some point, Van and Barrett played some late period Trees songs with some other people. https://youtu.be/FlsYKZ9zzgQ?feature=shared
I can't get enough of this performance. This and the 4AD session just get me every time. I would be happy to take any recommendations you guys have for other live Lanegan performances I need to see. Steven Janssens... what a treasure. I realized I have less guitar swagger than I should because he took it all.
In the song called The Wild People, Mark sang some parts in a way that reminds me of how Townes van Zandt sang parts in Rake (a crushing song I am extremely fond of).
Extremely grateful and happy Mark covered Snake Song, it made me wish Mark covered Rake, too.
Marvelous, then, to hear instead an original song by Mark whose vocal arrangement invoked for me Rake, and made lyrics from Mirrored spring to mind and resonate, like gifts from the grave: One reflection sees the other blind Look deep in each Two tombstones shine.
RIP Townes and Mark, my two favourite poetic lyricists and singers.
To Kitty (RIP), who introduced me to the music of Townes: I would've liked to introduce you to the music of Mark.
Anyone else reminded of Rake when they listen to The Wild People?
Just saw one on a website that was in less than good condition and they were asking $5,000 usd for it. Woof. Anyone else.ever see copies of it anywhere? I reached out to the publisher and they confirmed that it was out of print and they had no plans to make more 😞
Some of the best opening lines to a song ever...
"When all is done and turned to dust And insects nest inside my bones..."
Went to the show at the roundhouse but didn’t really see or hear anything about it. Still want to know if it was just a name to attach to the show or if there is some way to support it, any info you guys have is appreciated!
Mark talks about alot of his musical influences and I love that type of article, so thought I would share
On Rockaplast, the band was great, but Lanegan was so bad off that his vocals were eclipsed by Gary Lee Conner. The Jools Holland show that followed was a little better, but short. I have never found any video of the last show that they played in Seattle, just audio, though it sounds great.
Wow
you know, i've read "sing backwards and weep," and did some digging, then watched this banger of a show with "Screaming Trees," with Josh Homme. Damn, it's a banger of a show https://youtu.be/bFzyoyysGcA?si=UXVcnnBiDnAg6hAS and there's a lot of other amazing videos of the band, so I wonder, Mark's disparaging of the band and tours are wrapped up in his own addicted experience while the band was obviously pretty damn good! Plus, Josh Homme joining them fresh out of Kyuss is pretty cool. In fact, I think that Josh's time in "Screaming Trees," really influenced "Queens of the Stone Age," in a lot ways yet to be discussed. Anyway, that's my thoughts on this whole thing, Caveat Emptor!
