a sub for celebrating Mark Lanegan's life, career, and music
/r/MarkLanegan
It's from Last Rungs, and it goes: "Leaving the bed was torture for him. His condition reminded me of the kid Tim the day before he died, unable to get up off the ground, his legs swollen to twice their normal size".
I can't understand who this 'kid Tim' is and what the comparison is about.
Appreciate it’s incredibly unlikely, but does anyone have 1-2 spare ticket(s) or can’t make it any longer? Lanegan means the world to me but I just wasn’t able to secure tickets during the general sale. I’ve even considered paying an outrageous sum on third party websites, but can’t bring myself to reward some PoS seeking to profit of genuine fans (tickets are all £300+(!!!)).
I finished Sing Backwards and Weep last week. Epic! I learned on the sub that I Am the Wolf was his words on the recording of each album. This was to be my very next book to read, as I assumed it would include a description of each song and my mouth watered at the thought. When I finished Sing Backwards and Weep, I read a sample of I Am the Wolf in the Books app and it had a page and a quarter description of The Winding Sheet (some of which I read in SBaW) then each song's lyrics. Is that the format for each album, a page or so of details with the lyrics?
Is anybody confident that we'll ever see the 4LP box set again at a semi reasonable price? Still pretty gutted that I missed out and I look for it almost daily. (Mostly for the book).
It has popped up here and there for $320aud or so from time to time but I just couldn't justify the cost.
Be nice if they just released a few more copies
Mark frequently mentioned his Welsh heritage (in the rocket magazine, his books, and online) I know his nan was born in Wales and that he was quarter Welsh, but does anyone know where in Wales this can be traced back to specifically?
I find it shocking that despite being one of the greatest musicians of the past 50 years (at least in my opinion) growing up I never heard really anyone in Wales mention him alongside Manic Street Preachers, John Cale or any other of the Welsh/Welsh adjacent musicians and would love to learn more about that connection.
Are these original Mark lyrics, or may he have borrowed them? Just an incredible line (among so many). Just wondering.
If anyone still needs to grab one. Can vouch for Norman too if you've never used them, they've been supplying all my vinyl without issue for the past 10 years.
Based in the UK but also ship international.
Have been in a funk for a long time and live music is one of the things I have lost interest in. One reason is that I am missing the endorphin rush of going to Mark’s shows. Is there any current act that plays smaller clubs that have his same vibe? Dark, moody, mid-tempo rockers and ballads, introspective lyrics? Basically Mark surrogates lol?
I’m gonna start saving up for a tattoo of one of Lanegan’s lyrics. “Here Comes That Weird Chill”
It hit hard but I was curious as to what other lines that people would get as a tattoo(s)
Loved them both, especially their different perspectives on time in the Trees. Based on what Barrett Martin shared, it sounds like him and Lanegan gave each other room to talk about certain times in the band exclusively in their respective memoirs, which made them a nice complement to each other in addition to just how tonally different they are.
Having gone back and relistened to both audiobooks, one of my favorite parts is Barrett Martin's description of Lanegan living with him at his bungalow in Seattle right after Lanegan got out of rehab. They were both in their mid-30s at that point, newly sober and at the tail end of young adulthood. Apparently they spent a stretch of time just sitting on Martin's back porch, grilling together and laughing about how they managed to survive the past few years. It was a really nice interlude after all the chaos, violence, and death that came before, even if them living together didn't last very long due to Lanegan's old life driving him out of Seattle one final time.
Really glad they both released memoirs, and glad Barrett is still here.
Just discovered "I Walk Beside Your Love" with Mark singing yesterday, and the other song Mark sung that night with Master's of Reality "Lover's Sky"; both of which have moved me deeply for many reasons I can't explain. And if you haven't heard the "Lover's Sky" Mark and Chris sung it masterfully too. I'd like to express both my gratitude to Chris and as he, I believe, says at the end: "Thank you, Mark".
Folks - I have one extra seated ticket for the roundhouse show. Would like to see it go to a fan. Am happy to meet in person on the night of the show. Drop me a PM if interested
Cat People (Putting Out Fire) - Martyn LeNoble & Christian Eigner feat. Mark Lanegan & Dave Gahan click
So, I discovered this song a few weeks ago and just loved it! Sometimes I’m a bit slow, so after listening to the song a few times I had an inkling, the line “And I′ve been putting out the fire with gasoline” sounded familiar, but it took me another week to realize it. It is a Bowie cover! I like how Mark used to make a cover his own, putting so much soul in a song that I often like it better than the original (think Carry Home from the Gun Club).
And it feels like little gifts, his repertoire is so massive, there will always be more to discover.
Anyone else who had a nice surprise since his death?
I know Mark had an opportunity to write some songs for Johnny Cash and he turned it down. What were some other big opportunities he had that he missed out on because of poor decision making?
I became an even bigger fan after reading "Sing Backwards and Weep" in part because it was unbelievable to me how much music he recorded and released while living under the weight of his addictions. Something about the beauty of his music juxtaposed against the frequent ugliness of his life just made it all that more amazing to me. I don't know how he cranked out that much music - GOOD music at that.
I was lucky enough to see him perform in the late 90s at a club as he toured in support of his first covers record (I think - my own alcoholicm layers its own fuzziness upon the fuzziness that time offers us). Prior to his set, he sat quietly in the pool room adjacent to the performance space, legs crossed, arms folded, nursing a beer quietly. No one spoke to him and he spoke to no one, just quiet with his thoughts.
Though my friends and I were there to hear him, we dared not approach him or bother him - he had that unapproachable thing down to an art form. We glanced at him and quietly whispered "that's him!" trying to appear cool and nonchalant as we clumsily played Cut-throat to pass the time. Part of me wishes we said hi, and part of me is glad we followed the urge to give him space. It was a great show, his performance simple, stark and direct.
anyone want to try and guess the set list by guests?
my guess Dave Ghan will sing revival (since he already covered it on his shows)
and hopefully josh will the do Hangin tree
Have not seen mike johnson, jeff fielder nor duff on the list, do you think they could make an appearance?
I'm wired awake on coffee & bourbon. It's 3am here where I live, and I'm excited AF. Where should I (50yrM) stay in London? Coming for a week, just wanna meet cool folks and hear great music. Lanegan pub meetup?
I listened to Johnny Cash sing "Sunday Morning Coming Down" in honor of Kris Kristofferson and couldn't help but think Lanegan would have killed it!
thats all - just really hoping that they film/release the tribute show so that everyone gets to see it
The only catch is to get the £30 membership. Demand seems to be high even for the presale though!
Good luck, and see you there!
