For the discussion of all things MapTool, the Virtual TableTop app from RPTools.net. LFG, bugs, macro talk, whatever, just keep it related to MapTool.

I am trying to run a 5 player game (so 6 people total) on maptool, and i have all my maps for the first few session and a little bit onwards completed. been workin on this campaign for about 3-4 weeks. session 1 is saturday, and when i was asking someone to help make sure certain things were working, he was unable to connect. i look it up and it turns out that i need to do some stuff with portforwarding and fiddling with my router. since the guide was nice enough to give me step by step instructions on what to do to do this, and what it does, i figure i could do this if i was at home. the issue is, i am at uni. i am using university wifi, meaning i have absolutely 0 access to the router in any capacity. i wasnt really concerned with hosting until i discovered this, as my uni has pretty damn good wifi (i get 4mbps at home so that might be a bias though).
is there any tools out there that can help? i know things like hamachi exist, but thats limited to 5 people. i tried using a tool called zerotier but that did not work either with the guy i was having test it out with me.
I make my own pixel art tokens, and I love them, but I want to implement animated tokens to add immersion and such.
Any recommendations on how I can do that?
I hope someone can help me as the orientation of this framework, unfortunately I am not able to change anything because I do not know the programming techniques, but I hope I can do it if someone follows me. The problem is visible in the attack & spellcasting window, but also in Equipment, you can see from the image that the entries are not in column and I can not interact with them. Insert them yes but then I am not able to remove them
My players like their paper sheets, which is fine. I like my macros, which is fine. But I can't do both easily! Do you just grab appropriate numbers off character sheets and add them to maptool, do you force the players to make them in maptool, or something else?
I have a framework for a game involving a million exceptions, and running it requires a stack size of 8. It used to be I could tell people to adjust stack size in the launcher, but the launcher seems to be missing in more recent versions of MT. Is there an easy way to help people adjust stack size now that doesn't involve digging through the .cfg file?
I'm aware that the isometric grid in MapTool is not true isometric, and that there are discussions about how to convert a regular top down map into MapTool isometric, such as this post. However, what I'm interested is if it is possible to convert a map created in true isometric into MapTool isometric. I took a true isometric map and decreased the height to 85%, and it lines up with MapTool isometric fairly well, and I might be able to further resize it to get to align properly, but I wanted to see if it was already known how to to convert a true isometric map into MapTool isometric?
I'm looking for a collection of dd2vtt, cmpgn or maps with already walls compatible with MapTool.
Any advice?
(even paid ones, I really struggle to find them in a "massive" way)
I would like to browse through several of them before writing a part of the story, thanks!
I want to run Warhammer Fantasy Battles with it. I can manually move each token in a unit to wheel 'em about, but it'd be a lot more convenient if I could just select all of them and pivot the lot at once.
... Or maybe I should just use a singe token/rectangular-image-of-sorts to represent the whole unit? Hmm.
Any suggestions?
I've been seen more and more on the VTT spaces, tokens that have the token inside but, lt's say the knight in the circle have it's spear ready and shield ready and those get out of the token, sill inside de 1x1 square.
Same for for exemple a dragon with 5x5 that has it's wings and tail bursting from the token image, or a demon and it's horns.
Basically, an "Overlay Layer" above the Portrait layer, where we could put a already cut png to fit over it, maybe after adjusting, make the portrait and the Overlay link so moving one move the other, so you can get a better position.
Exemples of what i'm talking bellow!
As suggested I tried pulling the pictures into the background layer but even than the quality is not the same as orginal
A question for my fellow dms and maptool-users. I create my maps in Inkarnate and download them as jpgs in 4k or 8k.
Than I create a map in maptools and set the background and fog of war to black and import the picture as map. When I do it this way it seem to import the picture not in the same quality as it is shown Inkarnate.
Am i doing something wrong or is that normal? The problem is that i use large maps and zoom into the areas I need. And zoomed in it just does not look nice
It looks like MapTool game aids are legal for GURPS, after all!
For years I've sighed at the lack of MapTool add-ons and extensions for GURPS, partly because, I was told, SJGames doesn't allow using any computer aid to replace its books. As I understood it, using computer aids would mean that you wouldn't need to buy the GURPS manuals. What a pity.
Recently I looked more closely into this, spurred by my coming across various YouTube videos about GURPS. In particular, the virtual tabletop Foundry has GURPS Game Aid for it. But I don't use Foundry; I use MapTool. I asked about this in an earlier message, and was told that Foundry actually has a lot of piracy (I doubt this is true; in any case, GURPS Game Aid has SJGames' blessing).
And then I looked more closely at GURPS Initiative Tool Version: 1.7.0 which says:
"GURPS is a trademark of Steve Jackson Games, and its rules and art are copyrighted by Steve Jackson Games. All rights are reserved by Steve Jackson Games. This game aid is the original creation of Damian Small and is released for free distribution, and not for resale, under the permissions granted in the Steve Jackson Games Online Policy."
In fact, if you look at SJGames Online Policy (https://www.sjgames.com/general/online_policy.html), it actually specifically says it's okay to make game aids for GURPS, and even specifies the above text to be put into your game aid. It says:
"So, does that mean that I can ... Create a character generator or other game aid? ... If you mean a 'game aid' or 'player aid' program, yes, you certainly can, if it's for a PC-type computer and you include the appropriate notices."
There are a few conditions, of which the most significant is probably that you have to distribute the game aid for free without charge. Also, they don't allow mobile apps yet.
So, I don't know why people say that it is forbidden to have GURPS game aids. Maybe it's because these discussions on web forums predated the newest version of the SJGames Online Policy, but that policy was from 2012, over a decade ago!
It's true that you can't reproduce the charts and tables and explain the rules in such a way that people don't have to buy the GURPS rulebooks any more, but that's not what the game aid does. In fact, you *have* to know the rules to understand what the game aid is doing.
So, let's dispel this myth about "You can't make GURPS add-ons for MapTool", and I would love this underrated virtual tabletop, that is so flexible, generic, and universal, to gain support for one of the most useful ttRPG systems of all, GURPS.
If I have missed anything, and if anyone would like to correct me, I am willing to listen.
Does r/MapTool support Animated video maps like this:
https://youtu.be/uC_kLfTgxmk?si=bRmkundgQey_aFUg
If yes, do you have to convert it to a video file and import it in, or can you use the URL?
I have created custom tokens in tokentool and I have put them into my game.
I can edit them so that the portrait appears when you mouse over them.
But I have to do it on every map for all of my custom tokens.
Is there a way to save the token with the selected portrait so I don't have to redo this every time I make a new map?
Thanks so much I searched through this subreddit but couldn't find the answer.
My friends and I were having problems with our server, not being able to load some maps or characters and they would just appear as red X's or question marks. This got to the point that for some of us when those maps/tokens were on the field we could not join the server at all until they were deleted. Then one of the guys said they had a solution, it involved one of the icons in the bottom right (not the blue bar) and then everything went wrong. Now none of us are able to connect to our old server all it said is 1/33 loaded 1/33 cashed. We have all uninstalled map tools, gone to previous versions and have tried everything we could with no results. Anyone have any ideas/solutions?
I'm currently creating a All-in-One Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage Campaign in Maptool and the Cavernous levels are beginning to drain my energy with the symmetrical tools that MapTool has. Is there a Brush option or similar?
I'm new to MapTool. The map solution I use for D&D right now is bringing a map into Photoshop and putting an opaque black layer above it which can be erased for fog of war.
MapTool seems like a better option, but I'm worried about the learning curve getting in the way of my campaign. If I could import premade 5e campaign maps then that would certainly lower the barrier to entry.
I'm on Ubuntu 23.10 and when I add my own tokens then in each folder I have tokens in there is a .[IMAGE_NAME] file along site IMAGE_NAME.jpg and both show up in the asset library. It is pretty annoying as it makes finding the right tokens more difficult as these extra files shows up as question marks. So is there a way to get MapTool to ignore these files? I know I can search - but sometimes I like to get inspired by the tokens, which gets ruined by this.
Was not an issue on my Mac so I suspect this is an issue specific to at least Ubuntu.
Basically, I am working on a map for a hex crawler, so I want the hexes to be visible even with the fog of war. Is there a way to put the hexes over the fog of war? Or at least have them show up?
Hi, I have been using Maptools for a while and have been doing simple coding, however with the new update it changed the UI of the Token Property Window and I can't find myself able to copy and paste the properties I have, just wondering if anyone knows a fix or a way to copy and paste token properties? thank you
Hello there,
I'm a Maptool user since ages and got a fair number of issues over the years but this time, I'm clueless.
Here it is... After swapping for maptool 1.14.3 (previously using 1.11, which worked neatly), I get that following issue
Whenever I want to drag and drop any image (png or jpg), I'm forbidden to do it. I don't get a message box (like a java error), I don't get the (in)famous red X in place of the picture. Instead, my mouse pointer switch to a "no parking"-like grey icon and that's all. I can't drop on the map area of maptool (if I release the mouse button, just nothing happens).
I'm speaking of image type and size I routinely dropped on Maptool. It's also unrelated to the layers, I cannot drag and drop on any layer.
Seems maptool is no longer considered a valid destination for the drag and drop.
I updated java, uninstalled all versions (since I saw the update didn't clean the old), reinstalled the latest java. No change, still unable to drag and drop.
Any suggestion?
EDIT: I discovered that 1.14, if installed on my main hard drive, is refusing to allow drag and drop. HOWEVER, simply moving the Maptool folder to another (secondary) hard drive, the issue no longer exists.
Summary
Go figure...
I'm VERY new to maptool, but it seemed like a good option for our table. I'm running an offline irl game, and was planning on having it just run on my PC and letting my PCs borrow the mouse for movement, but my intention is to have this play as just a map and position tracker, basically. My plan is to run two instances and connect and have the player instance projected on a screen. Does anyone have experience using it like this? I have quite a bit of time before session zero so if this seems like a bad plan i have time to bail
Also, templates are really confusing me right now, is there a way to delete the shapes? I tried the erase option (shift+drag i think it was?) but it just left another shadow. My current solve is to just undo every time so it's not a problem that really requires its own post
Got this tool to use for fully local table campaigns, along with my projector aimed at the table.
How do I have this normal edit mode on my laptop screen, but view a full screen on my other monitor (the projector) including fog of war, so that I can see the full dungeon on the laptop while the players only see explored areas?
I tried looking online and did what i thought was a decent sweep for this option but can't seem to find anything. I wouldn't even mind hiding it my page as well, but I'm hoping for a fullscreen of just the map. No toolbar, no layer window.
Greetings, I hope everything is going well!
I'm using 5e's Maptool Framework, version 2.5.7 (I think its creator is Rodrigo Takehara, or at least he's the one who made the tutorials) and I don't know if there's any way to hide the compendium from my players.
As a DM I would like to keep the upcoming maps, enemy stats, etc. as a secret, and this framework is just too good not to use it for that reason. Can someone help, me please?
PS: I know less than nothing programming-wise, so please be patient with me in case I need to rread some code or something similar :,)
Could somebody possibly explain to me what this error message means? I got this when I tried to log into my GM’s server on Monday. I’ve had it before, usually after a windows update, and I find the only way to make it go away is to reset my computer to a previous restore point. Since doing that is a colossal pain, I’d like to hopefully find out there’s an easier solution. We’re using V1.11 I believe. Thank you very kindly.
Last time I'd used MapTool it was just Java, but now apparently are DEB/RPM.
The RPM doesn't work on Tumbleweed (openSUSE), but I still have a Linux Mint laptop lying around so was able to quickly get a few tokens generated via the DEB install.
Any chance of a portable solution emerging? AppImage or Flatpak would be idea, I think, on the side of anyone being able to use it, and flathub appears to be growing quite a bit, and could increase visibility to the project.
