How is the winters in Malta ?

I come from Northern Europe and am used to snow and freezing temperatures. I have lots of knit sweaters, thick pants and jackets to keep me warm, but I'm moving to Malta soon. I wonder if it is really worth bringing so many winter clothes with me. I have a rain jacket because I know Malta has tropical rains in the winter, but I am thinking of selling my winter sweaters and jackets. Should I bring them or just sell them?

Piano in a public space or publicly available?

Hi everyone!

I'm visiting Malta. I also happen to play the piano and I of course couldn't bring my instrument with me. I'd love to get to play/practice a bit while in the island but I don't even know where to start looking.

Is there any public space (library, music schools...) that has pianos available for walk-in practicing? Or pianos in public spaces (restaurants, hotels, malls) that anyone can play? Or does a kind soul in this sub own a piano and doesn't mind me coming an playing?

TIA

Malta could turn into a totalitarian one-party state within 10 years

Over the last few months we're seeing worse and worse news from our democracy.

  • The government is making legal changes to magisterial enquiries making it harder for corruption to be investigated.
  • The government is recently re-drawing electoral districts, particularly in places where it is weaker.
  • Parliament is literally a "law farm" with poor attendance, and discussions which do not really move the needle in terms of policy.
  • All other forms of government (such as local councils) are subordinate to the central government.
  • Ministers are not declaring their assets in government.

All this points that we as a country are on our way to a situation similar to China, Cuba, Hungary or Albania - systems where democracy either doesn't exist, or is very fake and eroded. Malta will no longer be a western democracy and all citizens must be subservient and dependent to a political class which permanently rules over the country.

There are several countries in this situation, but so far this wasn't what Malta was, it seriously changes the aspirations and potential of our country.

How do you feel about this?

Are there any villages or zones in Malta where the majority of people aren't Maltese?

For example any villages or zones with a majority of Italians or any other nationality?

ETF capital gains tax for non-domiciled Malta resident?

Hi, Getting a bit confused with the wording of CGT information out there. Currently I'm Malta resident, non-domiciled and use IBKR to invest in ETFs on a monthly basis. Any comments are appreciated.

  • Are realised gains on ETFs classed as 'foreign'? i.e. in my case not subject to CGT?
  • If these gains are transferred to Maltese bank account is this classed as 'remittance' and subject to CGT? If they are transferred to Wise or Revolut and the gains are spent in Malta is this different?

-In the future if I buy a house here in Malta, would I be considered 'domiciled'?

Thanks

Tomorrowland - First 20 - Who are they?

If anyone managed to be among the first 20 to register in Malta, please let me know.

Me and four of my friends - all residing in Malta - tried, and we all failed. We had the registration page open for over an hour before it started in December.

We don’t know a single person who managed to get it, so I'm curious. Do you know?

Moving to Malta for work – looking to meet new people

Hey everyone! I’m a 27-year-old Italian guy, and tomorrow I’ll be moving to Malta for work. It’s my first time here, so I’d love to meet new people to hang out with, explore the island, and maybe grab a drink.

If you’re up for meeting or have any tips for a newcomer, feel free to reach out!

Question about 1 year rental contract cancellation

Hello everyone,

I have a simple question regarding my one-year rental contract. I arrived in Malta around mid-October and, with the help of an agency, found an apartment. The agency recommended that I sign a one-year contract, even though I knew I would only be staying for six months until mid-April. This was to save money and ensure I secured the apartment.

Now, I want to inform my landlord that I will be leaving the apartment. I understand that, according to Maltese national law, there is a one-month notice period, with a minimum mandatory stay of six months. My questions are:

  1. When should I notify my landlord? If my contract started in mid-October 2024 and I plan to leave in mid-April 2025, can I give notice before mid-March and stay exactly six months?
  2. Or do I need to wait until I have completed six months before giving notice, meaning I would effectively have to pay for seven months?

I have asked several agencies, but none have provided a clear answer. I have the impression that the second case applies, but I would appreciate hearing your insights or experiences.

Thanks a lot!

Recommendations: Parkinson’s specialist

Does anyone have recommendations for a specialist experienced in Parkinson’s disease? I’m searching on behalf of my father. The location doesn’t have to be limited to Malta—anywhere within the EU is fine. I’d also appreciate hearing from anyone who has experience with Parkinson’s or knows someone living with it.

I'm from libya, can I stay in Malta?

Hi there, PixQuilly here.

I'm a 27M from Libya. I work as a Software Engineer and there are a couple of companies I'd like to have the chance of submitting an application to. Thing is, these companies that are located in Malta require people who are in Malta. So I won't get in through the door if I'm not.

Long story short, I want to relocate to Malta to look for better job opportunities (whether with these companies or not) and so I was wondering for how long can I stay in Malta and what kind of Visa can I get?

About Employment Visa Application Through VFS Global

Hello everyone,

I received my Approval in Principle letter on 18th of November 2024 and applied for Employment Visa through VFS Global Turkey.

Funny thing the Vfs Global agent "accidentally" applied for "Long Term non-touristic" instead of work visa category and my application refused by Identita after waiting for 5 weeks...

A week ago we arranged my new flight tickets and hotel bookings etc. with my company lawyer and re-applied again. After this application, I realized that Vfs global agents had chose "Long term extended" visa type with the "temporary employment visa" subcategory.

Contacted with them and explained I am not temporary employee and they claimed there is no "work permit" option available in their system and thats the reason they had chose "temporary employment" option... But I am not going there for temporary employment.

Also my other friends previously applied under "work permit" subcategory a year ago.

My lawyer claimed that temporary emloyment subcategory also okay but I am hesitated to get refused again...

I created ticket on identita but no response yet.

I wonder if they re about to reject my application since I am not going there "temporary".

In my work contract only mentioned about "probation" period of 6 months otherwise there is no period mentioned.

(Vfs headquarter in Turkiye claimed that they are processing work visa applications under "temporary employment visa" category for a week now, since there is no option available)

Thanks in advance!

Epic double charge

So today, I got double charged for Epic 01/01/2025 bills for both my mobile and home internet plans. I have been an Epic customer for almost 3 years and this never happened to me before. The only difference is that I didn't pay the bills immediately like I usually do, I just paid it few days ago. Has this ever happened to anyone before? Should I expect the transaction to be reverted back soon? Is it something that can be easily settled with Epic?
