A place for VAPORWAVE and VAPORWAVE adjacent electronic music artists to come together and discuss the production process.
Welcome to makingvaporwave, a place for vaporwave producers to discuss the production process and share tips, tricks, and ideas. You are welcome to share your music in the pinned thread but please...
DO NOT POST YOUR MUSIC AS A NEW TOPIC
Please understand how chaotic it would become if every track / album had its own topic. This is not r/vaporwave. Please still share your music! Just keep it in the pinned thread.
We also have a thread for callouts for your label and collabs, no need to start a new topic for this. It will be deleted.
Threads are for discussing audio production in vaporwave only, if your thread is not about production, making music / sound / playing with synths it will be deleted.
Once again... DO NOT POST YOUR MUSIC AS A NEW TOPIC
Also no more threads like these because we have them over and over and you can just search for the answer and also I'll try to answer some here:
I'm just starting out, what do I do?
Search through this sub for advice. Look at different DAWs and find what works for you. Experiment, play with different effects, synths and learn how they work and how they react when you change things.
Here's my first song, what do you think?
Please post this in the pinned Producer's thread, we don't need a new topic for this.
What effect does Telepath use?
I guess a number of effects, but you're probably asking about a barberpole phaser, which is a phaser that sounds like it is constantly moving (usually upwards) but never reaching its destination.
What is the best synth for vaporwave?
This is kind of a trick question. How you use the synth is more important here. It won't be easy finding a synth that makes vaporwave the moment you hold down a note. The chords you play, and what octave they are etc all matter. Also effects are hugely important in making things sound 'vaporwave' and if a synth sounds vaporwave there's a good chance it has effects built in.
What synths do James Ferraro and Eyeliner use?
Again, many different types of synths and it depends on the release. Far Side Virtual features many basic ROMpler sounds. A ROMpler is an informal term for a synth that uses samples for oscillators rather than basic single cycle shapes (such as sine, saw, square). Korg M1 and Wavestation VSTs are a good place to start for these, but you can also make similar sounds by using a sampler with a single sound loaded that can be played like an instrument.
Please check out the makingvaporwave wiki, which contains links to our official FAQ, video and text tutorials, including entire VST series, and a link to our growing list of links to production resources (sample packs, soft synths, etc.). <These haven't been updated in a while but they are useful nonetheless>

Just wanted to share that it’s my favorite pitch shifter, for some reason it always sounds the smoothest!
Hello. I am new to music production. I have an intermediate understanding of how to use literally only Audacity. I do not know how to use anything else, but have 'obtained' both Ableton Live and FL Studio. My work so far, in my opinion, is actually decent. But it doesn't go farther than a few ambient loops with some samples thrown in there, and it never actually sounds like it does in my head. I seem to be limited by the tools I have to my disposal, and not knowing how to use them because I don't know which ones to use for what I want to make.
This boils down to me wanting to make vaporwave/plunderphonics, not directly copying christtt, but in general knowing what to use, and how to make sounds similar to his by the rigorous use of samples and (possibly?) instruments that go along with what I'm working on in the DAW.
What actual, physical instruments/tools would be immensely helpful for me, or for any beginner in regards to vaporwave and 'deathdream'?
What DAW should I learn to make music like John does?
How should one go about making Deathdream, what equipment is required for that genre, etc.
Thanks a lot, and I hope you all are doing good.
i made music a bit ago,so i have fl studio,a midi keyboard, all that stuff. And i fell in love with vaporwave music.I want to find the enstruments for it since i need them to start doing vapowave.Does anybody have links to plugins, synths, and drum packs i can use? Help would be really appreciated.
Hi there,
I'm currently working on new material and I find myself in a position where my old kontakt drum machines libraries don't give me what I want in terms of inspiration. I was wondering if any of you guys had suggestions for drums samples, plugins and whatever can produce drums patterns. Also I'd be curious to find what other producers are using to get their drums track; I'm going for classic vaporwave slowed down heavy snare kind of thing, but any suggestion would be appreciated, thanks
Hey everyone, I’m working on a vaporwave project and looking for artists to collaborate with. The idea is to release a remastered compilation of some of my old music, along with a deluxe edition featuring remixes from other artists in this scene. If enough people are interested in working on this compilation I’ll release the deluxe tracks on Bandcamp and share the profits with the collaborators. Hit me up in DM for more details!
I've been making a nice, eerie, ambient track, in the style I like, and it's coming along pretty well, but I put a lot of reverb and there's a lot of feedback in higher pitches, how do I correct this so it sounds less strong in some places but retaining it in others where the effect sounds decent?
Hey folks here's the monthly thread where you can post what you've been working on and give feedback on other people's work. I've been a massive fan of vaporwave for many many years, and now as I've started making my own music, I want to give this genre I love so much a shot.
My tastes have varied a lot over the years, where I had for example a big future funk phase, or later barber beats. Yet I don't really listen to it as it has run out of steam, as I've noticed vaporwave in general since 2020/2021. It can also get boring like lofi hiphop, where in these three genres, there's only a handful of artists whose music still sounds great and original after many years. Recently, I mainly listen to ambient and broken transmission stuff, as well as mallsoft. Artists like Nmesh, infinity frequencies, Telepath or Vcr-Classique, as well as the classics like Vektroid and Eccojams.
I'm thinking of going towards the eerie, the distorted, yet I'm not very good at sampling, I'd go with producing something original, however which sounds interesting. I've been listening to a lot of techno, house and synthwave too, all of which use few samples. Yet I also see how samples can be changed and distorted to create something entirely alien. However above all, I want to make something I'm satisfied by. I know it comes with practice.
I'm using Garageband as a DAW right now but planning to go towards Ableton eventually. I haven't figured out how to make good stuff with either.
I want to use something where I can separate sounds from my audio files. For example, separating the tire squealing sounds from a Formula One video

Find any good deals out there? Any deals you've been waiting for?
Any tips/tutorials on how write a warm, jazzy 80's-ish saxophone part?
Looking for vaporwave producers to follow. I've let my social media wither and die, so looking to invigorate it by following inspiring folks like you all.
Anyone on Mastodon or Bluesky? On Mastodon, I'm @ acid42, and on Bluesky it's @ acid42.com
Hello all. Had my 404 (MK2) for a lil while now. Wanna try my hand at making some vapor related stuff using samples and fx, would like to loop stuff too. Sample manipulation stuff. Any ideas? Thank u!!
https://youtu.be/LYb57fJzV7k?si=IoSJjcf4J3n771eh&t=17 Sound that comes in 17 seconds in. "Da Da Du Da Du" ? Working on recreating it to get better at making Vaporwave. Thanks in advance!
Hey everyone! I’ve recently been asked by a few people about how I approach my stuff, so I typed out some quick thoughts on it.
This was written up specifically for hushwave (ie begotten) but most of it is applicable to vaporwave as a whole so I figured I’d share it here for anyone that might find it useful as well!
If you have any questions or want me to elaborate just let me know!
1.) SAMPLE SELECTION - this can apply to all vaporwave, but is by far the most important rule. It’s hard to fuck up a good song but you can’t polish a turd. It also has to fit the vibe, cant describe it but I know it when I hear it and you can too.
2.) builds off of 1, but I like selecting tracks with big vocals and minimal instruments to allow space for the effects I put on the vocals to play out more.
3.) Delay. Delay everything. Delay something and then delay it again. It’s what can give vocals or percussion the wavy effect when a note overlaps the tail of the previous hit correctly.
4.) Do not ignore the low end. I filter it out and reintroduce it with its own effects, but whatever you do don’t just filter it all the way out and call it a day.
5.) Compression. Idk what it is but I like it.
6.) obviously a shit ton of reverb on mids-highs. Almost didn’t even make this a rule it’s so obvious.
7.) experiment! The genre is very much still in its infancy and almost all avenues are yet to be explored. I’m very interested in what people aside from me can do with it!
Hi!
I came across this album by BAKGROUND - UNTITLED and was amazed by the texture it has (sounds like old VHS/ PS1 soundtracks). I already use Sketchcassette/ RC20 in ableton but I never got this type of results.
Any idea on the FX chain and/or other vst that I might try to get similar results?

Does anyone know how to make late night lofi and how to master it and put effects on it?

I'm an educator working on a fully-accessible art exhibit that is a collaboration between art students and a center for the blind. Some of my students want to include audio in their projects and one student in particular wants this vintage Korean song in the exhibit... I was wondering if I could make a request to all the vaporwave artists here to turn this tune into a very nostalgic memory. It would be playing in the exhibit in two weeks. I'm imagining something between vapor-ambient, mallsoft, and slushwave - slow, nostalgic, and distant. Anyone want to give it a shot?
