A place for VAPORWAVE and VAPORWAVE adjacent electronic music artists to come together and discuss the production process.
Welcome to makingvaporwave, a place for vaporwave producers to discuss the production process and share tips, tricks, and ideas. You are welcome to share your music in the pinned thread but please...
DO NOT POST YOUR MUSIC AS A NEW TOPIC
Please understand how chaotic it would become if every track / album had its own topic. This is not r/vaporwave. Please still share your music! Just keep it in the pinned thread.
We also have a thread for callouts for your label and collabs, no need to start a new topic for this. It will be deleted.
Threads are for discussing audio production in vaporwave only, if your thread is not about production, making music / sound / playing with synths it will be deleted.
Once again... DO NOT POST YOUR MUSIC AS A NEW TOPIC
Also no more threads like these because we have them over and over and you can just search for the answer and also I'll try to answer some here:
I'm just starting out, what do I do?
Search through this sub for advice. Look at different DAWs and find what works for you. Experiment, play with different effects, synths and learn how they work and how they react when you change things.
Here's my first song, what do you think?
Please post this in the pinned Producer's thread, we don't need a new topic for this.
What effect does Telepath use?
I guess a number of effects, but you're probably asking about a barberpole phaser, which is a phaser that sounds like it is constantly moving (usually upwards) but never reaching its destination.
What is the best synth for vaporwave?
This is kind of a trick question. How you use the synth is more important here. It won't be easy finding a synth that makes vaporwave the moment you hold down a note. The chords you play, and what octave they are etc all matter. Also effects are hugely important in making things sound 'vaporwave' and if a synth sounds vaporwave there's a good chance it has effects built in.
What synths do James Ferraro and Eyeliner use?
Again, many different types of synths and it depends on the release. Far Side Virtual features many basic ROMpler sounds. A ROMpler is an informal term for a synth that uses samples for oscillators rather than basic single cycle shapes (such as sine, saw, square). Korg M1 and Wavestation VSTs are a good place to start for these, but you can also make similar sounds by using a sampler with a single sound loaded that can be played like an instrument.
Please check out the makingvaporwave wiki, which contains links to our official FAQ, video and text tutorials, including entire VST series, and a link to our growing list of links to production resources (sample packs, soft synths, etc.). <These haven't been updated in a while but they are useful nonetheless>

Does anyone know how to make late night lofi and how to master it and put effects on it?

I'm an educator working on a fully-accessible art exhibit that is a collaboration between art students and a center for the blind. Some of my students want to include audio in their projects and one student in particular wants this vintage Korean song in the exhibit... I was wondering if I could make a request to all the vaporwave artists here to turn this tune into a very nostalgic memory. It would be playing in the exhibit in two weeks. I'm imagining something between vapor-ambient, mallsoft, and slushwave - slow, nostalgic, and distant. Anyone want to give it a shot?
I noticed that a large number of Mallsoft tracks seem to have frequencies cut off beyond a threshold that is lower than normal when viewed through spectro. Included are just two examples, but it seems to be very common in the genre.
So my question is: Is this done intentionally, maybe as an artistic choice?
It's not the file compression (at least on the listener's end) as I checked FLACs as well. And even for compressed files, ~8.5khz is an exceptionally low cut-off for the codec and bitrate used (AAC VBR 256-320kbps).
I downloaded directly from the artists' Bandcamps.
Anybody know of any VSTs or Synths that can simulate "guitar solo" notes? Specifically long strums of a note or something? Think "Fresnel" by FM Skyline.

I've been getting into making vaporwave and Slushwave for the past few weeks now, and I've gotten a good grip on how most of it works and the techniques being used. I have been able to replicate (I'll be it amateurly), but this one song has eluded me long enough. I can't tell how or if the sample was paulstretched and it's driving me crazy. I don't want to make a one-to-one version of this album, just want to know the sampling technique being used here so I can apply it to my own work. Can anyone help me understand how the crazy bastard did it?
This is song/album in question https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfuNpWKTV7I&ab_channel=VaporMemory
and this is the sample being used (about the first 35 seconds) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBG_Vb1494c&ab_channel=AnitaMui-Topic
I love the VHS sound but hard to find VCRs pre hi-fi. Can I get a good sound by just recording the same track onto VHS until it degrades enough?
Hey you guys, do any of you know of labels that are looking for artists. I’ve tried a bunch but every single one of them say they have no room left on their roster. Any advice? Should I just stop looking for one and focus on the music? Thanks - Mary K
for a new album, i wanna take songs and use the midi files of them and make them sound super different with weird instrumentation. can i be sued for this? and if i do this dose this take making cassettes and cd's and selling them, of the picture? should i have a separate artist account for sampled midi stuff and non sampled stuff? Am i also allowed to perform these songs?( the midi sample stuff)

i wanna make some music like his music but i don't know if he makes his jazz or he just steals the samples from jazz songs
Long story short. I pick the music on Saturday nights, and I'm a vaporwave afficionado. Its been years now that I'm the guy in charge of the jukebox for my friend-group. I have playlists upon playlists, and I know what and when to drop at any given moment.
I'm not looking to going pro or anything, or even producing, or becoming an artist. I just wish I could step it up and make the whole experience more dynamic for them and for myself by taking a "DJ" role instead of just pressing play.
Of course, if I get the hang of it I wouldn't mind making my own stuff, but before that I just want to have fun!
What kind of equipment would I need to get started?

Im trying to get my music more out there, it's currently on soundcloud and im going to upload on bandcamp soon. What are the best ways to promote my music? I just want to get it out to as many people as possible. Big thanks in advance!
As a huge Chillwave/Vaporwave enthusiast, I simply cannot get enough of the classic track "Feel It All Around" by Washed Out so I'm excited to share my breakdown of the track with you all, hope you like it.

I am doing vaporwave and mallsoft, I have recently switched to Cakewalk and I don't know how to set a sample to tempo and how to set the pitch. Can someone help me?
Thanks!
