Hello everyone I am excited to be upgrading my current MB Pro (2017 I7 & 16GB Memory). However I am not sure which model I should get. The main reasons why I am looking to upgrade is because I am noticing it freezing when using my Dj software, it is not functioning correctly with laser engraver, and my desktop Mac (which is even older) randomly cuts off on me. I do a variety of things with my laptop and would like something to replace my desktop as well. I have done some coding and video editing as well and even though its not the fastest it still works for now. I know in the future I will be increasing the workload as I will be working on more projects as well as getting into making music. I know this will be an investment and will want something that has lasted me as long as my current MBP. Thank you in advance for any tips and recommendations
I’m looking for a flexible case for my 2019 MacBook Pro 16in. I know the best case is no case but I was hoping to find something I could see stickers through like the typical clear hardshell cases. However I’ve had multiple of those and they always chip/crack at the corners and don’t stay on afterwards.
After doing a bit of research I seemed to find soft cases online (like blue swan on Amazon for reference) for the newer 16in pros but couldn’t seem to find one for the old ones. Are they similar enough in size I could try to get one and make it work on the older model?
thanks in advance for any advice :)
In the office i work at a lot of my coworkers decided to upgrade to the new M4 MacBook Pros and i'm getting flack from them for still refusing to upgrade my M1 Pro 14 base config. I still feel like the M1 Pro is more than enough for most tasks.
Hi everybody,
I work in a creative field, I initially ordered an maxed out M4 Max Nano Texture display. After comparing it with the standard display, my biggest gripe was that it didn't get as bright and the the colors were less vivid. So I returned it to rethink.
Since, I returned it -- I've been back to Apple 3-4 times comparing nano tech with standard and I still cannot decide.
I came to the realization that when I am working at home, my primary screens are my two Dell U2723QE's (which actually have a semi-matte finish similar to the nano tech screen) my laptop is used as a tertiary display on the side.
Whenever I am not using my monitors, I am traveling or on the run in various locations which would likely result in the nano tech screen being more useful.
So after some thinking, I'm starting to feel as if the nano tech would be the better decision given my use cases. Sure I may like the standard display a bit more.. but 90% of the time when working at home, I'm using my monitors -- and when I'm traveling, or working at a cafe, nano tech would seem to be better.
I know it's my decision at the end of the day but looking for second opinions under my circumstances given my huge indecisiveness here.. thank you.
Coming from a 2017 intel I5 MBP for which I had to change the butterfly keyboard 4 times, this new apple silicon is pure joy.
Every time I lift the lid, sign in with my fingertip, and start using this machine, I can’t help but smile.
Using my Windows computer feels like wrestling with an outdated relic compared to the smoothness of macOS on this apple silicon.
Hey 👋 I will start studying Computer Science in a few months. Which configuration would make more sense: a 14” MacBook Pro with 16GB RAM and 512GB storage, or a 13” MacBook Air with 24GB RAM and 1TB storage? At the moment, I can’t really estimate how much computing power I’ll need for the tasks. I’d appreciate hearing about your experiences. Thanks!
So I have an option for buying a lightly used M2 Pro MBP (10C CPU 16C GPU) 16GB 1TB SSD for about $1480 and a brand bew M3 Pro 16GB 1TB for $2030 or a M3 MBAir 16GB 512GB SSD for about $1412. I'd mainly use KiCad for pcb layouts, Fusion 360 and AutoCad for mechanical design work. I aslo tinker with Adobe PS, AI for light editing work. Main programming languages I'd use are Python and R but I'm trying to learn web development with the MERN stack as well. What do you guys think. I'm coming from a 2017 Core i5 MacbookAir and Asus Tuf A15 with Ryzen 7 4000 16GB GTX 1650ti (The markup is due to the heavy tax imposed on apple products where I live.)
My Mac Book Pro is only two months old brought in October and I brought it to finally replace my iMac which I brought in 2014. I brought a Mac Book Pro due to if I ever consider moving away from my hometown in future but that's beside the point.
I went for the MacBook Pro due to it having more storage and memory, and thought it would be great for Blender, however while working on a project and clicking Render, my MacBook began doing the spinning wheel and started making popping, cracking sounds that alarmed me so much I forced it manually to shut down.
I am more careful now but this is a problem since the MacBook is just new and considering replacing it due to warranty, but have any other Blender users encountered this issue?
Title says it all, I recently purchased an M1 Macbook pro from amazon renewed for about 1160 after taxes, and here are the specs, 16gb RAM, 512gb SSD, 8 core CPU, 11 core GPU. The device came with a couple scuffs on the corners and the keyboard looks moderately used. But the biggest part that concerns me is the battery capacity, which is at 89 percent capacity. My question is if it is better to just return it and look at more options, like on Facebook marketplace or Apple Refurbished? I am looking for a pro model for the sake of more ports, I want to get into video editing, ideally light to moderate video editing, schoolwork, and media consumption. Any tips would be greatly appreciated, I may just get an Rog g14 32gb 4070 version new in order to accomplish these things because I am not sure how to use MacOS, but again if anyone can help me with the best options right now that would be great. I would also be interested in a macbook air because of how light and easy it is to carry around, but i would miss the promotion display. Thank you in advance for any advice!
Hi there, my Macbook Air M1 recently broke and I am looking into buying myself a new M4 Pro, however I need the German Layout and I am currently living in New Zealand, so I need to ship it here. Anyone know how much that would cost or if I should wait a few months until I am back?
Hey everyone,
I'm new to MacBooks (just got mine a week ago), and I'm running into some weird issues with my workflow. I'm shooting on a Fujifilm X-H2S in ProRes HQ, 24fps, 6K, and when l import the files to my MacBook, things go wrong:
(QuickTime player and Davinci) 3. When I try to edit the files in DaVinci Resolve, I get a red "media offline" screen after the middle of the video. Here's what l've tried so far: • Installed Pro Video Formats 2.3.2. • Tested different video players like VLC, but the issue persists. • Verified the files on a Windows PC and directly on the camera-it worked perfectly there. • I've used different cables, it doesn't seem to be corrupting the file, apparently there's no problem with the file. • I tried emptying the render cache and that didn't work either.
My system is up to date, Davinci resolves it too. Any ideas on what could be causing this? Is there a setting or step I'm missing as a new Mac user?
Thanks in advance!
Hi, I'm currently using a Lenovo Legion 5 with AMD Ryzen 5 5600H with Radeon graphics and 16gb Ram. Everyday im always maxing out the ram doing heavy browsing and photo editing and its frustrating.
I'm thinking about a Macbook Pro M4 pro chip for my next model.
My Usage: heavy photo editing, and editing 4k videos of 1-5 min for social media and fun primarily.
Will I feel a bottleneck at 24gb? How has your experience been.
I'm not the most tech savvy, how much better would the base Macbook pro M4 pro be compared to what i currently have?
I won't need tis laptop for gaming as I don,t really game anymore and I have the Legion 5 for that if I ever get the desire.
Thanks for the help!
i was recently given a macbook pro with the m4pro chip for work.
in my home setup i have two monitors (1440p 240hz) with spare hdmi slots.
i am planning on getting a tb4 dock so i can connect my two monitors directly into my macbook pro /my other work laptop with one cable from the dock and charge it at the same time.
i haven't found clear advice on this and hoping someone could help me and possibly give me a recommendation on a tb4 dock that would have no trouble doing this and if its possible to do?
i was initially thinking two cables HDMI to thunderbolt into the dock, but have seen in other older posts that it may mirror and not extend? many thanks
Hello,
I'll be finishing up an AA in software development and continuing into a bachelor's in DevOps. I'm looking to get my first MacBook and would like recommendations on specs that yall think are good for long term software and web development. I'm new to the Mac scene and obviously more is better but what is overkill in your opinions?
Mostly will be hooked up at home to external monitors - but I want a macbook for the times I do travel. Looking more for native application development and web development. Probably won't be doing much or any video editing.
2 external screens minimum but 3 is preferred.
What chip, ram, storage specs do you recommend? Open to older M series chips as well
Thank you!
I know....apples and oranges. With military program the MacBook costs about 60 bucks more but has 512 instead of 256. Typically I would leave it sit next to my work computer...but it could travel. I could use the external monitor with the book....
Which one would you get and why if nearly the same price? Portability not a major factor, screen size of 24 would be....I would only get the 14" MacBook.
I have a 4090 egpu and wondering if connecting it to a ROG Ally for $300 would be better performance than a M4 Pro Max laptop? I understand the Pro Max laptops have insane performance. I believe open cl scores with the Ally would be around 175K for Open CL.
First off, I actually figured out a solution I would like to share with you.
Setup:
I have a MacBook Pro M4 Pro base model and Acer Predator X32FP 4k monitor with USB-C. I bought the new Apple's Thunderbolt 5 1m cable to connect the two.
Issue:
The Acer Predator goes up to 160Hz, but when I set it to 160Hz in Settings/Display, the Acer's screen keeps cutting out and going black, sometimes every couple of minutes. I also have a Lenovo Windows laptop and it has no issues whatsoever over the same Thunderbolt 5 cable.
Solution:
When I drop the Acer Predator refresh rate to 120 Hz, the issue is gone.
Hope it helps someone with a similar issue and would like to know if anyone else experienced the same problem. Thanks!
The WiFi itself on each and every device in my house is working proper, only the MacBook Pro 13” (M2) is not allowing me to use any feature or program with internet (safari, settings itself-Apple ID, others), while i tested the internet in the terminal by pinging google and checking my public IP Then i ran an antivirus scan and its clean I tried resetting but can’t because of Apple ID cannot signout without internet(tried every possibility to get it done remotely) Checked the DNS settings, restarted, reset PRAM, SCM like mil times I am completely lost at this point. If anyone knows what’s going on
Edit : it works now i noticed the date and time was wrong the moment i fixed it, it was working.
Hey folks.
My MacBook Pro M1 Pro 16” is pretty broken (doesn’t hold charge and runs pretty slow, when I took it to Apple they said there was some liquid damage to the logic board) and will cost around £1600 to repair through Apple, so I’m going to replace it with the new 14” M4 base model for around the same price.
Ideally I’d like to offset the cost a bit by selling the broken model for spares/repairs, so was wondering if anyone has any ideas what kind of price to set it at? It works fine as a machine but struggles a bit with labour intensive projects (I was using it for music production) and as mentioned doesn’t hold charge.
Thanks in advance!
Would you prefer the MacBook Pro with the larger M4 Pro 48gb RAM and 2tb SSD or the smaller M4 max with 36gb and 1tb? I mainly do video editing and photo editing. Thanks in advance.
I have a 2017 MacBook Air, and dropped a candle on it. All the keys work, but some just barely. I am wondering whether I should take the keys off to try and fix them, or whether I should do some other method (like a hair dryer while I hold the computer upside down so the wax drips out).
I am worried about breaking my keys since it is a butterfly keyboard and quite fragile.
I'm considering buying a pre-owned MacBook Pro with M1 Max (32GB RAM) for computation-heavy tasks and simulations. Here's the full context:
Device Details
Chip: M1 Max (10-core CPU, 24-core or 32-core GPU)
RAM: 32GB unified memory
Condition: Small dent on the corner
Battery health: 87%
Cycle count: 250
Usage
Scientific computing and numerical simulations (large matrix operations, parallel processing).
Occasionally use GPU acceleration for ML/AI and scientific visualization.
Sometimes handle large datasets (RAM capacity could be a factor).
Key Concerns
Battery health (87%) — How big of an issue is this for long-term use?
Small dent on the corner — Cosmetic only, or could it affect internal components?
Future-proofing — Is an M1 Max (2021) still a solid option in 2025?
Price — Is it worth it compared to newer models (like M3/M4 Pro) if I’m prioritizing performance in simulations?
Questions
Is the M1 Max still a good choice for computational workloads and simulations in 2025?
Should I worry about the battery health (87%) and dent on a pre-owned device?
Is the M1 Max GPU (24-32 cores) relevant for computational work (ML, data visualization, etc.)?
If anyone has experience with the M1 Max for similar use cases (scientific computing, simulations, etc.), I’d love to hear your advice!
Between the two specs listed in the title, they are the same price, are the 16" model, and have 1TB storage. Current workloads are 6K 10-bit video in DaVinci and photo editing in Lightroom Classic with resolutions ranging from 20MP, 45MP, and 300MP panoramas. I don't do 3D modeling or anything like that. But I have debated moving up to 8K 12-bit RAW in the near future. What would you do in my position? I'm leaning toward the 24 core GPU 64GB RAM. Anyone in a similar position able to weight in? Thanks in advance!
So I use my iPad as an extra screen with my M3 chip macbook pro.
Unfortunately, any time i play any video (let's say netflix or apple tc) it shows audio only, no video image.
If I disconnect the ipad as an external monitor, it starts working.
