As a big Lupe fan, they’re so similar I feel it has to have inspired Tyler
What's up fellow Lupe Stans (any of you ACTUAL Harvard grads, haha). I had the opportunity to go to the San Diego stop of the Samurai tour and had an absolute BLAST! I did a Vlog for my youtube channel and would really appreciate it if y'all checked it out! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UbO_YWgd1xY&lc=UgwTvGmrHEwoM_Qbt-l4AaABAg
I know some of you were there - I saw some awesome footage of a front row rap-a-thon with the man himself, in stunning 4K, and wanted to add my vids to the mix, as we're all fans!
If you haven't had the opportunity to check him out yet, or are on the fence, I HIGHLY encourage you to make the show.
On the second verse of palaces, I feel like I'm missing the meaning of certain things. Specifically, on these lines:
"Lord, please bless my mansions of cards
If ever challenged, let us camp in the car
Or hang a hammock from a branch in the park
A planet made of uninhabited parts"
I think these lines exude humility, it shows the artist's gratefulness for his life and career. He also explicitly recognizes that there's MORE to life than his career. I think that's because of:
"mansions" not 'mantion', plural not singular, there's more being referred to here than just his professional success. Presumably his family, connections, the experience of life? (Also, I'm going off what's written on Genius. I can't really hear the "s" at the end of "mantion" in the song so this may not be real proof of anything if it's just a mistake)
This is a more concrete reason for my judgement, supported by the next 2 lines. I think the two scenarios of sleeping in cars and parks represent 'rock bottom'. But Lupe pleading the Lord to be left at rock bottom if he loses his career, I think is pretty heavy. It shows resilience, along with humility before God. Asking to hit rock bottom in life rather than lose life. I think this is the strongest evidence to show that Lupe believes there is more to life than a career, within these lines at least.
I just can't fathom what the last line means. What are "parts"? Parts of the planet? Are parts people, souls? Even if I seperate it from this section of the verse, consider it to be part of the "Satellites" allegory for paparazzi, I can't understand it. Neither literally nor symbolically. I'm stumped.
One more thing I have a question about is the use of "us" on the 2nd line. I wouldn't question it if Lupe hadn't used "my" on the first line, but it got me thinking. I think the possibilities are that "us" refers to either Lupe's friends and family, Lupe and Amy Winehouse, or Lupe is pleading to God for his fellow artists.
I think the first option (friends and family) is possible, but it also has less weight.
Amy Winehouse feels plausible. Lupe's "mansion of cards" is his own fortune. It wouldn't do to connect Amy's spirit with materialism. The reason he perceives 'rock bottom' to be Amy's problem as well, is because he won't be in a position to make music, but there's still a hope to continue and funnel Amy's creative energy and allat. That's why he prays to survive and remain resilient even if he hits rock bottom, because he has a responsibility as an artist.
The third one is possible but If it is, it feels strange to 'leave out' the other artists when asking God to bless the "mansions of cards". But then include in his prayer to hope they survive rock bottom? If this is true, I see very little proof for it. Or maybe it just doesn't align with my values.
This is all speculation though, lmk ur thoughts!
Whether it comes to wordplay/double entendres or just lines that have deep meaning to them what are some of your bars by Lupe?
I always imagined Lu would had made She say He say a series, with a follow up track from like the deadbeat dad.
Something called: They say I said.
Where it talks from two perspectives and shows how words can be misinterpreted or twisted. Like how parents line on eachother to make them seem worst to the child, with stuff they actually said. Or the dad trying to defend himself and his reasoning. But us the listener realising how it could of got skewed.
Then it's up to our interpretation to see if he really is a deadbeat dad or not.
Just a random thought I've had a few times.
TLDR - one of my friends can’t go, so I have ONE extra ticket. Looking to get $40.
Considering going to one, but I don’t do well in super intense pits. Was wondering how hard it would be, or if I should just pay extra for balcony.
Long story short...I bought right away and I'm pretty sure the Santa Cruz show wasn't listed yet or I was just too hasty lol
Going to SC is so much easier and we would rather go there. So trying my luck here cause apparently AXS does not actually let you resell tickets until most all normal tickets are sold, which is wack (it says they are "listed" but the public can't see them so effectively useless)
Lower Lodge 2nd row (so very front of 2nd level). Can do $95 each save you a little bit on fees.
I've been a Lupe fan for the past few months, and I've listened to The Cool, Food & Liquor, Tetsuo & Youth, DROGAS WAVE, DRILL MUSIC IN ZION, and Samurai, his latest release. However, the one thing that I don't fully understand in his music is this concept of "the cool". I've heard things about it, but I still can't quite get it. Could someone please explain this? Thanks!
Unfortunately I won't be able to attend any of the concerts, and I figure we should probably hold-off on sharing links to the mixtape (at least publicly) until the tour is over.
But I'm curious about the tracklist(s) on the tape. I've seen people say that it's some Samurai remixes & previously released songs. Though there was an interview where Lupe said that each city's tape would have different songs. No one seems to have posted any specific tracklist yet, so I was thinking we could use this thread to compare it for each city.
If we could get someone to post a tracklist, anyone from other cities can verify if their tape has any differences, and I'll track the differences in the OP. Or perhaps there aren't any differences so far, but we can still keep track of things just in case alterations are coming later (like maybe he'll do something special for Chicago).
Hi all, I went to the Boston Oct 6 show and got a mixtape but haven’t gotten the email yet. Just wondering if this is true for others as well and if there’s anything I can do to obtain it if not. Thanks!
I’m located in MN and have been to three Lupe shows in the past…however, this time he isn’t coming too close to anywhere MN.
Is there a way to get this mixtape legit if I can’t make it to a show? I’d buy some of the samurai merch online if it was possible to get it that way.
Thanks Lu Reddit and hopefully LupeTheKiller
I'm determined to get my hands on that exclusive mixtape. But before I get ready to camp out the venue, can anyone with it tell me about it? I'm curious to know what I'm so desperately after.
Has anyone on here listened to the tape released at the start of the samurai tour yet? If so, how is it?
Y'all probably know that I posted what I thought could possibly be the 2003/04 Arista version of "Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor". I was a fan of the version that leaked (I'll edit that out, if necessary) so when I found out that there's a completely different version of it, I been interested since. Tryna find something that could help me piece together the album. From samplers, to interviews to even speaking to DJ Marbll himself.
So the dream itself. I was in Lupe's crib for whatever reason. Somehow me and him were super cool and just kicking it. So then outta nowhere I ask him, "Yo. What's up with that Arista version of Food & Liquor?" He starts laughing and asks me, "Yo, how you know about that?" and I just shrugged. So then he's like "Alright. Give me a minute."
He comes back with this box. He's like here you go. I open it and I just see a bunch of CDs and old pics from that time period. And I recognized one pic which may have been the album cover. Because if you look at "The Future" cover, he wore some other shirt, a hoodie over it and a 1st & 15th chain. Somehow I remembered that. But the pic itself was taken at a different angle. Which made me think, yeah this may be the album cover.
I then go through a few CDs. I remember going through a Three 6 Mafia Beat CD and thinking to myself, "I need to cop a USB CD Drive now." Then I see a blank CD and next to it I saw some note. And I thought, "Could this be the tracklist?" I saw it go from 1 to 14 but couldn't make out what those 14 songs were.
And before I got the opportunity to really look at it, I woke up. And I was livid to say the least because I didn't get to see it, I woke up before my alarm and I knew I had to write an exam today.
Now, this isn't the first time this type of thing has happened either. In 2020, I remember having a dream where my dad said he had this unreleased Jay-Z song called "95 South". How he got it? I don't know. But as he's about to press play I woke up.
I don't know why this happens. I thought that 95 South situation was a one time thing. Oh well, here y'all go.
Hey guys I’m new to this reddit, but I just had a few questions. So I’m taking my gf to see Lupe in Pomona. Lupe’s been her favorite artist and childhood artist her whole life. She’s super excited and I really want her to have the best experience and be up close singing to him cuz she knows every lyric. I wanted to know what time to show up to be at the front? I know doors open at 7 so I was like maybe it’s best to show up at 6 or 6:30 to be there and ready so we can be at the front? Please let me know if anyone else has came early to wait for the front. Also does anyone have the set-list? Will it be only songs from Samuri or some off his other albums? Thank you!
Just wanted to share my experience at the Denver, Colorado show. Flew in from Houston to experience my first Lupe concert. A lot of memorable moments and wanted to share a bit.
For those attending the Samurai Tour. I lined up at 6:30pm, probably 15-20th person in line. I did buy the fast pass ahead of time so at 7pm when they called for it I was 8th person in line.
Got two hats and two white shirts and total was $160, so yes I got the mixtape after I paid up.
3 opening acts and Lupe was on stage little after 10pm and last song ended right at midnight.
Thank you so much to Lupe for an amazing performance. To the fans I interacted with, everyone was extremely cool!
Does anyone by chance have video of the fan appreciation if so would you be willing to send it to me! Thanks Marc.
