Is there a reason so many people will not allow pets in their rentals? LA and SF seem to be very pet friendly places except for people who want to rent homes.
Similarly, what’s with renting caveats? Listing a house with no access to one bedroom? So many furnished and short term rentals, but what about the people that want to rent long term and furnish their own home? I’ve never had a harder time finding a place, not for lack of options but because so many homes have all these “but no ___” statements. Sorry for the rant, most people know the market is sparse but rentals like these are what make it even worse.
Hi,
I have been trying to apply for two positions over the past few days, but I am unable to get through the resume submission portion. I attached my resume in both PDF and Word formats, filled in the vacancy and file type fields, but the page gets stuck loading and occasionally errors out. I have tried using different browsers without success.
I have also messaged their LinkedIn page and am waiting for a response. Has anyone else encountered this issue? If so, how did you resolve it?
Thanks!
My skis need a tune up. Does anyone have any recommendations? It seems like there's nowhere in town. Do you recommend Santa Fe?
Hello, just moved here recently and am wondering if Los Alamos has its own basketball rec league or a pick up scene
I’m interested in applying to a math internship at LANL but I’m unsure if they offer these to undergraduate students. Has anyone here done a math internship with the lab and what is it like? Where can you apply? Thank you!
Hi all,
I am considering a move to Los Alamos for work. I run in the morning before work. Sometimes this is in the dark depending on the time of year. Does anyone else in town do this and not have problems with wildlife (mainly mountain lion and bear)? I am currently able to trail run most mornings where I currently live and since it is closer to a city I don't worry about the wildlife.
The area looks great though and I would be very excited about this move! I prioritize access to the outdoors for running and camping. Los Alamos seems to fit that bill.
Thanks for the input!
Does anyone have any recommendations for hiking trails without sheer dropoffs?
I'm not great with heights and I get freaked out by narrow trails with a steep dropoff on the side, especially when the trails are snowy/icy. I'm pretty fit otherwise, and I can handle strenuous hikes. TIA!
I sent in an application for the physics undergrad internship for the summer. I didn’t see an area to submit my transcript + cover letter so I thought that would be submitted a different way. I emailed them just in case but should I upload them onto my account? I’m worried they won’t consider the application if they don’t see the material attached on it
The County Council meeting Tuesday night got spicy when the County Manager proposed spending $9.85M (nearly 2x assessed value) on three properties by Diamond/Sandia, right across from Los Alamos High School where Morning Glory used to be. The owner apparently wants to build a car wash if the County doesn't buy.
**Key points:**
- County says it could be used for Social Services Hub + housing/retail
- Business owners absolutely livid about price and rushed timeline
- Fascinating debate about whether private or public development better serves community needs
- Surprise hot mic moment contradicting legal claims made during meeting
**Some representative quotes from the contentious meeting:**
"Things sit vacant and depreciate and look like crap, which just feeds into more people being upset about what it's like to live here or think about moving here" - Councilor Havemann
"You shouldn't be held hostage by anyone, for any amount of money, into making a decision that the community hasn't had a chance to weigh in on" - Aaron Walker

Interested in applying to LANL. I have a history of depression. I am currently taking SSRI’s and had a voluntary hospital stay in the past. Is it likely I will be denied for human reliability program (HRP)?
How long did it take you to hear back after your final interview? I had my final interview this Monday for an analyst role, and the interviewer mentioned they would be making a decision this week. I haven’t heard back from anyone yet and was wondering how long it took for you to receive an offer or a rejection.
Can anyone recommend some good books about the lab? Ideally covering more than just the Manhattan project timeframe. I'm curious to learn more about all eras of the lab, it's research, impacts and cultural/national impact. I know we have a historian, for anyone who's read his stuff how dry is it? I'm not necessarily trying to do more research about work in my free time 😂 Would like to learn some of the stories though
PSA from LANL (via us, local media):
Loud noises may be heard in Los Alamos and surrounding communities Nov. 19-21
On Tuesday, Nov. 19 through Thursday, Nov. 21, Los Alamos National Laboratory will conduct mission-critical experiments during the day that may result in loud noises being heard on and off Lab property. Please be advised that these noises are expected and are not a threat to public safety. (Dates are subject to change; the public will be notified if that happens.)
The Laboratory conducts a wide range of dynamic experiments using high explosives, carrying out several hundred experiments annually. Some experiments are large enough to be heard off-site. Prior to each experiment, the Lab carefully evaluates atmospheric conditions to minimize off-site noise impacts. All experiments follow strict regulations, prioritizing safety, security and environmental stewardship.
Hi everyone,
I was curious if postdoc salaries at LANL are negotiable. I understand that the official website outlines a standard salary structure based on the year of Ph.D. completion, but I wanted to know if there’s any flexibility in this regard.
Thank you!
Long story short. I moved here from TN after family friends rescued me from homelessness. I was homeless because I lost my job and couldn’t pay rent at my apartment so ended up getting evicted (this was in February of this year). They have been very generous to me and I’m in no danger of losing my place in their home any time soon. However, I know it’s not ideal for me to stay here forever.
Does anyone know of any apartments that accept tenants with evictions, either here or in Santa Fe? Or even after a certain number of years? I can wait awhile but it concerns me to think I may never be able to rent again.
Hello, I was curious if anyone had much idea for someone moving back to LA from being in the Military with a family. I am currently an aviation mechanic for the Navy. Im mostly trying to figure out jobs or where my skills are beneficial. Either with LANL, the Fire Department, or the Police Department. Also how is the housing there? Also, if anyone knows about skill bridge with the Lab Thank you
Is Amazon now charging everyone in Los Alamos for returning packages to UPEX? It seems only UPS drop-offs at their Santa Fe location are free.
Previously, returning through UPEX was free as long as we packed and labeled the items ourselves. However, it looks like we now have to pay even for that. Can anyone confirm?
I am an undergraduate and applied for a summer internship position at LANL about a month ago. I went to check on the status of my application, but I am completely unable to login to my portal. It says I need a PIV or zToken, or CRYPTOCard or YubiKey? When I created my account when I applied I could log in and out with ease. What should I do?
Any foragers here? Groups? I'd love to connect in with other foragers.
Why is it so hard to get a medical appointment in Los Alamos? It's a statewide problem: we're the only state that lost physicians while the rest of the US gained 44,000+
Dr. Bratton's guest essay for Boomtown breaks down the crisis and potential solutions: https://www.boomtownlosalamos.org/p/no-available-appointments-whats-going
LANL used to have really good rental car discounts for personal (leisure) use. Has anyone noticed these not being as useful recently. I could get a rental car anywhere, at anytime for <$50 a day, usually ~$30 per day. Now it’s typically $60-$80.
Ones that assume you're smart enough to have a medical conversation, and treat you right?
I need a PCP, and a dentist. Maybe ophthalmologist. The rest I can go to Santa Fe for. Honestly, I'd go to SF, for any good doctor, if there's not one in town you'd recommend.
Hello, I have actively started applying for jobs and postdocs. My question is that do LANL people hire from their inner circle or through their connections. Or the hiring is pretty fair e.g. they also evaluate external candidates who don’t have any connections to LANL.
I moved here from Clarksville TN 2 weeks ago to live with family friends. I have experience in hospital food service and housekeeping (no college degrees). I know the hospital in Clarksville had a lot of entry level clerk technician positions, which is what I really wanted. I did not see any jobs like that here, and the only food service position I found was PRN. I applied anyway, called to follow up but they never contacted me. I also applied for a registration position but I know it’s unlikely I’ll be considered because I don’t have that type of experience.
Does anyone here work there or know if they will have any entry level positions opening soon? It has to be the hospital here in town because I don’t have a car.
Specifically, science related teams. Are you concerned about reduction in funding or headcount? Especially with the newly announced DOGE?
We analyzed the County's Climate Action Plan before tomorrow's (Tuesday 11/12) Council vote. Key points relevant to our community:

What do you think of the plan going before Council? Are you happy with where it's headed? Do you want more? Less? We always want to hear from you.
Are there deer and other wildlife bopping around Whiterock, or just LA proper?
I desperately need to get my (27F, white) very long, thick (not curly) hair cut—probably in the ballpark of 6” off. I’ve been burned many times and typically go back home (out of state) to the girl I trust but that isn’t feasible to keep up forever. I’m hoping someone here can point me in the direction of someone who can help me out. Of course happy to share your name in a referral if that’s helpful! I’d be willing to drive to Santa Fe or Albuquerque.
Looking to avoid someone who just cuts a straight line across, leaving it bulky and blunt. Preferably layers and shape (also strongly considering going back to full blonde from medium brown soon so that could be on the table in the future but doesn’t have to be the same person for both). Thanks in advance!
As much as I love the snow, I'm going stir crazy sitting indoors. Are there any trails nearby that might be a pleasant hike this weekend? I'm okay to drive an hour or so
Hey y'all! I'm curious about the trails around town. I'm in a wheelchair, but I have a great electric attachment. It can go most places, but if it's too steep, it can't make it. Are there any relatively flat trails?
I'm going to be trying to learn all the local flora and fauna possible. (any foragers here?) I've already looked through iNaturalist and I'm excited by all the new to me things to learn.
Tips, places, groups, meetups, websites etc welcome! TIA
