Elk Ridge residents left in limbo - with some houses sitting on top of gas lines

Just published a story that I think you all might find interesting (and concerning).

https://www.boomtownlosalamos.org/p/elk-ridge-residents-demand-answers

Elk Ridge, that mobile home park out by the Lab, is facing some serious issues:

  • Yes! Communities (the park owner) suddenly announced they're switching all homes from natural gas to propane
  • Residents have received almost no information about timing, costs, or logistics
  • Gas lines were discovered running under some homes, raising safety concerns
  • The landlord has been largely unresponsive to residents' questions and concerns

This situation shows how vulnerable mobile home residents are, especially when dealing with unresponsive management. Many residents are worried about potential costs, safety issues, and even the possibility of losing heat as winter approaches. The County and NNSA say they have limited ability to intervene. (The natural gas is metered on the Lab side of things — it's a jurisdictional mess, like so many things up here.)

What are your thoughts? Do any of you have experience with Elk Ridge or similar situations? What do you think the county or state could do to protect residents in these cases?

Is it hard to get an admin position at LANL?

I am trying so hard to apply at Los Alamos National Laboratory for administrative assistant positions but it seems almost impossible. I’ve applied for 3 different ones and haven’t heard anything. Not even rejections. 😂 Is the fact that I only have an associates degree killing my shot?

I'm running for County Council. AMA.

https://preview.redd.it/r5rz45zpl5sd1.jpg?width=3264&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=27ac0ceecd6d15c93b5c856ec2960a9c1e745c80

Hi all,

I'm running for Council again. In 2022, I got 3500 of the 5000 votes needed to win, which was pretty good for a third-party candidate in a community that's about 40% D and 30% R. I'm hoping to convince 1500 more to vote for me this time. Early voting starts next week on Tuesday, Oct. 7. You can register in person when you vote at the Municipal Building, 1000 Central Ave. You can vote for up to 3 Councilors; they don't all have to be the same party. You can also find more info at nmvote.org.

So why should you vote for me?

I'm motivated to address the housing shortage. I struggled with housing when I came to Los Alamos in 2013 as a post-Masters student, but I recognize that it's gotten worse, especially after COVID-19. Because of this, I struggle to retain talented scientists on my team, eroding the community's scientific culture. I've researched housing policy extensively over the past few years and think that aggressive zoning and permitting reforms, which make it easier to build, and land value tax reforms would be the most effective strategies to encourage development and discourage stagnation. I also recognize it's a divisive issue between homeowners and home buyers, and I support alternatives like telecommuting, commuter shuttles, and microtransit systems that allow people to commute safely.

I've also experienced the challenges of starting and running small businesses in Los Alamos and the frustrations of promising entrepreneurs leaving. We should push back on unnecessary bureaucracy and government that competes with the private sector and increase transparency and efficiency in the business permitting process.

Last but not least, we should have greater government transparency. Data should be more accessible so the public can be more informed in decision-making processes. We should hold our County leadership accountable to be more responsive to the community's interests. I've had two years of experience serving on County boards. As Parks & Recreation Chair, I fought relentlessly to establish citizen working groups after the County surreptitiously dismantled citizen subcommittees. I also serve on several local community boards and volunteer groups and have good relationships with county staff members, community leaders, and people across the political spectrum to get things done.

I hope that gives you an idea of who I am and what I stand for and that I'm not just all talk, but please ask me anything. Don't forget early voting starts Oct. 7. I'm also hosting a meet & greet and free screening of 1984 - George Orwell's cautionary tale on authoritarianism, surveillance, and propaganda - at SALA this Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 6:00 PM. Any Medical Clinics on the Hill that Prescribe Semaglutide (GLP-1)?

Does anyone know of a doctor or medical clinic that prescribes semaglutide treatments, like Wegovy or Ozempic? Thanks in advance!

Article about recent lab commute traffic deaths

This was posted in the Santa Fe sub but it seems extremely relevant to this community also. I hadn't heard any report about how these accidents occured.
FYI that they discuss how the accidents happened for anyone who might want to avoid such material.

Chess meetup

There is a chess meetup in Los Alamos on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 to 7:30 pm.

Usually it's in one of the second floor community rooms at the Mesa branch of the Los Alamos library at 2400 Central. The next meeting is on September 24th.

Occasionally, someone reserves the room we usually use. This is the the case on October 1st. So, we will instead meet at the White Rock branch community room, which is off to the right of the foyer as you enter the building. The White Rock branch is at 10 Sherwood (across from Rigobertos and Smiths).

We will be back at the Mesa branch on October 8th.

Looking to jam

Hello. I'm (24M) somewhat new to Los Alamos. I don't really have anything to do. I'm a singer and guitarist and would love some people to play with. I really like Vocal Jazz but am open to play whatever. Please reach out if you are looking for someone to jam with.

Thank you.

Phone Interview Expectations

I scheduled a phone interview for this Friday, and I’m hoping to get some insight or advice on what to expect. It’s for an entry-level, post-bachelor’s position, so I’m curious about what questions to expect and how in-depth the interview might go.

Also, what should I expect after the phone interview? Is an in-person interview typically the next step, and if so, would travel be covered since I live out of state?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

LANL clearance question

Does LANL do adjudication locally or is it done via DOE ABQ? If it is local, what group does them? I am thinking about taking a job at LANL and would have to get a clearance. Just curious as to the process.

Opportunity Timeline

Hi guys!

I was told LANL at some point during the year had a lot of jobs put out kind of like a “Hiring Surge”. My friend interviewed for 4 jobs within a a few months, got one offer.

What months does this usually happen? (If it does)

Could have been an anomaly but I don’t want to miss the chance! (I’m in early IT)

HSA Changes

What are others doing with respect to the changes to in the LANL-contracted HSA brokerage accounts? In 9 days the HSA provider will pull all cash from the formerly contracted brokerages and require any new investments to be with the HSA provider’s new brokerage that also has new fees without a cash minimum. The HSA provider has a 1.1 star review average with the BBB and. 1.1 star review rating with Yelp. Thus I’m not sure I want to be subject to their fees or choices in what I should invest my HSA dollars in. Any advice would be great!

Things to do in town or near besides hiking and museums downtown.

Hi I've only been here a couple months and have my first group of friends coming to visit from out of state at the end of September. I'm trying to think of things for us all to do while they're here. I've been to the history museum and Bradberry. We will also be doing a ton of hiking which I've gotten very familiar with here already. What other things can we do that is closer than Santa Fe( they are hitting Santa Fe while heading home). I'm thinking maybe Jemez Springs and Bandelier, but I haven't been before.

Local Banks for Savings Account?

My fiancé is in the process of converting to a scientist at LANL, so he and I are starting to realistically prepare to purchase a house. We current have separate finances and separate banks - neither of which are local - so we want to open a joint savings account to save up for a down-payment on a house.

Based on friends' experiences with buying homes in Los Alamos (i.e., we have witnessed friends rushing down to Albuquerque in the middle of the day to get a same-day cashiers check to secure the purchase of their home amidst heavy competition), we know we want to open this account with a local bank. We also know that not all local banks offer online banking; we would really like to be able to manage our account online!

Does anyone have any insights/recommendations that may help us make the best choice? Thanks in advance!!

LANL App Q - Cover Letter

Many job postings at LANL have minimum requirements in the form of paragraphs. The LANL cover letter format recommends copy and pasting directly from the job postings.

Do they seriously want the complete paragraph from the job posting pasted into the letter? That alone would make some cover letters start at like two pages without even showing how you met the requirements.

I would assume they just want the title of each minimum requirement section, but with how prescriptive they are, I’m uncertain.

Applying to LANL - virtual info session?

I’ve applied to a few jobs at the lab and signed up for their talent mailing list a month or so ago. Just got an email today about a virtual info session — is this something that’s sent out to everyone on the email list? I’m wondering if it would help speed up the application review process

Thought I got the job, now I'm not so sure.

I applied for an R&D position in May. Did an interview in June. Was informed by hiring manager in mid-late July that they wanted to hire me, just needed to provide 3 references before sending info to HR. Contacted hiring manager early August and was told they would contact the references soon but was busy. It's been a month and it's been radio silence.

I know it's a slow process at the lab, but should I keep waiting, contact HR, or apply for other jobs?

Update from HM: The Global Security Directorate has decided to temporarily pause hiring in the department. However, it is unknown how long it will be. The HM expressed interest to hire me when they resume the hiring process, but it is unknown how long it will be.

Plz drive safe

Because 9hr days are long enough without having the only (feasible) road out blocked by an accident.

[[9/8 edit after Friday's fatal crash of a beloved former director: Plz drive safe --- because life is short enough without being killed in a fatal commute-induced collision.

Moral of the story: there are dozens of reasons to stop driving like entitled pricks. ]]

Anyone playing tennis?

Hello, I am visiting LA for a few months, and I really want to play tennis. But I don't know anyone here. So if anyone wants to play, hit me up. I am kind of beginner- intermediate (utr4.5)

Also looking to make a few friends. So if anyone likes hiking/volleyball/board games/trivia, would be up for that too. Are there any other places I can ask, like Facebook groups or something?

How to meet people?

Book clubs, run clubs, volunteering?

I don't think I've talked to anyone outside of my workplace for like a month. I've always considered myself an introvert, but this is getting a bit out of hand.

Best time to shop at Smith's? If it even exists...

The Smith's looks good on paper, but every time I go, things are out of stock. It's like they haven't recovered from pandemic supply chain issues (that everyone else seem to bounce back from in 2021). Produce is picked clean, 1 human cashier, a line for self checkout that stretches to the middle aisle, and why is the vanilla coffeemate always out of stock?

Is there a day or time where it's relatively stocked after deliveries arrive? I hit the coop and Natural Grocers too, but there are some thing we can only get at Smith's.

Los Alamos Medical Center work culture

Hi everyone!

My spouse works at LANL, and we are looking at moving to Los Alamos. I work at an RN in Santa Fe and would like to find a job in Los Alamos so I don’t have to make the same commute that my spouse does (one reason why we want to move).

What is the work culture like at Los Alamos Medical Center for nurses? I have background in ER and being an Army medic, but I’m looking for a clinic job preferably. From the job searches I have done, it looks like the medical center is only has bedside nursing jobs listed on their website right now. I am willing to work bedside if I know that I won’t be stepping into a toxic work environment. Any insight would be appreciated!

Los Alamos Atomicon 2024

Next week the public library is hosting our third Los Alamos Atomicon. This event started from the tiny seed of love of graphic novels and appreciation for their creators. It's Saturday August 31 from 10-5 pm at Mesa Public Library and Fuller Lodge. Atomicon celebrates comics, gaming, fantasy, superhero pop culture in movies and comics, science fiction, art, creativity, and fan culture including cosplay from so many fandoms.

You can decolonize your gaming with creators Weckiai Rennila and Weyodi Old Bear. The 10 session still has 8 seats and the 2 pm session has 4 seats left. Samizdat Bookstore and Teahouse is doing a popup bookstore. Other vendors at Fuller Lodge are John Sumrow, Roybal Ranch Signage, 7000 BC, Ivy Rose, Jacob Spill, Demian Anderson, Desert 0wl Sewing, Jazdia's Jewelry, and more.

The third floor of the library has presentations and discussions while the lower level has local collaborators like STEAM Lab, artists doing caricatures, and crafts and activities for both kids and adults. There's a life drawing session and several ways to enter the costume contest.

Like any con, there's no way to do everything, so we have a program schedule with three suggested tracks. You'll be able to see it on the calendar listing late Monday afternoon.

Below is the link to the library calendar. That entry includes links to the Coyote & Crow gaming sessions or you can find them on the calendar. "At Fuller Lodge, you'll also have a chance to experience the fully-immersive world of Coyote & Crow, where Jeopardy champ and gamemaster Weckiai Rennila will lead a full walk through of the game for registered players at 10:00am and again at 2:00pm.'

The event and programming are free but you'll want to buy things from the vendors, some of whom are Atomicon exclusives. Free cotton candy and popcorn but no food booths or trucks, at least not this year.
