What is taking IG Studio so long?

When watching LOGH, I asked myself: How could such an advanced, interstellar society revert to Totalitarianism?! How could such a people be so advanced in Science but not advanced in thinking?

So far I've followed the remade version and considering watching the original, but would want to start around where the remade version is currently at if possible
