I bought a small piece of leather to make a strap (a soft, smooth piece of lambskin) and in the back there is an old crusty sticker that had some identifying details written on it. What is the best way to safely remove this? It’s stuck to the suede side and has resisted my attempts to pick it off…
What brand and what grits of sanding are you using? Also, if anyone has a link to a good YouTube "how to" that would be swell... thanks!
I just bought a 1 tonne arbor press, and a brass imprinting tool to put a makers mark on my leather.
I've watched videos of people using one and they seem to be putting very little pressure on, to make a really good mark.
I am having to bounce all of my strength and weight to get some kind of an imprint, which makes me think I'm doing something very wrong. (I'm testing on a piece of standard veg-tan, so I'm pretty sure its not the leather's fault.)
Does anyone have any advice?
Literally had my equipment arrive today. I tried to wet it to make an impression, but the water just stands on top of the material instead of soaking into it. I’m trying to apply the water to the “shiny” (non-fuzzy) side.
Is there some sort of prep step that I’m missing? All of the videos I’ve seen on the subject just go straight to wetting the leather.
What's the difference between the two . I can afford the Weaver clicker I just don't want to over pay if the BG clicker is essentially the same tool .
Does anyone have any ideas of small leather projects that kids could complete? The kids are 9 and 11 years old
I’m diving slowly into leathercraft.
Where can I buy leather pieces in Germany. Looking for cut pieces first as I am still learning
Hey! I am researching the topic of working with leather (cuz I am new to it) and collecting answers from people who have experience in working with it. Please feel free to share your experience, it's anonymous.
Questions:
- What is your connection to leather work: ss it a business, a hobby or something else?
- Do you develop patterns yourself or look them up online?
- What products do you have experience making?
- What percentage of material do you turn into a finished product? Can you estimate the waste of leather even after you try to squeeze in the details as close as possible?
- If you have any cutoffs, what do you do with them if anything?
It's a great finish, but damn does it smear my intricate dyework on tooling all over the place. I wish there was some way to do a light seal of the color before resolene is applied.
I've thought about doing a super light spray of saddlelac, then topping with resolene - anyone try this? Concern is that it wouldnt adhere properly.
Please give me tips for this issue. I often do complex Sheridan with dark background and I gotta figure this out
Actually, It could work, if attached to some upside down T-shape piece of wood.
I went to a class and made this the other day. I couldn’t believe how relaxing it was to make. I know it looks rough, and for some reason really flattened out/looks like a truck ran it over, but I had a lot of fun making it! I’m going to attempt a wallet project next!
Hey new to the hobby so two questions.
The leather I got is really soft, and I am having trouble beveling it. Any advice?
What does stitching do? Is it layering leather together to make it thicker or is it just decorative?
Hello! I'm just getting started with leather crafting, and I'm especially interested in making keychains and ornaments.
For my first project, I want to recreate this swan ornament (picture attached), but I'm not sure what tools and techniques I'll need. I'm particularly curious about how to create the details on the wings(visible on the black swan)—there's an imprint effect, and the leather is shaped to look like real feathers.
If anyone has recommendations on tools or methods for achieving this, I'd love to hear them! Thanks in advance!
So I have been saving up and want to upgrade my tools. I am not sure what to get. I known what tools I am looking to upgrade. My mallet, edge bevelers, and cutting tools. I am also looking for a pen knife that can cut leather like 5 Oz really well. Any suggestions would be great.
Don't know why I chose this model, because it's not easy at all, but I think it will look good on the bag I'm working.
Been getting into viking/Nordic style patterns lately, decided to make this for my dresser, picked up a little iron picture stand at Hobby Lobby for it
I have a few leather working tools and a large piece of leather, I guess a quarter of a cow. Any suggestions? What is leather meant to be used for?
