Look for names of markets / stores in the area noted that are similar to Nature’s Fare in the Okanagan. Is the produce at The Stoke in Kimberley organic? Has any one see organic beef bones for broth making around?
Thanks in advance for sharing!
I noticed the locals can be quite nasty to tourists and newcomers especially from Alberta. Do you know why? Doesn’t the local economy need their tourist dollars? Thx
anyone in the area noticing way more rats these last couple of years? we’ve recently caught 5 in 3 weeks and previously we only had the occasional packrat here and there, now it seems like there’s tons and tons of the skin tailed rats, way more then i’ve ever seen in my 23 years in the area, we live near castlegar
Visiting the elk valley area for a bit. Staying in my car. Looking to see where it would be okay for me to park. Cheers
I’m looking for Dental clinic suggestions! Nelson, Castlegar, or Trail. Doesn’t matter. I’m looking for the clinic with the newest and best technology! Any suggestions would be great!
With Greyhound gone, there are limited options of traveling east of BC from Trail.
If you notice on the Pacific Coast Airlines schedule for December, flights are cheaper to Vancouver (half the regular price). I suspect this is due to more travelers during Christmas holidays.
If you would like this changed in the future, send your feed back here:
Would you travel to, say Alberta, if the option was available from Pacific Coast Airlines?
Hi everyone. Planning the annual trip to the region (early Feb), thinking of going to Nelson/Whitewater for the first time. Heard great things.
The detour would involve a 3.5 hour drive from Nelson to Revelstoke. I'd like to do it in one go. How treacherous would you say the route is? Is it drivable in darkness, or should I aim to pull into Revy by sundown?
I'm an adept winter driver and will have a 4WD vehicle with winters, but I appropriately respect (fear) BC highways, especially on a first attempt.
Thanks for reading and for your advice.
I (37F) am a recovering Calgarian who has lived in Montana for the past 15 years (I’m a duel citizen). Well, I don’t know if you’ve heard, but it’s getting a little intense down here and I kinda want to bail/ return to the homeland.
I have a graduate degree in social work and have been in the medical social work field for 12 years. Is Interior Health the employer I should look to for jobs? What community/town with a medical clinic would you recommend where I (as a single person with 2 big labs) could afford housing?
I like small town living so rural doesn’t bother me (my current town is 5000 people), and I am in the woods/mountains in all my free time so I would want to have lots of outdoor recreation.
Any suggestions? Any tips before I quit my job, pack up my life, sell my house and escape?
Hey all! So I've been living with a shared driveway, both homes owned separately with the driveway running down the property line. For the last 10 years, we have been repairing, plowing, and maintaining it ourselves as the other owner is in their 70's. But. She now has a boarder that harasses and annoys us persistently. Swearing, calling out, flashing flashlights in our window. We ignore him, but do not want to plow that side anymore as it could be considered trespassing and we don't need the bullshit. Anybody else have this problem, and how would you handle it?
One of my husbands friends has relocated to nelson bc and has been staying with family. She is still trying to find a rental, and says its really hard, i refuse to believe its truly THAT hard to find a place for one woman and her cat. Says she looks daily for unfurnished pet friendly rentals in nelson, trail, castlegar, salmo, ymir, fruitvale, and montrose. That sounds like a lot of places. Is the market really that crazy out there? My husband called me ignorant, but i still think this sounds nuts
Have applied for a job at the Ski resort. I'd be relocating from Kelowna and I've skied at Big White my whole life. How easy is it to find housing, public transit, friends, etc. I also do not own a vehicle yet/have my license due to personal reasons(being too busy with school).

This maybe a boring city to live in but hey it has it's uniqueness.
Hello everyone,
We are in the West Kootenays, Arrow-Slocan region to be specific. Hoping to get married summer of 2026.
We are lucky enough to have beautiful properties in the family that we can use as a venue, saving us money and providing scenic backdrops. This of course comes with some challenges, including that there are no indoor spaces on the properties sufficient for the amount of people present.
Our biggest concern is the wildfire smoke issue. We are concerned for our guests health in the event of heavy smoke, the scenic locations not appearing in the photos due to thick smoke, and of course if folks travelling potentially hit road closures if fires get really bad.
I am hoping to ask if people have any input on what’s a safer bet, at least to start planning around. We are considering mid-late June or mid-late August, with a preference for sometime in August. We have one couple of friends who’d be travelling from Europe, so it would be nice to give them as much notice as possible. Of course paying attention to next wildfire season may change this, and 2026’s fire season will deliver the ultimate verdict.
Does anyone have advice on what they’d chose as a “working date/working time period” at this point?
Thanks so much!
Hi everyone, my partner and I are looking to move back to the Kootenays and are torn between Invermere and Fernie. We know Invermere is more realistic for buying a house, but we’re open to living in Sparwood just outside Fernie b/c it seems more affordable.
We’re in our early 30s and looking to start a family soon. Invermere seems to be more of a place where young families live versus Fernie being more of a “ski town” but pls correct me if I’m wrong in that. Would love to hear from anyone who has a family and lives in Fernie.
We work virtually so no concerns about employment. We love the outdoors and are also really looking for a place where we can easily meet people and build community.
Any info/opinions are appreciated!
My wife & I are planning to visit the Kootenays between Boxing Day and New Years as a scouting mission to decide on a town/city we’d like to relocate to.
We’re contemplating Invermere/Panorama, Kimberley, and Rossland/Warfield/Trail. Access to outdoor activities, be it lakes, hiking, biking, camping, skiing, are the driving factor and don’t think we can go wrong with either. 3 kids under 12 so schools are important, too. First off, any major pros or cons to these areas?
Plan could be something like fly in to Calgary and drive to Invermere (stay the night) then to Kimberley (stay the night) then to Rossland/Trail (stay the night) and then drive to Kelowna (stay the night) to fly home. Second question, are we crazy to have this aggressive of a driving plan over the holidays? Could the driving be treacherous that time of year? We’re truly just looking for a vibe to then hone in on for the real estate searches so we can totally take our time with the driving. Coming from Ontario so winter driving isn’t foreign to me and I’ve white knuckled it on more than a few occasions. But also appreciate the differences the Rockies could bring.
TIA!
EDIT: after all the feedback & recos (thanks to all!) we’ve decided to skip the Dec scouting mission and plan to travel in March, with the kids, to see the area and some houses on the market in one-go.
Hey everyone! I'm 23 yr old kiwi here trying to decide where to work this winter. Spent last season at Big White which was awesome but looking for something a little quieter and a more 'authentic winter experience"...less aussies. Tossing up between Rossland and Nelson at the moment as places to live and work on the mountain, spent a day at each mountain last season and thought Red was better! but Nelson is a bigger town. Thoughts would be appreciated. Cheers Scott
Hi all --
I am a PhD candidate at UBC's School of Nursing and am conducting this research as a part of my dissertation. We are interested in understanding more about the way that we talk about contraceptives and how that might impact contraceptive care. At this time, we are recruiting cisgender women and people who can get pregnant to participate in arts-based research to discuss their experiences with controlling their fertility and/or contraceptive care. Participants will be asked to create a collage related to contraceptive care and experiences which will then guide a one on one virtual interview. Supplies for the collage can be mailed. An honorarium is provided. We are particularly interested in hearing experiences from those in more rural areas of BC, like y'all in the Kootenay region.
Please see the attached poster for more information regarding inclusion criteria and what to do if you are interested. If you have any further questions, please contact me at kermar@student.ubc.ca
Please note: We are also recruiting health care providers that currently prescribe contraceptives in British Columbia. If you are interested in participating as a health care provider, please see the following link.
Pend Oreille River. About 20 mins from Nelway border crossing this morning.
Excited to be heading to Castlegar for a day of work! I won’t have much time on the way there, but I’d love your recommendations for my drive back.
I'm interested in short hikes, bakeries, thrift stores, and restaurants.
So far, I have Deadwood Junction in Greenwood on my list. Any other suggestions? Thank you!
Driving route: Castlegar > Christina Lake > Grand Forks > Greenwood > Rock Creek > Beaverdell > Kelowna
My husband and I are looking into relocating to the area (north of Kaslo). After over a decade in dusty California we're ready to come home.
I have questions regarding climate change - specifically things to look out for or consider. I'm looking things up online as best as I can, and friends in BC are all on the coast/island so I thought I'd try here incase theres some elephant in the room nobody's telling us.
Hello,
My girlfriend and I are both teachers and are planning on moving to Rossland in September. We are curious if there is much work first TTOC’s or contracts that become available for sd20. If anyone has info on this we would really appreciate it! Also if you have any tips regarding finding a place to rent in Rossland or tips for teachers please send them our way!
I live in Kimberley, BC, where I've attempted to run a local area blog for the past handful of years, and this year I decided to put together a post about why the most important vote to make in this upcoming BC Election is "NOT Conservatives".
If interested, you can read it over on substack: https://mountown.substack.com/p/nobody-vote-bc-conservatives
For what it's worth, I don't make a case for who people should vote for, as I think the most important vote in this election is who people choose to actively NOT vote for (ps - the linked post is about a 12-minute read and contains extra links and embeds for more context).
There are some things mentioned that are specific to Kimberley/Cranbrook ridings, but, in general, the post applies to the overall provincial election.
Does anyone know the location to REMAC Mine?
