Hi friends!
I’m planning an event and live music is something I value tremendously. I’m looking for the above musicians, local to Kingston. Since this is so important, there is definitely allotted funds and I’d love to speak to some wonderful musicians to see if we can work out what I envision. Classically trained, preferable!
Thanks so much :)
Does anyone know what was happened with Santa and the Coca-Cola truck behind city hall tonight? Looked like photos w. Santa but not sure.
So the forecast calls for some snow overnight, will the on-street parking ban take place as it's December tomorrow?
While combing through some municipal documents, I just stumbled across something surprising (and honestly a bit concerning). Buried in a bylaw update going to Kingston’s City Council next week, it looks like Kingston Transit is planning to increase a lot of its fees—including for post-secondary students—and the numbers are pretty shocking.
From what I gather, Queen’s students currently pay $122 per year for transit through our AMS deal, and I’ve always thought this was a pretty good setup. Even if not every student uses the bus regularly, it’s great for getting around or those late nights out. Plus, the deal makes transit more affordable for everyone and, I would assume, gives transit dependable revenue.
However, according to the document I found, it seems like the post-secondary student fee is going up to $440 per year. If I’m reading this right, that’s more than a 260% increase compared to what we’ve been paying. I know Ottawa recently had an issue with a 5% increase for their student unions, and there was a lot of pushback because it violated their agreement.
This isn't just about students either. From what I can see, other transit fees across the board are going up as well, but there doesn’t seem to have been much (if any?) consultation about these changes. I get that transit needs more funding—of course!—but these kinds of massive increases feel like they’ve come out of nowhere.
Why weren’t students or community members given more of a heads-up? These changes aren’t small, and they could have a big impact, especially for students and others who rely on transit to get around.
Has anyone else heard about this? Is there something I’m missing?
Any insights or advice would be really appreciated.
Thanks!
(Also, sorry if I’ve misread or misunderstood something—I’m just trying to make sense of it all!)
Hope you're feeling better dude. Get well soon. 🫡💗
Hi all, I have left a set of keys (blue Nike wrist strap, AirTag, phone number and name on keys), on the 7 route at about 5:30. If anyone finds them please reach out to the number on the keys.
Does anyone know if it is possible to get in contact with Kingston transit on the weekend? I’ve filled out a lost and found form but they aren’t answering any phone lines because it’s Saturday. Are there any urgent lines that are open or do I just have to suck it up and wait?
Hi Kingston,
Where is the best place to get your ears pierced? Thanks.
The giant crossword is out tomorrow, I'd love to pick up a copy. Anyone know where I can get it?
What is the point of the extra stop line on Ontario st, heading towards City Hall, next to SPP, about 10 ft back from the intersection stop line? In the right lane, wouldn't it make more sense in the left lane because people always cut that corner turning left off Queen onto Ontario?
Hello! I lost access to my other account. I’m the person that does random embroideries of Kingston buildings etc. Someone pmd me on my other account in October about doing a piece of their building. Can you please DM me here?? I am so not ignoring you, apologies!!
I'm not talking socks you replace every six months, I'm looking for socks that last at least a couple of years.
My husband has worn his Tilley Unholy socks for three years, nearly every work day and they are starting to wear out. He's in the trades so for a sock to last three years with near daily wear (and almost daily washing) is impressive to me. Sadly, it appears Tilley doesn't sell the Unholy socks anymore.
I'm guessing Trailhead would be a good place to start, so I plan to get there soon. I'm hoping to get input from anyone who knows the value of a good sock.
Are there any sock aficionados here who can recommend a local store or even better, a brand? Maybe a high quality hiking sock would work?
Hi folks
Family living in other cities often participate in programs where you pick up kids names from a tree and donate gifts for those kids. Do we have something like that here ?
Has anyone gone to The Social YGK? I see there is live music this evening.
About 6:10 am in the west end. Anybody else hear it, or am I imagining things?
Our gas furnace we were told will not be fixable when it dies. We have been saving up but not sure if we will go with a heat pump or gas furnace & heat pump or another gas furnace only. Anyone here have a gas furnace and heat pump combo? Is it worth it? Who installed? Approx price if you're willing to share this. Thank you in advance!
Why has there been an OPP parked at Collin’s Bay in the legion parking lot for the last few days/weeks?
Does anyone know if there’s alcohol in Costco yet. Asking because I want a reason to get beer and then buy lunch at the same place lol.
I understand that there are more important cases than mine but I’m just saying my piece…. I have a package currently “hostage” in the mail system …. It was due on the last Friday of delivery and didn’t make it…. As it is a federal offence to tamper with federal mail, does that not incur that the postal workers are all guilty of a federal offence by holding our mail hostage? I’m ok with unhappy employees striking and understanding this and also understanding the importance of such an essential service…. They should only be allowed to strike in rotation and slow service down at the most… I feel hostage and that is bs as I don’t have any sway I just want what is rightfully mine! GET BACK TO WORK. CANADIANS ARE SICK OF BEING HELD HOSTAGE BY 55,000 Canadians needs!
Im hearing talk from family friends that Queens' support workers are having a strike vote in the next couple weeks. Could we be looking at a Queens shutdown during second semester?
As the title implies, I'm interested in gathering some information about the local housing market, as well as about people who may be interested in purchasing a new home in Kingston over the next few years. The reason is that I'm interested in developing housing projects within the area, and need market data to help narrow down the best approach.
Two options: I'd love to see your comments here and see where the discussion goes, or you can always contact me directly to have a deeper conversation.
My main questions relate to the types of housing that people are interested in, because the approach we'd be looking at would utilize modular or prefabricated housing, with components built in factory settings, which are then shipped and assembled rapidly on-site.
My main questions would be:
Would you realistically consider modular housing, as opposed to more traditional building methods?
If not, what concerns might be holding you back?
If the state of modular housing technology was demonstrated to be on par with traditional housing in terms of quality, price, and speed, would you still have reservations? If so, please explain.
What if modular homes could be produced at reduced costs, and more quickly compared to traditional methods? Would this alter your opinion? What reservations might remain?
If you are waiting to buy a home, what is the main issue holding you back?
We are looking at several different demographics that might consider modular as an alternative, so which would you identify as? (For example, first time buyer, retiree looking to downsize, relocating for work or school, changing family size, etc.)
What sort of housing are you looking for? (For example, bachelor units, bungalow, 2-bedroom or 3-bedroom multi-level, etc.)
If you currently rent, would you consider purchasing a home if the price was right?
Would you consider co-op housing, in which you are a partial owner, and share responsibility with others for the maintenance and upkeep of the community, and where there would be shared community spaces?
What suggestions might you as the end users have in regards to what home buyers today look for in a home?
How important are sustainability features to you? (For example, highly efficient appliances, sustainable materials, solar panels, etc.)
Would you prefer a home that is pre-furnished in terms of major appliances, or do you prefer to make these purchases yourself?
Thank you in advance if you can spare the time to engage with us!
Our end goal is to help the community by offering a broader, better array of housing options, so your feedback is invaluable in helping to make this happen. We want to find a solution that best utilizes the resources we have at hand, to create options specifically tailored to what the community needs.
