Given the current and upcoming immigration raids, I felt a historical comparison to now and past efforts of Civil Disobedience would be prescient and interesting. Civil disobedience concerning immigration in California has a rich history, especially given the state's unique position as a border state with a large immigrant population. During times of intense immigration raids, teens and pre-teens were used (because the inability to prosecute them as adults) in non-injury sabotage efforts on immigration vehicles, equipment, and operations using techniques outlined in the CIA manual for Simple Sabotage (link to document as follows:) https://cia.gov/static/5c875f3ec660e092cf893f60b4a288df/SimpleSabotage.pdf
Here are some key events and movements prior to the year 2000 that exemplify civil disobedience related to immigration:
Zoot Suit Riots (1943): During World War II, tensions in Los Angeles escalated between young Mexican American men, known for wearing "zoot suits," and Anglo service members. While not solely about immigration, these riots highlighted racial discrimination and tensions tied to a growing immigrant population.
Farm Worker Movement (1960s-1970s): Led by figures like César Chávez and Dolores Huerta, this movement often involved acts of civil disobedience, such as strikes and boycotts, to advocate for the rights of migrant workers. The Delano Grape Strike (1965-1970) was a significant event that drew attention to the labor conditions faced by both documented and undocumented workers.
Sanctuary Movement (1980s): During the 1980s, churches and community groups in California began to harbor Central American refugees fleeing violence and persecution. Many engaged in civil disobedience by providing shelter and assistance, openly challenging U.S. immigration laws. This movement exemplified direct action against the deportation of immigrants.
Protests Against Proposition 187 (1994): This controversial California ballot initiative sought to deny services, including education and health care, to undocumented immigrants. In response, thousands of activists organized protests and sit-ins, expressing their discontent with the measure. Civil disobedience in the form of mass protests occurred throughout California during the campaign against Proposition 187.
Immigrant Rights Marches (1990s): The 1990s saw increased activism for immigrant rights, leading to large marches and demonstrations. Civil disobedience emerged as a tactic in these events, particularly in response to anti-immigration laws and sentiments that spread nationally.
Hello KRV. I'm looking for a gig or two to help me get through the month. I have a Ford F250 and can do hauling jobs, dump runs, and moving. I'm a full time college student and my financial aid has been delayed and rent is due on the first. I'm about $300 short at the moment so anything will help even small jobs. Thank you in advance.
Does anyone know of a junkyard/ salvage service that is willing to go up the mountain to haul away old junk cars/trucks? Or cut them up for scrap metal? Can be based in KV or Ridgecrest? I would also say Bako but they would likely would have to take the long way up through the desert since i cant imagine anyone hauling something on Sherman Pass. Its a big job and i need to get a quote together but don't even know where to start.
Any suggestions for a relatively low effort trail for a dog walk? Some incline is fine, but my girl can’t take anything too adventurous.
Missing Cat, he ran away at the rivernook campgrounds. If anyone sees him, please grab him. He is a very sweet cat. His name is Jake. He is a little skiddish and anxious but shouldn't be to difficult to get him to come to you.
Cash reward to whoever finds him. We just want him to come home.
Spending all of my summers there in the 70’s and 80’s I’m surprised it didn’t grow to more of a tourist spot. The lake is amazing, and expected it to be overrun by now.
Just curious what people thoughts are on this.
They were awesome people.
I hadn’t spent much time in the area since I was young, and it brought back a lot of fond memories.
My dad left a fly fishing pole in a black case off the side of mountain highway 99 between limestone campground and Kernville. If anyone has it or knows anything, let me know. Much appreciated thanks!

I'm new to reddit so I'm excited to see how word goes around with this vs Instagram etc.
Obviously it’s guessing but wanted to visit and aware of the difficult situation with fires. Just don’t know if it’s “no way for a long time” or more tbd
The event will be on Wed, Aug 7 (tomorrow, as of posting) at KRV Bridge Connection at 6069 Lake Isabella Blvd from 10-1.
Boys & Girls Club, KRV Bridge Connection, and many more are partnering to bring resources for victims of the 2024 fire season (not just the Borel Fire).
Gift cards may be used to purchase according to your needs.
Or someone that wants to make some cash to shuttle me up Sherman pass?
i know mediacom isn't exactly dependable even under the most ideal circumstances but i've been constantly going up and down the last few days (my area wasn't evacuated). trying to figure out if it has something to do with the fire or if it's just my problem and i should be calling in a tech. and mediacom customer support has been useless (shocking /s).
figured it'd be better to ask here. i run a home business and the internet plays a part of that (in addition to keeping an eye on things since phone data is weak at best) but i know asking on facebook i'd just get mocked for not being able watch my soaps or something.
Is it smoky in kernville due to the fire?
Watch out for fire crews though
This post will be pinned. Please comment with any resources available to those evacuating, including resources for eg horses and livestock.
