Just getting back to fishing after a few decades away. Don’t have a measure or scale yet, but that’s a size 10 1/2 shoe with the picture for what it’s worth.
What was weird today, is the unbelievable number of large bass I saw swimming along the drop-offs and shadows. I noticed the fish very quickly and was expecting a banner day. There was basically no wind today so the 120 acres of water was mostly smooth and made for great visibility. Despite being able to see so many fish, I only caught two; kind of a bummer, but was glad I got the big one.
Great day fishing but it ended sour. Lost one of my favorite rods. 😪😭 Lesson learned put floats on rod. Lol
Looking for a first fishing kayak.
Wanting to give pedal a go first to see if that is enough. But want the ability to add a motor if I want to later. Going to be on small lakes where the wind will be the biggest problem in staying still.
the Old Town Sportsman PDL 120 has mounting holes for a power pole, but could a motor mount be added in that same spot? Or would it being not centered effect the action of the kayak. That is the upper end of what I want to spend right now, looking around $2k ideally. Not finding much used in my area.
Vanhunks has others as well that may work but are fin drive?
Anyone wanna go kayak fishing early am sunday. I was thinking sd bay
Had lots of luck with light colored swim baits around the edges of the lake. Florida has its faults, but mornings like this tend to cancel them out for a bit!
The Weekly Discussion Thread is a place where everyone in the /r/kayakfishing community can come and ask questions or share anything.
You might have questions that you don't think deserve an entire post. Perhaps you're just seeking the input of some other anglers. Maybe you want to share a picture of your new gear.
Anyone is free to comment, and (hopefully) get as much input as possible from other anglers.
Anyone got any form of FFS on their PDL 106? Doesn’t matter if it’s livescope, ActiveTarget or whatever the others call it. Just looking at any and all FFS setups. Really more interested in transducer/transducer pole mounting, wiring and how the wires were ran. Bonus points if you utilize any of the YakPower products. Chartplotter recommendations welcome but not necessary. Thanks!
Does anyone use a battery monitor? I’d like one that’s as simple and just connecting 2 wires to the battery if that’s how it works. I have a LiTime battery but I heard theirs isn’t great in the reviews and isn’t meant to be outside in the elements. I have a battery level on my box but didn’t realize that would only work on a lead acid because it looses voltage. The lithium stays at voltage till it dies so I could be on the verge of a dead battery and the meter will read 100%. I would like to have this because I was to spot lock all day for blackfish and I have no idea how long it will run on a 100ah battery. Thanks in advance.
Looking to get a legitimate anchor set up on my Nucanoe Frontier 10. I've been using Paracord and a dumbbell and I'm honestly struggling to have room for it with what I pack now. Was wondering what y'all's favorite set ups were. I'm looking at the Scotty anchor lock system, but wondering if it'll throw me off having it suspended off the side or front of the kayak all day
I need to replace mine and these are super hard to find. Anyone had success with an alternative option for this?
I have a $3k budget and have been looking to buy a kayak for bass fishing in rivers and lakes. I’ve looked at a lot of them and have decided that I would like to have one with pedal drive, also I’m not against getting a used kayak either. Any recommendations?
Title says it all... My sounder doesn't seem to show many arches, even when I am catching fish. It shows structure well. I have it in the black/green colour setting and anything that's living (I assume) shows up in red and yellow. But I mostly only see red squiggly lines along the bottom, no arches though. Even when cat hing fish.
If I Burley up the water, it shows fish appearing underneath me, so I am pretty sure its working?
My understanding was I could use the fish finder to see schools of fish around structure and drop my bait/lure into them. I'm finding it this isn't working so well though. Am I missing something? Wrong settings?
FWIW, I'm fishing in open salt water in a gulf. Sandy weedy bottom. Forgot to take pics as I was busy catching fish but i've noticed a few times the sounder is blank while I am catching fish or getting lots of good sized bites-.
Any ideas?
I have been out on my new Hobie Outback about a half dozen times. Loving every minute of it! Something that comes to mind each time I am out is the idea of some sort of horizontal rod holder (for storage, not trolling).
I have a yak attack crate on the back with six vertical holders, but I am already feeling like having a few rods to the side of me will be better than having them behind me.
I have the standard H rails that came on the Outback.
I’m aware there are a few options for horizontal rod holders.
-Which models would you recommend or say to avoid?
-Do you typically put the horizontal holders just on one side of the cockpit or both?
Thank you for your consideration.
Hello all,
I know this topic has been beaten to death in a way, but I'm wondering if this is a potential exception to the need for a drysuit. I want to kayak fish in a mountain lake that's 1 mile by 1 mile across at the widest parts. The areas I would be looking to troll in are 0.15 to 0.25 mi from dry land at the most, sometimes shorter. Others have islands closer but not connected to the main land.
Would it be safe to kayak in fall with a PFD, wetsuit, in these conditions with a waterproof bagged phone to call for help if needed? No major waves or real threat of capsize, very few if any other craft on the water.
I am also interested in ice fishing, which a dry suit would be overkill but potentially a second use

Hey all, brand new to pedal driven kayak fishing. I picked up a used old town PDL a few months ago, and every time I take it out I have trouble getting the pedal drive to fit into the yak. I have to give it a little shove every time to make it sit properly. Videos I watch online show a really simple process where the PDL system just slides into place; but all those kayaks are brand new.
Is this just an issue older used kayaks have, or am I doing something wrong?
I recently picked up a 12' fishing kayak and I am hoping to upgrade my roof rack situation to make things a little quicker for me. I currently have a 2017 4runner and I am finding that presents some challenges to getting the kayak on the roof. The guy I bought the boat from was nice to include some suction cup rails, which have useful as the 4Runner only has side rails right now, but I am hoping to get a more permanent solution that doesn't require me to strap down a rack every time.
The difficulty with the 4runner is that it has an antenna shark fin on the back that protudes about 3" up from the rear of the roof. Additionally, there is an overhang on the rear hatch that protrudes about 8" vertically when the hatch is open, so I need a rack that gives a bit of a height boost to the kayak so it doesn't interfere with those parts of the car.
My budget is about $600 so a lot of the higher end options like Thule or full size frame racks are probably out of the question unless I find them used.
Took my new Old Town Sportsman PDL 120 out for the first time Saturday and Sunday. (Bought to replace the 10-year-old Old Town Predator that we bought used as my first kayak.)
Vastly improved the kayaking and fishing experience. Wind? Pedal backwards. Current?
Pedalled all day with nary a complaint.
Only complaint was from my wife as she watched me fish twice as much because she had to cope with a paddle and a fishing pole.
I did break it fifteen minutes after we launched in the a bayou when I hit a submerged log had enough to snap a lock knob. Now I know they're designed to do just that. (Already ordered two replacements and will soon have a spare prop, seat risers and a few other extras.)
This boat has changed my (fishing) life. My wife will be pedalling soon.
how do u keep yall butt dry lol
With just a paddle not pedal
I’m looking into getting an old town predator 13 for salt water fishing ! I know the kayak weights about 80lbs, And is an older kayak but I’m getting it super cheap. Is the predator 13 good for salt water? Is it with the 80lb lift? Is it good in the water? Is a paddle boat not worth it ?
Looking to get a fishing kayak for next year (it's too cold now to bother investing in something that will sit in the shed all winter). I'd love a Sportsman 106 PDL but obviously the cost is the biggest factor, $3600 CAD before tax is not cheap. Meanwhile the Catchmode 110 Hydryve is only $2000 CAD, or even $1100 for the paddle-only version. I think the propeller on the Sportsman is probably better than the paddles of the Catchmode but I don't think that's a big enough reason to decide. However, I do know that my wife will probably want to come out with me at least once or twice on the kayak, and while I know it's not designed for two people she is petite and both kayaks should accommodate both our weights even if there isn't a lot of room, and it would only be for very short amounts of time on calm lakes.... so, would the Sportsman carry two people better? Or would the Catchmode be fine for very rarely having a passenger?
Edit: Looks like Old Town Bigwater 132 is an option, for sale locally for $3500 CAD (they're asking too much ). Could tandem that one.
