Finally got my Hobie back after 2 trips to the shop. After a day of bridge fishing with no troubles, decided to really test it with a 17 mile trolling adventure in the Gulf. No fish landed, but it was a helluva workout

Fishing kayaks similar to old town 120

Hi , I’m looking to buy a nicer 12’ fishing kayak in the 800-1200 range and am weighing my options , right now the one I have my eyes on is the old town sportsman 120. I will be using mostly in creeks , and lakes, may use it on large river for duck hunting on occasion. The only thing deterring me from the old town 120 is the weight of 80ish lbs? I understand most quality 12’ are gonna be similar weights but would love to find something a tad bit lighter. Looking for a good balance of stability and tracking/speed (being able to stand up on occasion is a plus)

Battery opinions for kayak

Looking for a battery for my kayak that can last 10+ hours. I will be fishing larger lakes and parts of the tennessee river. I currently have a lowrance hook 2 4x. It says to use a 10.4 to 17.0 V battery. I will be getting a newport kayak series trolling motor that has 55 pound thrust but I cant see any recomendations for battery voltage. Will be adding small white light due to new local laws.

I am not certain what ah means/does exactly or how much I would need in a battery. Will a 12v battery with 100 ah or a 12 v with 18 ah work or do I need something bigger? Any and all advice would be appreciated

Hands-Free Fishing Kayak: Foot-Only Steering & Seamless Direction Changes with a PROP—Interested?

Hey everyone!

I’ve been working on a fully manual, foot-pedal-powered kayak concept, offing truly hands-free fishing which is made possible by a unique design that gives you continuous pedaling-in-steering power....

The idea is a pure hands-free fishing experience, with truly continuous pedaling-while-steering—so no separate rudder handle, knob, or electronic assist, and no separate foot pedal to press to change direction, no awkward change in posture to steer or anything like that.

What Makes It Different?

  1. Foot-Only Steering: You control both pedaling and steering without ever taking your feet off the pedals. Steer left, right, or back again all from the same foot position—no extra levers or knobs.
  2. Pivoting Prop (Not Just a Rudder): The prop can rotate up to ~180°, so steering isn’t dependent on forward momentum. You get precise control at low speeds, in strong currents, or in still water.
  3. Continuous Pedaling-While-Turning: Need to change direction? Just pivot the prop with your feet—no stopping, shifting, or removing your feet from the pedals. NONE. Of course, reverse is as simple as pedaling backward.
  4. Hands-Free Fishing: With your hands off the steering controls at all times, you can focus on casting, managing gear, and landing fish without interruption.

Questions for the Community

  • Have you seen a pedal-drive kayak that combines all these features—pivoting prop, foot-only steering, continuous pedaling and fully-manual? Of course, you could still have power (optional).
  • If it doesn’t exist, would you be interested in this for truly hands-free maneuvering tight spots, fishing in current, or holding position in windy conditions?
  • Any thoughts on potential issues, design tweaks, or must-have features?

Thanks for reading, and I’d love to know if this concept hits on features you’d want in a fishing kayak!

Costco Kayak

Has anyone bought the fishing kayak from Costco in Canada? I've searched online and it seems like it's a roit maco 12 under a different name. The maco 12 has very mixed reviews. I've never done any kayak fishing as close as I have gotten is an old paddleboat my inlaws used to have.

I guess a link would be helpful

MFD for Florida fishing - Simrad/Lowrance or Hummingbird

I currently have a Simrad NSS and Florida Marine Tracks. IU picked up a MK 55 trolling motor. I'm trying to decide between either the Simrad Go9/Lowrance and be able to use Florida Marine Track, or go Hummingbird to be able to tie in to my trolling motor. I'm thinking FMT is way more important but haven't seen the Hummingbird charts in a while. I know the Raymarine Axiom also is compatible but lower on my list.

Life jackets

Do y'all prefer automatic/manual inflating jackets or a vest type with/without pockets when out floating or fishing from your kayak. I have the vest type but never really worn it while floating down the river because it's so bulky and uncomfortable, but when I'm using my Jon boat I always wear it while the gas motor is running. I'm looking for something comfortable to wear the whole time but not be too big and bulky as to restrict movement.

The Weekly Discussion Thread is a place where everyone in the /r/kayakfishing community can come and ask questions or share anything.

You might have questions that you don't think deserve an entire post. Perhaps you're just seeking the input of some other anglers. Maybe you want to share a picture of your new gear.

Anyone is free to comment, and (hopefully) get as much input as possible from other anglers.

Old Town EPDL new model coming?

I recently made a post and had tons of people recommend the EPDL, and I decided to bite the bullet and look in to getting one. Only problem is, where I live is a dang geographical oddity, 4 hours from everywhere (if I'm lucky). Most of the places in that 4 hour drive radius that do have them listed on their sites have them listed as 'out of stock' and have for a month or two now.

So that made me wonder- is there a new EPDL on the horizon? Or is there just supply issues effecting my ability to find one?

Found something.

Ok since my last post about the "flip flop" went so good 😂, I found this. Sun Dolphin Boss 12ss. NOW before yinz say anything, I have read that some wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole and some that actually love it. For the price I think it may be the best for me to start out on and then eventually upgrade to something better down the line.

With all that said, I want yinzs opinions and thoughts.

Better safe than sorry. I had pvc pipe insulation leftovers, decided to protect the investments with it. So far so good - left on the water for 5-7min and still float & no line tangle issue. I should wrap it with something colorful tho (for locating purposes should something happen)

Getting kayak on top of ram 2500

So I'm searching for a roof rack, to get my stealth fusion onto our new truck in an easy fashion. I got a bum shoulder, so it is rather challenging just lifting it.

It's way too long for the bed, and I have some Thule hullivators, which worked borderline for the jeep (besides messing up the door panels, due to clearance issues) but I would love to keep using them, except the truck is about 5" higher than the jeep, which will make it even more challenging.

Trailer is not a choice, due to having a trailer we are towing already.

Any ideas, what I can use/utilize? Preferably with pictures?

What are the 4 screw holes in the back of my kayak for?

I have the Pryml Legend Ghost Fishing Kayak from BCF, and it has 4 screw holes in the back of it.

Are these for mounting a flag or light pole to? Or an electric motor perhaps?

Thanks in advance.

Purchasing first kayak

have done kayak fishing in regular kayaks and want to know recs for starter kayak. Relatively low budget and if it matters to buy a kayak designed for fishing. I have been looking at ORU kayaks which are foldable and easy to transport which is important for me but I'm worried I might miss fish because I'm sitting down in the kayak instead of on top like most fishing kayaks are designed. Do you think being able to sit on top of the kayak seriously helps your ability to catch fish or not?
