Kalaallisut words in English

Did you know that there are a few Greenlandic/Inuit words in English? The word “Inuit,” for example, means “people” and is the plural of “inuk.” The words “igloo” (snow house), “kayak” (boat), “anorak” (jacket), “nunatak” (mountain protuding from an ice sheet) come from Inuit languages, including Kalaallisut.

Fun fact: The Greenlandic language is polysynthetic, which basically means that words can get really long, like “Kalaallisut oqalussinnaanngilanga” (“I don’t speak Greenlandic”) or “Qiteqatigerusuppingaa?“ (“Would you like to dance with me?”, from Omniglot).
