Darcy’s tenants dunk him in the lake?

Looking for one I read on kindle. An old love interest of Darcy’s interferes and causes rumours, Darcy’s tenants dunk him a lake because they think he’s acting poorly? Elizabeth calls off the wedding and has random catholic rich relatives.

Recs?

I’ve recently been diving back into the world of JAFF after a minor reading slump and came across “Speechless” by Jessie Lewis. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and am wondering if anyone has any recommendations of any other stories where Darcy and Elizabeth are forced into close proximity, due to some sort of natural disaster or emergency. Some others I’ve enjoyed are “Stranded with Mr. Darcy” by Lin Mei Wei and “Snowbound” by Joanna Starnes.

Looking for a modern Elizabeth/Darcy story

In this story Elizabeth is an EMT/paramedic/firefighter or something along those lines and she saves Darcy's life. He asks her out afterwards and she says that it's just hero-worship, that his feelings are confused cuz she saved him. Then i think the story jumps forward and when they meet again Darcy says to her that 'his feelings haven't changed'. They do start going out and Lizzie starts to take care of Darcy's pet turtle, I think. And then a few chapters later she goes "You know why i'm trying so hard to take care of him? It's practice." Like for their kids.

Looking for D/E story

Probably a long shot. It has been on my mind for years and I can’t remember much of anything anymore except this scene.

Mr Darcy is at Rosings having just recently arrived. Lady C is talking about how Elizabeth had rejected a marriage proposal (cant remember how this topic came about)and Darcy, thinking its about him, almost spills the drink he was pouring (tea??) as his hands shake and goes pale AF but then as LadyC continues to talk he realizes it was not HIS marriage proposal rejection LadyC was referring to.

I’ve been wanting to find it so bad but can’t for the life of me remember anything else about the book. May have been a published book instead of fanfic on a website??

Edited to add: if there is somewhere else I can post this that maybe others may be able to help let me know and I’ll post there too! No spilling of tea sadly LOL

Anyone here who would like to write Regency letters?

Dear ladies and gentlemen,

I stumbled on your wonderful community while browsing reddit and thought you might like the following subreddit.

r/fictitious_letters

It's a sub where people post requests for epistolary roleplay. They take over the POV of historical persons, fictional characters, or daydream alter egos and write letters from their perspective.

Maybe this is an idea for all of you too. Not just because Jane Austen makes frequent use of letters in her novels but also because it's a great way to slip into the Regency period and experience an Austen-style friendship or even love affair through a roleplay correspondence.

You can bring one of Jane Austen's original characters to the sub or create your own Regency character. By writing to an equally imaginary character, you can flesh out this character and send them on an interesting adventure.

Of course, you can use modern digital mail to send your Jane-Austen-themed letters. However, it is even more fun to use snail mail, old-fashioned stationary and wax seals for the purpose.

There have already been a couple of prompts related to Jane Austen on the subreddit and maybe you like to add more. It would be nice to meet you in the community.

Recommendations for Well connected Bennet pics

Hello all! I was trying to remember the name of a story I read recently where Mr. Bennet maintained the connections he forged in university (It's Checkmate Mr. Dary, highly recommend if you haven't read it yet), and I wanted to see if anyone knew of any other fics with a well connected Bennet family?

Looking for a fic including Beau Brummell

At some point I read a fic centered around Mary or Kitty, and they meet and impress Beau Brummell. They meet in a ballroom and dance before they find out who he is.

Would be so appreciative if anyone knows of it. Was definitely not on Kindle Unlimited.

Competent Bingley?

After reading yet another fic where Bingley is a spineless child under the thumb of his sister, I would love recs for stories where he is shown to have a spine, or develops one over the course of the story, and is generally shown to be competent and worthy of Jane. Jane/Bingley recs preferred, but I'll take any pairing.

Looking for His Choice of a Wife by Heather Moll

I can find it in paperback, but can't justify $13 for it right now. Does anyone know if it's posted anywhere?

Yup. Found it. I clicked a link that didn't go there, and then didn't look further. Silly me. 🤦‍♀️

Lydia Bennet/Colonel Fitzwilliam

I'm looking for ANY fics like this, but also a specific one, where post a terrible marriage to George Wickham, Lydia lives with one of her sisters (Elizabeth I believe), and after many visits, Colonel Fitzwilliam (or another OCM?) falls in love with her, and they eventually get married.

Also any fics where Lydia marries Wickham, but ends up finding love post Wickham getting it in someway.

I don't have Kindle Unlimited, so free sites are prefered please.

Mr. Darcy/Jane Bennet

Please don't hate me. But does anyone have any Mr.Darcy with Jane Bennet pairings for me? I love Elizabeth, but sometimes I think Jane would have been better suited with Mr. Darcy. 😅🙈

PSA that I'm probably the only one late to the party on...

But I didn't realise that there is so much that's on fanfiction.net that isn't on AO3 and vice versa. I've always just used AO3, because I like the functionality better. But i have been missing out!

a few questions regarding P&P fanfiction

(I’ve been kind of addicted recently… anyway, these are some questions I had based on some of the fanfics I’ve read).

  1. Do you consider Charlotte Lucas to be a former romantic?

This is a pretty common trope in many of the ones I read. Rather than simply desiring a comfortable home, as she explains to Lizzy, her lack of a romantic nature is based more on her age and looming lack of prospects; essentially a man who loves her for her (enter: Colonel Fitzwilliam in 99% of stories) will turn her from a cynic into a romantic.

Speaking only for myself, it might be unpopular… but I don’t mind the non romantic Charlotte Lucas we are shown in canon. I’m not going to label her as an aromantic icon of the Regency era, but I think her worldview contrasts nicely with Lizzy’s and likely the audience (especially a modern one) as well. I do headcanon that she perhaps almost got engaged when she was younger, or at least fell in love, but the man didn’t think she truly had feelings (hence her advice to Jane through Lizzy). That’s my view on Charlotte as a romantic, anyway.

  1. How do you think the Fitzwilliams would react to Darcy marrying Lizzy?

Many of the stories I read make them the biggest supporters, or at least hesitantly supportive. The ones that don’t tend to give the unnamed Earl and his family their own reasons, such as the Earldom being in debt and needing Darcy to marry some influential/rich peer to get them out of their trouble. Or supporting the Darcy / Anne match for the same reason.

I feel conflicted on my view of the matter. On the one hand, it’s difficult to see Colonel Fitzwilliam being against the marriage, and surely his own reaction should speak for that of his family? But when writers make the Fitzwilliams protest the match because of their own problems, it makes it seem like Lady Catherine would have been fine with Lizzy if only she didn’t want Anne to marry Darcy.

  1. Should Bingley shoulder the blame for listening to Darcy and his sisters, and leaving Meryton?

This is fairly common in fanfictions where Lizzy and Darcy reach an understanding sooner. Darcy will be apologising, and Lizzy (sometimes even Jane) will tell him that Bingley could have returned himself. On the one hand, I understand this argument but I also feel like it attempts to absolve Darcy of blame for his part. It’s generally agreed upon that Darcy had his own reasons beyond just being concerned for Bingley’s heart - Elizabeth being one such reason and I also read a piece on Darcy hoping to see Bingley and his sister married as well.

It also seems like nobody blames Bingley when talking about Caroline or Louisa, even though it could be argued that their reasons are just as righteous as Darcy’s. Sure, status and wealth isn’t as romantic as love, but they still had their reasons.

Favourite deleted (unpublished) P&P variations

Thanks to the internet archive, I've found some of the most amazing stories that, though never published, were still deleted (shout-out to the wonderful redditor who found ellen’s work). The other day, I discovered yet another of these gems when it was recommended in the sub.

That's what got me wondering: What's your favourite deleted story?

Hello all

I’m in need of assistance. Sad to admit that I have done myself a huge disservice of not knowing about JAFF until just now(I’ve always known fanfiction sites exist as I read so much on FF.net/AO3/WP). And now that I’ve discovered it i would very much like to register an account to utilize the JAFF index. Could someone point me in the right direction please.

Calling all Heather Moll fans

First, I read all your “comfort” suggestions and really appreciated those.

Now I’m looking for a steamy read on the same order as Heather Moll-ish. Does that make sense? I feel like a broken record with my picky tastes but I like tastefully steamy/explicit.

Recs about outsiders' reactions

I'm looking for P&P variations/ff in which other people (could be mr. Darcy's family, friends , acquitances, people from the ton, etc) meet Elizabeth and we get to read their reaction to his feelings or his behaviour around her. Could be before or after she becomes mrs darcy.

Thank you!

Supernatural-themed JAFF

Hi all, I don't usually hang out here but someone on the main Jane Austen sub asked for supernatural-themed fanfic recs so here we are! All of these are fantastically written and have supernatural elements (vampires, ghosts, magic etc), with the expection of one that I felt was horror-adjacent enough to be included. If that's not your cup of tea, please skip these. I'm not sure which flair to apply so apologies for that.

Personally I really love fics where a fantastical element is thought through and integrated into the worldbuilding and plot, with all the repercussions of how society and individuals might react to it, and I think all of these do that very well.

https://archiveofourown.org/series/2134506 - short stories, mostly more cracky than scary, I recommend to fans of dark comedy and/or comedy horror! TW for suicide ideation in the P&P one, which is also a lot more bittersweet.

https://archiveofourown.org/works/15431100/chapters/35817951 and this author has a couple other AUs in a similar vein, so definitely check out their full profile.

https://archiveofourown.org/works/299134 not really supernatural but still has sorta horror-y vibes? Mostly fairly mild psychological horror, I guess.

https://archiveofourown.org/series/2555350 - possibly the best example of what I mean by 'working the supernatural elements into the society and plot'.

https://archiveofourown.org/series/1456996 - fusion with His Dark Materials and Jonathon Strange and Mr Norrell (no knowledge of either of those two works required as prequisite though). Fair warning, this one is unfinished and I don't know if she's ever going to return to it (she's also an ex-friend so I feel mildly weird about recommending this, but it is genuinely brilliant and I couldn't leave it out in good conscience!)

Enjoy!

Looking For A Fic

I don't remember the details or the plot - I was focusing mostly on Mary's storyline in the fic - but I remember her LI being named Alex and I think he was Colonel Fizwilliam's brother? The LI was titled, and she agrees to marry him after a huge fire at Netherfield, I think. (Set by Miss Bingley? Or someone trying to frame her? As I said, I don't remember details, all I remember was Mary being very wary of being courted.) I know I read it on a fanfic site - I think fanfic dot net - but for the life of me I can't remember the name. Does that ring any bells for anyone?
