Been digging the effect and the picking and brain workout of playing tunes whilst changing string after every note. Here's The Boys of Tulla

Looking for a button accordion (Cork area)

As the title says I'm currently looking for a (used) B/C button box preferably somewhere in co. Cork. I prefer not to buy one from the bigger shops, especially since a lot of those are student models. A Paolo Soprani or Saltarelle would be great, but the 'brand' does not matter all that much. Any leads would be welcomed!

can you tell me some irish folk songs that are nice to whistle?

I need some input ideas, my male protagonists whistles songs while working, it's one of his quirks/traits, and the girl that has a crush on him listens to one of these songs and recognizes it, as she's irish too. So it helps to bond them, as they are both young irish migrants in England in the early 1920s.

I was thinking about Molly Malone, but I also need some other ideas. Love songs are fine too. As long as they are easy to whistle and to recognize. Sea shanties sound fine too.

“The Effects of the Censorship of Irish Rebel Songs on the Irish Identity” Dissertation Survey

Hi! I am a third year music business student looking for people to fill out a quick survey for my dissertation titled "The Effects of the Censorship of Irish Rebel Songs on the Irish Identity". I'd really appreciate it if you could take the time to fill it out - all data is anonymous and will be deleted in June 2024.:

Looking for a song I heard recently.

Need song title and artist.

Hey group.

Hoping for help from someone with a wider knowledge of the genre.

About a month ago, a song played on my phone that I meant to get the name of for future listening. I stupidly thought I'd remember to look at the song info when I got out of the car but alas!

I've been hearing the song in my head without knowing enough of it to search it on Google with any accuracy.

The song is by a female artist, most likely Irish.

Subject of the song is a marriage which is strained because the husband is in love with a man but is trying to either hide it or not admit it.

The wife isn't mad, more sad that he couldn't love her the same way.

A part of the lyrics mention that he talks about this guy when he's sleeping. Another part I think mentions that she just wants him to.look at her the way he looks at this other man.

I know it's not much to work with. Anyone who might have an idea please comment.

Thanks to all in advance.

Any information about The Battering Ram?

The band, not the jig they're named after.

I know this probably won't lead to much information, but the album "Irish Rebel Songs" by The Battering Ram is one of my favorite albums of this genre. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41Fkxwnidnk&list=PLA1JDj4iwC53z0Ivntu4NPDW3bohfBvfX&index=72

In the description of this video there's a biography that has been copy-pasted a bunch of times on the internet linking them to Bill McBurney who owned Outlet Records in Belfast (he seems like an interesting person from what I've read of him). But it says they recorded a total of SEVEN albums for Outlet Records. Seven?

Now, I don't expect anyone here to have the slightest clue what happened to these seven albums, but those are some LPs I'd really like to track down if possible. I don't even know where this biography originally came from, if it was included in the 1998 CD or what.

But yeah any information about The Battering Ram at all would be interesting because they're such an obscure band, despite their songs having quite a lot of views on youtube. Come Out and Fight has almost 300k, and that's where I first discovered them.

Chord help for session tunes

Hi! I play harp professionally but am relatively new to Irish tunes. I just got back from the Edinburgh harp festival with this session book. I’m learning the Melodie’s by ear but have been referring to the book for chords. The chords in pencil are alternate ones I found on another source. My question is- do Irish tunes have standard “more widely known” chords or does everyone seem to interpret and play them differently? I’d like to learn the most basic and standard version to start. My goal is to play in sessions and I want to make sure I’m learning the chords that most people play the tunes with (if there is such a thing)

Thanks for any input!

Kerry whistle website a little . . . weird?

Hi!

I bought a tunable low D Kerry Optima several years ago from the company's online store based on an old Irish flute teacher's recommendation. However, I didn't really pay much attention to their website at the time; I just went straight to the product I wanted and ordered it. It's been a great investment, but I feel like it's time to get a new one.

When I went to check out their other low D models, maaaan is their online presence strange. Right now, they have three tunable options: the Busker, Chieftain V5, and Chieftain V5 custom, but there's no substantial comparison of the whistles anywhere to be found. There's also no contact information listed for me to ask what the differences are. Can someone tell me what makes each one special compared to the Kerry Optima?

Thanks!

I'm writing an Irish ballet!

All about Ireland and just Irish. It'll have Irish dancing, ballet etc. I am feckin crazy. I have to come up with 30 minutes of reels, jigs and so on and make sure they're catchy and fun. Thankfully I have about 10 years worth of stuff I've got in the vault.

Modern drum makers?

Who are the bodhràn makers in the 21st century?

I have done online searches and McNeela comes up a lot followed by whatever Amazon has. The person that made my drums is retiring and, while I do not need a new drum at the moment, it would be nice to see the state of the art.

Edit

Thank you all

Willie Clancy School for 11yo accordionist?

Probably too late for this year, but thinking of the Willie Clancy Summer School for next year. My son is doing button accordion private lessons (the nearest Comhaltas on Navan Road no longer doing lessons). So it's been suggested it might be good for him to have lessons and get to play in a group environment.

But I'm wondering what he'll get out of it: I can't find anyone talking about the lessons themselves, the only reviews just mention the drinking and craic (I've nothing against drinking and craic, but I reckon as a couple with a 11 year old we won't be sessioning hard).

Also, we don't drive, and I can't find any local bike rental services, and I've no idea how easy taxis are to come by in the area, so that's probably an issue. Don't mind getting a bus from Ennis to Spanish Point, but since the button accordion lessons are in Quilty, which is a 40 minute walk from there, that a journey twice each day which would be a pain if taxis aren't available and we can't rent bikes. Any thoughts appreciated,

Button box!

Wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of a reasonably priced student model of button box. I have a one row in the key of G but it's not the best for playing with others, I'd like to find a B/C without spending $2000+ because I know it won't be my main instrument. But even finding a B/C is proving to be difficult. I'm in Ontario and I can't even seem to find even online sellers that stock boxes in B/C, it's almost exclusively G/C or A/D. Only place I know that Sells them would be McNeela but they're not ideal from what I gather, and I'm having a hard time even finding them used. Does anyone have any recommendations for where to look?

Who are people's favourite trad/folk groups in Ireland currently?

And i mean trad and folk in the broadest sense to include 'neotrad' groups like Lankum etc. I love people like Ye Vagabonds and John Francis Flynn, but I am sure there are loads of good groups playing gigs around Dublin (where I live) that I could be going to ! Any favourites that I should check out ?
