Icecoast Ski Suggestion

Hey everyone! I'm getting back into skiing after a few years off and decided it's time for a new pair of skis. Last year I went to a boot fitter got hooked up with some solid boots so now I'm looking for a good pair of skis.

About me:

- 6'0 , 195 Pounds

- Mainly ski the Ice Coast (Vermont, New York, sometimes PA). One or two trips to Colorado/Utah a year, but if my skis aren't ideal for those conditions I have no problem just renting out there.

- I would say I'm comfortable on most of the trails on the east coast. I generally stick to blues/blacks, dabble in trees when there's enough snow, and stay away from bumps (not my thing)

- More of a laid back/relaxed skier. Never really trying to be the fastest/most aggressive skier on the mountain, I'm more looking for a playful/forgiving ski that can handle well in the ice/crud we usually get here.

In the past I've skied on Blizzard Brahmas, which I've come to realize are the exact opposite of what I need haha

Here are some of the skis I've looked into and would appreciate some feedback, or other recommendations.

- Elan Ripstick 88

- The K2 Mindbender series, specifically the 90C / 89Ti / 96C (I'm aware there's a massive difference between them)

- Salomon QST 92

- Line Optic 88

- Armada Declivity 88C / 92 Ti

Smugglers notch like resorts?

Have a 2 year old now and was thinking Smuggs would be good (only been in the summer) but just too far with botch closed. Are there any other ski in/out communities with activities for non skiers like Smuggs. I know Jay does with the water park but that’s also a trip.

I need help with finding a Board

I’m new to snowboarding i just started last season and i was looking at buying my own board before this season starts. I found a board and bindings on evo on sale but i don’t know if the board would be good for a beginner or how it is for east coast snowboarding. I will link it below.

Shin bang (what to do)

Hi everyone,

Last season I got pretty bad shin bang that just made it painful to ski in the trees and generally sucked.

I’m wondering what other people have done to remediate the issue.

As a first step I’m going to buy foam inserts that reduce the space between my shin and boot. Might also get my boots custom fitted since I own them. Also investing in high quality socks.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: Really appreciate everyone’s thoughtful replies. Thank you all.

He’s back at it…skiology Matt

For any of those who subscribe to him or comment on his posts, be aware if you ever disagree with him or even question him he will do everything he can to contact your employer and say you harassed him.

Keep in mind he is a 54 year old man taking time out of “his busy day” to do this.

You may appreciate what he does, but he’s a class A douche.

I will also continue to share his weather reports here that I receive through a friend of a friend.

Trip recommendations

Hello all, I’m on the northeast value pass and I would like to hit some of the bigger mountains on my pass this season. I was looking at hunter, okemo, and mt snow. Does it make more sense to try to hit all of these in one trip or choose one to stay at for 2-3 days? Also should I go early season or late season or both? And is it worth taking time off during the week vs making it a long weekend?

The absolute warmest pants?

I'm looking for the absolute warmest pants you have ever worn before. I'm talking straight up ovens for pants. Some sort of bottom article of clothing that nukes your legs. I've seen fleece lined stuff before but i'm wondering if anyone has found any niche clothing items meant for extreme cold that doesn't count as mountaineering gear.

Indy Pass RFIDs - Standardized Gate Entry at All Mtns, or Not Yet?

Has Indy standardized the RFID card for the pass overall with each individual resort's system, or are folks still going to the windows to pickup and activate separate cards upon visit?

(Fringe question but curious if anyone's got some confirmed info if they'll be ready this season or not)

Armada ARV 94 for all mountain?

I'm around 5,5 and about 110 pounds I'm small. I am looking for all mountain skis that can handle the choppy icy and slush east coast conditions (PA) I like to go fast but am also starting to try the park (small jumps rails and jumps) I also like to hit side hits. I don't know if I should go with 85 or 90-100cm. I am an intermediate-advanced skier but am not very good at park. I have not tried a rail but will be this season. I have been looking into the Armada ARV 94’s but am getting mixed signals. I ride 20% park 80% all mountain. We rarely get power so not an issue. I have been seeing more recent that the ARV’s are only good for park and are not really all mountain skis. I would like to know if these skis can handle the east coast mountain or only parks? Do these skis handle high speeds well because I do like to go fast? And based on my personal stats where should I mount them. Anything helps please comment and help me thanks.🙏

Hostel in between Burlington and Stowe? Or next best thing

My buddy and I are planning a trip up to Stowe this winter and have some friends in UVM we want to visit. Is there a place you guys know to stay in between those two areas for a decent price? If theres nothing that fits that exactly then just a hostel less than 45 min or an hour from Stowe if fine

Second ski for the quiver?

Looking to add a ski to the quiver. I've been super happy with my 2019 Volkl Deacon 76s, which are great for the vast majority of ice coast days. Sometimes, though, we actually get a few inches of snow. Or we head farther North and find the trees and bumps. My snowboarding son often likes getting into the trees, and the Deacons are pretty far from ideal for that. Coming from a racing background my primary focus is speed, edge hold, and carving ability, but I'm thinking a second, wider ski (something i'm really unfamiliar with) would be a worthwhile purchase in order to take advantage of other conditions when they happen to present themselves. But how wide do I need to go? Don't want to lose the groomer fun, but want some versatility for those freshies and bumps.

My first thought was the Deacon 84, but is that even enough of an increase to make a difference? Elan Wingman 86, Stockli Stormrider 88?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Climbing Mansfield This weekend

Should I expect to be able to climb mansfield this weekend? Was hoping to take the long trail south bound up to the peak and then traverse the ridge line to take hazleton back down. Do y'all think I should be able to park at stowe without any issues? I know winter season hasn't started yet but I don't know if they already are starting on snowmaking or other preseason work.

avy gear for VT bc

how many of you guys are really carrying beacons for bc laps in the trees of northern VT especially lower angle stuff? couldn’t find a ton of threads on it of course you should have b/p/s but i kinda doubt most people messing around in the woods up here are carrying one.

i’m not talking about skiing mansfield or gully lines in the notch just woods not exposed avy terrain.

i understand almost anything can slide and am not looking for a “if you have to ask” answer here- just genuinely curious. i understand we are playing with life and death here and avy gear is worth the purchase!

It's that time again... Check out my ski club in NH! We've got some meetups and things coming soon.

With flakes falling and snow guns being put through their paces all over the northeast, it's probably time for my annual "would you like to join a ski club?" post! My club, the Brettl-Hupfers Ski Club, operates a lodge in the Mount Washington valley, surrounded by places to ski. If you are interested in an extremely affordable way to access the mountains, and meet a lot of great people who also love to ski, ride, hike, snowshoe, bike, fish, paddle, etc., etc., keep reading!

**********

Before getting into the nitty-gritty, please note that we have a couple of opportunities to meet some of the people and learn more in the coming weeks:

  1. If you are in the Boston area, a bunch of us will be attending the Warren Miller screening at the Somerville theater on Nov 7. We'll be hanging out at the Elm Street Taproom, just up the street from the theater, before and after the show. We'll be easy to spot! This is always an excellent time to do a quick vibe check if you're reluctant to commit to driving all the way to Northern NH to check us out.
  2. Several of us will be at the BSSC Blizzard event on Nov 14. Hit me up if you want to connect!
  3. Also, we plan to do a little apres meet and greet at Tuckerman Brewery in Conway NH on Dec 7, beginning around 4pm. If you find yourself in the area catching some early season laps, please come look for us! We will likely be doing an open-house at the club the following day on an invite-only basis.

**********

So what is this thing, exactly?

We operate a clubhouse located just outside North Conway, NH. Membership is only $500/year, which gets you a permanent bunk in our dormitory style lodging, and 24/7/365 access to the house. Members have access to a fully equipped kitchen, great social space, and access to the legendary New Hampshire ski club apres scene. It's also an awesome resource if you're into summer sports like hiking, kayaking, and mountain biking.

Shoot me a DM, and I'll share some more resources with you, like a little presentation with a bunch of info and photos.

**********

And now the details.

WHERE CAN YOU SKI?

There are 5 ski mountains within 30 minutes of the clubhouse, and another 3 within about an hour. In order of proximity, they are:

Attitash

Cranmore

Black Mountain

Wildcat

Bretton Woods

Cannon Mountain

Pleasant Mountain

Loon

Sunday River

We are part of a larger organization of about 20 clubs in the greater Mt. Washington area. This group organizes a yearly trip to Jay Peak, and a yearly Europe trip, both of which are great values.

ANYTHING ELSE TO DO?

The club also offers a great social scene. The clubs in the group are always throwing events, making plans, and generally having a great time. We know how to party ;)

While skiing and snowboarding are the main draw, there is world class hiking, kayaking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, rock climbing, snowmobiling, mountain biking, swimming holes and more in the immediate area. I'm up at the club almost as often in the "off" season as I am in the winter.

Oh! There's also a race team if that's your jam.

WHAT DO MEMBERS GET?

We encourage people to come stay with us a couple times before considering joining, but if you do end up joining, membership gets you a key for 24/7 access, and your own permanent bunk. Bedrooms are divided into men's, women's, and gender neutral, and usually contain 4-6 bunks. Most of the time the place isn't full, so you usually will only have a couple roommates. Members can store their gear at the club if they wish.

WHO ARE THE MEMBERS?

We are skiers and snowboarders ranging from relative beginners to PSIA certified experts. We like the outdoors. We like hanging out by the fire. We like heading to the bar and relaxing after a day on the slopes. We are low key, but we throw a mean party from time to time. We're non-judgmental and easy to get along with. We like meeting people. We are a team.

ANYTHING ELSE?

Overall, the club is an unreal value. If you pay for lodging at hotels or AirBnBs, you'll spend $500 in only a few nights. Even hostels can rack up quickly. Why not have a place to stay literally whenever you want instead? It also allows you to hit the slopes for first chair, since if you come up the night before you ski, you'll already be at the mountain.

Anyway, all that aside, I just really love the people there. It's become a cornerstone of my social life, and something I've become very attached to in only a few short years. The people are great, the atmosphere is great, and I'd probably still be a member even if I didn't ski!

HOW CAN I FIND OUT MORE?

I'm slightly hesitant to post the club email address here online, so if you'd like to hear a little more, **just leave a comment or send me a DM and I'll get in touch**. If you decide you'd like to check us out, I'll tell you about our big season kickoff weekend in December, and you can come up either then or some other time as a guest.

21+ only please.

TLDR: If you're interested in having unlimited access to a great ski club in the White Mountains that's only $500 a year, shoot me a message or leave a comment.

Bolton Valley-like ski mountain recommendations?

I am looking for a place like Bolton. We love Bolton — but it’s 8 hours away (we are in PA). It sounds silly but we’ll drive 6 hours.

Our son is an excellent skier. We, his parents, are greens and blues. We want to ski together. We plan to avoid holiday weekends and like quieter mountains. Any recs on the East coast?

Looking to buy my wife skis

Looking for a decent pair that won't break the bank. Previous year models are fine. She can ski most blacks in new England. She currently has an old pair of k2 free luv. Time for an upgrade that will last years to come. I snowboard so don't know much when it comes to skis.

Ski VT 4 Passes for sale

UPDATE: SOLD

I have five Ski VT 4 passes for sale.

I lucked out and bought them when they dropped a few weeks ago but we ended up going Ikon instead. I'm selling one to a friend, so I've got five left to sell, and would prefer to sell to someone who will take all five (makes my life easier). I selected the gift card option at checkout so I can just forward you the code and you can register the passes under your name.

Selling them at cost, and I live in NYC, so with the sales tax I paid it comes out to $210.94 per pass and $1054.7 for the lot of five. Pls comment/DM if interested. Happy trails!

What’s in everyone’s quiver for this season?

As the nights get colder, resorts are starting to make snow, and we get closer to getting after it, what’s are you all skiing this upcoming season?

Getting both sets of twigs mounted soon, but I’m looking forward to spending time with both my Unleashed 98 (180) and Revolt 104 (180).

carpools/shares

Hello, is there a good place to look for carpools or house shares?

located in central ma and impulsively decided to get back into riding this season after a really long time so I am trying to get everything in order. I have epic and indy and am looking at mostly weekend day trips but open to a full weekend or two. I would love to not do the drive every weekend by myself lol I also have a night pass to wachusett but Im pretty close. It’s been a while so I probably won’t be keeping up with anyone for a bit but am definitely down to split gas and meet for a beer at lunch. I joined a couple of groups on meet up just didn’t know if there was someplace else.

Stowe on Thanksgiving Weekend

Planning a trip to Stowe for the Thanksgiving weekend. Based on previous years, how much of Stowe runs are open around that time?
As an Epic Pass holder I am blacked out for that Saturday, so I just have that Sunday to ride. Not sure I want to drop any more dollars to Vail. So I am evaluating my options. Any thoughts on Sugarbush or Jay?

Just got the Indy+ pass. Where to go in NE?

I'm based in the NEK. Jay and Burke are my locals. I figured 2 days at Jay, 2 at Cannon and 2 at Bolton and it's paid for itself. I'm not familiar with most of the others. Where else should I try to hit this season?
