Can someone educate me on the International responsibility besides the education center, training.
I was told each local has their own bylaws (rules) to follow. So was just wondering if this is true and what else they do..
I’m trying to make a decision on how I want to continue my career path. Currently I’m 23y/o with a trade school degree in diesel technology and Heavy Equipment repair. I’ve worked in construction for a year in a non union shop. I eventually have moved on and work in a dealership as a lead medium duty tech and have been doing it for 2 years and make 30 an hour. I miss working and operating heavy equipment and want to get into mining/earth moving equipment and I’ve been told to join the local 18. Will the experience and training I already have put me ahead and give me a better starting wage than other apprentices? Looking at how I won’t get paid for my training and how my local pay sheet shows a lower hourly rate than what I currently make has me very on the fence especially with the bills I currently have (lots of debt from being ignorant with a high paying job at a young age) The main response I’m looking for is will my career progress completely reset to me being the inexperienced, and underpaid tech because I went to trade school instead of a union based school, or will my previous experience put me ahead and give me a better start than those who are getting into the apprenticeship with 0 experience.
What's the deal with the beef.
Hey all I apologize if this gets too long and I also apologize in advance for my grammar mistakes that I will inevitably make.
I am a 28 year old man currently I work for the WVDOT as an equipment operator 3. I have been there for almost 8 years and make $22.71 / HR. With experience, and training on multiple pieces of equipment which include the following. Single, tandem, tri, and quad axle dump trucks Tractor trailer Tack truck Concrete mixer truck Roll off truck Water truck Bucket truck Skid steer Front end loader Single drum roller Dual drum roller Road widener Boom mower Flail mower Broom tractor Dozer Backhoe loader Excavator
I have a certification card through the union already for our training on the backhoe which I don’t know if it amounts to anything in the union or not but I will attach a picture on this post. Currently I’m getting trained on how to operate the motor grader and going to get my certification for that eventually. I have decided that If I were to leave that I would stick it out until I got my grader card.
Over all I love my job but it frankly doesn’t pay worth a shit and my girlfriend and I are barely making it to pay our bills. The insurance gets raised anytime we get a raise and I’m about sick of not being able to afford anything besides bills. She is in the pipe fitters union local 495 but as all union work goes it’s up and down.
Over all I guess what I’m trying to ask is this.
Would it in your guys opinion be worth it to go work for the IUOE?
What kind of benefits are there?
What is the starting rate?
How steady is the work?
Will I have any kind of home life?
Is there any sick or vacation pay?
Thank you in advance!
I need better tp for my bung hole
Provisional list found on
Mandated quarterly reports
OPEN MOST RECENT AND SCROLL FOR OILER…not many?
Probably inaccurate as they don’t report honestly
So I’m at 1,991 hours as a permit holder( never went ASIP route, just got hired into a union job) before I was let go. I have had one job interview but they wanted more experience. Understandable.
My question is, is there anyway to get those last 9 measly hours so I can get my card while waiting for hopefully another job? I’d love to go train but haven’t gotten a solid answer about if I can or not since I’m just a permit holder and waiting on office to call me back.
Thanks!
Hey y’all, I’ve commented on a few posts since I’ve been in the group but I received my call out for local 12 Arizona. I start my indoctrination class in November and was curious if anyone that had been through the apprenticeship has any tips or any insight to what there apprenticeship was/is like. I also am curious about the indoctrination class, like what we do during it and how much class time vs time operating equipment(if any)
Thanks and I’ll try to answer any questions as well if anyone has any.
Just to kinda clear up the biggest questions I was on the list for about 9 months with 6 of them being number 1 and the last 3 being number 2 on the list. I scored a 334/400(or around there)
Hey everyone, got a question about the Oiler rate.
The job posting lists it at $59.75/hr.
Looking at their contract with the city, it says this year its $67.25 and going up to $69.44 on March 1st 2025. Can anyone clear this up for me?
Thanks in advance
Got an 80 how likely am I to get a call?
I applied and took the written test early August 2024.
I did the in person interview Oct 8th 2024.
I just got a letter yesterday Oct 20th 2024 that my score was 320/400. And I am being put on a list for the next available spot for the indoctrination class.
I have no experience in all this, I'm just going with the flow of things. I just wanted to give any new guys looking for an insight on timelines some help since I was looking for this kind of info when I was looking to apply.
If any of you know what I should prepare for next, I'd appreciate it any information.
Also I mentioned local 12 and local 428 together since it is my understanding that they are merging.
Remember to just keep calm and do the best you can that's all.
List is out and available for viewing here: https://data.cityofnewyork.us/widgets/vx8i-nprf
Go to the search bar and type in oiler or you name and hit search. Good luck.
So the oilers exam 3101 is officially established.
Call DCAS AT (212) 669-1357 and Press 0 to speak to a rep & see your status.
BUT has anybody failed and got points added? I was under the impression that some questions were to be thrown out but so far it seems everyone’s score has stayed the same since day of the test.
Please feel free to add as some of us are just looking for some hope.
Any new apprentices I have a question. I just got ranked on the list after my interview and was told I received the highest score. How long after your interviewed and got ranked did it take you to receive your call? I know everything varies on your local but even a rough estimate would help.
Hey all,
I spoke on the phone with someone at the union a few weeks ago and had a great, lengthy conversation, but I'm hoping to get some more info from people that have already gone through this
The application process opens up sometime at the end of the year/beginning of the new year. I'm really hoping I can get involved with this trade. My background is in mechanical work but not with equipment, much less automotive. I have five years of University level school but no degree.
I really just want to know to know what the timeline for this stuff is, and what I can do to have a better chance at getting in.
I understand it begins with applications, then interviews, then a 3-day skills test. I'm a charismatic guy that's detail oriented and strives to live a life of honesty and accountability as those have been the core of my alcoholism recovery path for a couple of years now. I'm fairly confident I can express my personal drive and integrity fairly well, but that's all I feel like I have to show. Considering there are applicants from so many other trades with more applicable experience, I'm nervous I won't stack up.
My plan was to get my CDL-A over the next couple of months, but looking at the course schedules around me, I won't be able to swing it with my work schedule. I do have a CDL learners permit, however (not saying much, I know).
What else can I do in the next few months to become the best candidate I can be? And if I do get the interview and pass that, what's the timeline for getting into any work?
Thanks in advance for any advice!
So I have been driving a semi for a year and realized im getting f’d working 70 hours a week with no OT pay. Tragic. I went to my local operators union and the first question they asked me was if I had my CDL. They seemed extremely interested in the fact that I have class a experience and said that would give me a leg up in the union I told them how much I make and they said we pay more than that. I just wanted to know if making a jump from my job to the iuoe would be a huge improvement as I know the grass ain’t always greener. Just wanted some info about how it is starting out there and if they pay apprentices more or equal to 1800 before tax with less hours. That would be crazy improvement for me. Willing to work my ass off so just want some insight.
Hey all, I’m a journeyman mechanic in local 302. Currently in WA. Was curious if any one works or knows if there is work in southeast Alaska? Iv heard there is a ton in anchorage and Fairbanks. My wife and I planning a move this spring, work will play a huge roll in where we land. I know there is a hall in Juneau, we are currently 8 months out give or take. Appreciate any advice
I’m interested in joining local 324 but I have zero construction experience, any tips or recommendations of what I can do to make my chances better
Hey everyone, would really appreciate some input here. I am currently employed as an "assistant" (my county doesn't have an apprentice program) for the stationary engineers for my county. I have my EPA 608 universal, and have completed HVAC-R 1 and 2 through IUOE Local 39. I have been working this position for 4 years now, have learned a ton, and have been working on my own for 2 years now. I even have been assigned some outlying buildings. But I Still do a ton of work with the Engineers so I get a ton of hands on experience. My supervisor has already said he would hire me as an engineer if a position were to open because he knows how I work and knows I'm capable. However, we have a very young crew, and there aren't signs of anybody leaving anytime soon.
My question is this. Do I stand a chance at applying to other Stationary engineer positions. Whether public or private sector. I never did an apprentice program, but have taken some Union classes. I Have my 608 and plenty of know how with the equipment the big boys work on. I technically haven't held the stationary engineer position. So do i even bother applying to the "entry" level stationary engineer positions that still require 2 years of experience as an Engineer?
I really don't have time financially, to go through an apprentice program for another 4 years through the union, and that's if I even get in.
what should I do?
Hey everyone. I finally got my interview for the apprenticeship for the local 18 here in ohio. Any tips for the interview? I want this so bad. My cousin is a member and I see how this changed his and his families life. I want to make this a my career. Any pointers are appreciated! Thank you
So I have my Entrance exam test coming up on the 19th of October
I wasn't able to go to that study day they had due to work
I'm curious to know what was said and what should I do and how long the test is going to be or how many questions are there and if I should only do questions I know and don't do one's I can't etc?
I'm assuming their going to give paper so we can write out the problems
I know we can't use a calculator to
I preferably would like people that went through the Apprenticeship to answer these since they went through what I'm trying to go through
Hey everyone! I spoke with my local (465) about possibly joining the IUOE as a mechanic but the training director wasn’t available for questions so I wanted to ask how it works for mechanics that aren’t in a shop? Do you work as a field tech for contractors? Any info is appreciated!
Ive been thinking about being a diesel/heavy euipmeny mech for a while now. Ive always enjoyed working on my cars when I need to replace items or humvees while i was in the military. (Not a mech in the military just got licensed to drive and helped work em) Im curios if the IUOE is a good route to scratch that itch or if there is somewhere else better to go? Links, pay scales, etc would be extremely helpful and I would be grateful. The closest one to me is local 312 but no website for it.
Just heard from reliable source, Oiler list being published mid-October and The filing for new exam is going to be postponed till January
I just got a call for an interview for 399 I am a carpenter that makes 32 an hour No pension just 401 and good health benefits
I’m wondering about the pay and benefits if I jump ship especially during apprenticeship If you can please tell me about job security Would it be worth it
Does anyone know when Local 30 (NYC) will start recruiting?
