Gym Recommendations

I'm moving to Huntington in January and I train for Powerlifting meets. I'm wonder if anyone here knows of a gym that has more equipment geared towards powerlifting ie. specialty bars, chains ect. I see a lot of crossfire gyms around but I really don't want to have to go around getting day passes till I find one that suits.

I'm the Author of a True Crime Book on Appalachia's "Pill Mill Killer" and I’ll Be at Cicada Books in Huntington Tomorrow Night [Thursday, October 3rd].

Hi, Huntington-area folks!

I'm a journalist who spent a decade reporting on one of the tri-state area's most notorious pill mill doctors: Paul Volkman, who is currently serving four consecutive life terms in prison.

Volkman worked in pain clinics in Portsmouth and Chillicothe, Ohio between 2003 and 2006 before he was shut down. Prosecutors charged him with drug-dealing that resulted in the deaths of more than ten patients. Many of Volkman's deceased patients lived across the Ohio River in Kentucky. And his trial included testimony from a pharmacist from West Virginia.

My book about Volkman's case -- Prescription for Pain: How a Once-Promising Doctor Became the 'Pill Mill Killer' -- was released earlier this year. The Columbus Dispatch has called it a "riveting true-crime page-turner." And I was recently a guest on "The Last Podcast on the Left."

Tomorrow night — Thursday, October 3 — I'll be talking about the book at Cicada Books in Huntington at 6:30 p.m. I’d love to see you there, and if you can’t make it, I’d be happy to answer questions about the book here!

Anybody know what’s planned to be built on Harvey Road?

Right before the intersection of Harvey Road and Memorial Boulevard, on the side of the creek opposite the walking path, the land has been cleared recently. Anyone know what’s going on there? Always assumed the park owned that, but GIS says it belongs to an investment company.

Women's Rights Rally and Disaster Relief for Hurricane Helene

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -On Friday, October 4th, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, several hundred concerned citizens and supporters of reproductive rights will gather at the Cabell County Courthouse for a Women's Reproductive Rights Rally and March! The event will bring together pro-freedom candidates and community leaders to speak out against West Virginia’s near-total abortion ban.The rally will feature speakers such as Glenn Elliott for Senate, Teresa Toriseva for Attorney General, Amanda Beach-Burge For WV House District 23, Billy Wray for WV House of Delegates District 24, Jennifer Wheeler for Mayor, Gina Milum for WV House of Delegates District 27, and several city council candidates: Sasha Chapman, Sarah Walling, Tia \"Fix\" Rumbaugh, and Ally Layman (speaking for Huntington Pride). Non-candidate speakers include Robin Cutlip, Executive Director of Women's March West Virginia, Francesca Bessey of WV FREE Action Fund, and Josh Keck who will discuss his lawsuit challenging the 2018 “No Constitutional Right to Abortion” Amendment during the event (a separate press release will follow after the filing of this action in Cabell County Circuit Court on Friday). We are also asking attendees and the community at large to support disaster relief efforts in response to Hurricane Helene. The Cabell County Democratic Headquarters, located directly across the street from the courthouse, will serve as a collection point for much-needed supplies throughout the week and during the rally. Attendees are encouraged to bring items such as diapers, baby formula, feminine hygiene products, bottled water, and other essentials. A full list of needed supplies is available on our Facebook page and at the headquarters, which will be open for drop-offs Monday through Thursday from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM, with extended hours from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM on Friday. Volunteers will be loading trucks with supplies on Saturday, October 5th, for delivery to the hardest-hit areas.

How's your power sitch?

I know there are a ton of outages. Is yours out? Back on? If it's been restored, what area are you in? AEP says Monday at 11:00 for us. Hopefully that isn't the case, but I'm sure the crews are hard at it.

Everyone stay safe out there 🫡

Advice Needed: Should I Apply to Other Universities Despite Admission to Marshall?

Hello everyone,

I’m an international student and I recently received an offer of admission from Marshall University for a Master’s in Health Informatics. I’m really happy and grateful for this opportunity, but I’m still considering whether I should apply to other universities like IUPUI, UT Health Houston, and the University of Minnesota.

My concerns are:

  1. Visa Rejection Risk: I’m worried that attending a university with a lower rank or high acceptance rate might increase the chances of visa rejection. Does choosing a higher-ranked university improve visa approval chances? Also, Huntington is a smaller city compared to larger cities in the USA like Houston. Could this impact my visa prospects?

  2. Research Opportunities: I want to make sure I have access to good research opportunities during my program. How do the research facilities and support at Marshall compare to those at the other universities I’m considering?

  3. Tuition and Financial Aid: The fees seem to be quite similar across these universities. Are there significant differences in terms of scholarships, assistantships, or financial aid that could influence my decision?

  4. Curriculum and Faculty: How does the curriculum and the standard of professors at Marshall University compare to the other options I’m considering?

  5. CAHIIM Accreditation: Only a few universities have CAHIIM accreditation( to ensure the standards of the health informatics program) for Msc Health Informatics programs, and Marshall University is the only CAHIIM-accredited program in West Virginia. How important is this accreditation in terms of job opportunities and overall program quality?

https://www.cahiim.org/programs/program-directory/

I would greatly appreciate any advice or experiences from current students or alumni, especially international students who have been in a similar situation. Your guidance would be very helpful.

Thank you!

Landlords putting political signs in rental property yards

My landlord put a political sign for a candidate I would never vote for in front of my house, without my permission, and it looks like I put it there. This is not the first time this has happened to me while renting from Huntington landlords, and driving around it makes me wonder if this particular candidate actually has as much support as the yard signs make it seem. I know a couple landlord who plant signs at all their properties.

Besides the fact that I find political yard signs to be a tacky eyesore, I don't wish to be associated with particular candidates. And because I'm fairly passive (and busy with other things, to be frank) I'm not really looking to get on bad terms with my landlord so I likely won't open a conversation about removing it with him.

I just wanted to point out that this is probably skewing the optics for the upcoming election, and it's quite the move to just assume tenets are just cool with whatever. Landlords gonna landlord!

SOS marshall student

is there anyone who would be willinging give me their student login to reserve stuy rooms?

I am a resident at the VA, and not a marshall student or affiliated but am studying for boards. I studied during the summer at the library in study rooms which was easier due to less people. However, I dont want to set up shop in a room then have to pack up mid way into the zone due to someone with a reservation bc then its over (shoutout ADHD).

Also--log in for the wifi bc my guest/device net will not stay connected. :(

Study spots around town are slim, unfortunately and library is the only place I can be miserable and focused at the same time.

Howdy folks,

I'm looking to put together a small group to play One Page Rules Grimdark (it's like Warhammer 40k without the pricetag). Is there anyone out there that would be interested?

Thanks.

HACKS Experimental Sound Series #9

Hello everyone! We have been planning out Sound Series #9 for a while and it is coming up in 2 weeks. Bark Culture will be performing at the WV building in Huntington for another evening of DIY music. They are a contemporary jazz trio who have just put out a record this september and are stopping in Huntington on a great tour.I'll be opening the sets as part of Big Ugly. Big Ugly is a two-person improv trio who combine drone and rough textures through the creative use of chimes, cello, 12-string guitar, whistles, etc. In the style of Pelt. After the performances all are invited for a free-form jam so feel free to bring an instrument. Details on the poster.

Does anyone play racquetball anymore or is everyone pickled?

I recently re-joined the Y and have been playing RB a couple times a week. Three courts, some of the best I’ve been in (military life)—good lighting, comfortable room temp, freshly painted floors and walls (I just love the dark-academia aesthetic of the entire bldg). If you play, you know what I mean; it enhances the playing experience. But, I haven’t seen anyone else using the RB courts. It may just be a matter of timing but I do wonder if there is anyone out there who is still using them regularly.

I played pickleball two years ago and really enjoyed it. I even had a personal trainer. But I’m 5’10 and my knees couldn’t take it anymore.🤗

Where can I find a scanner?

Hello everyone!

I am teaching online this semester and needed to scan a few things for my students. I am not super familiar with the resources in Huntington but would anyone happen to know where I could access a scanner? I unfortunately need better quality than what I can do at home with my phone. I would of course be willing to pay but if anyone knows a place where I could use a scanner for free, I'd be grateful!

Shoe store recommendations?

I’m looking for recommendations for shoe stores in the area. I’ve googled shoe stores and it seems like the normal “chain store” results. I’m looking for a store that has lots of quality choices for sneakers, boots, work boots, slippers, etc. Basically a store that specializes in multiple shoes. Not looking for just athletic shoes or work shoes. I’m new to the area and I used to go to a store called Rogan shoes which is popular in northern Midwest and they literally had any type of shoe you could think of cheap and expensive. All around good for anyone.
