I'm looking for work from 5 to 12am and I've been thinking about joining up with a towing outfit or a triple a. I've got my CDL. I want to keep my 9 to 5 phone customer service job and moonlight. Does anyone know if these guys are accommodating for and hiring these hours? Also what is the best online school or training for towing and general roadside service?
I have been in the towing industry for two years now, i absolutely love it, but my company won't buy a heavy
just medium duty's & lights, the company has grown to be stagnant owner not really picking up new contracts seems to be digging themselves a bit of a hole & am half debating if it would be worth the Risk to buy a heavy truck myself & be a owner operator for the company while drumming up my own business.... How hard of an industry is it to drum up heavy work ?? In British Columbia, Canada Area....
New or Used for Truck ? best trucks & wrecker models ?? straight stick or rotator ? everybody loves a rotator but too much Risk ? or more opportunity ?
Just starting out into the heavy side, what sockets should I be getting for dropping drive shafts with my 1/2 impact
Not getting enough work through auto clubs and my google ads haven’t a been working up to this point. Any advice or can anyone point me in the right direction with a company that can help?
How do you handle communication between drivers? We currently use phones but it feels very taxing. I'm interested in switching to radios but want to use one with very long range. Any suggestions?
I need to have a vehicle I owned towed from street parking to a friend’s driveway. The ignition currently doesn’t turn over, hence the tow.
Are tow trucks able to back their tow into a driveway? I know nothing about towing logistics and if that’s possible.
Thanks
I'm a professional programmer and ameteur inventor. I want to build a device that detects a hook in progress (likely using an accelerometer) and notifies the car's owner. The idea is to give the owner time to rush to the scene to interrupt the tow and move their car voluntarily.
I'm looking for methods to buy time. Anything you could imagine. What would slow a towman down?
If the car's engine started suddenly, would that give you pause?
If you couldn't contact the local PD to report the tow, would that put a wrench in things?
If the car is painted magenta, does that slow down the towing process?
Any outlandish ideas you've got, I want to hear.
Was towing my boat/trailer when my right wheel slid off halfway into a ditch. Called my insurance and the tow company assigned said this was a recovery and insurance wouldn’t cover.
Just curious if 2k is a reasonable cost for recovery. They brought out 2 trucks and took them about 90 minutes to get it out. Also wanted 500 to tow it back to my place which is about 30 minutes / 20 miles
One truck was strapped towards the front of trailer for safety and the other pulled the back of the trailer- a flatbed and a regular tow truck. Was able to drive it back home with no damage.
Now trying to figure out how neither my boat insurance / car insurance and boat tow insurance will cover it
I just started as a towing company dispatcher. How in the world do I know who to dispatcher to where? This company is so disorganized they make us wake up tow truck drivers etc. They don't tell us which truck drivers go to what cities or when certain truck drivers have a day off. I'm only one week in and the office cattiness from the other women is insane. I really need this job as I have a mortgage and kids to support but it's making it hard to want to stay when it's nearly impossible to ask questions when I'm becoming the laughing stock of the company and not being trained properly?
If the combined weight of truck and car are under 26000lbs not requiring a CDL are you required to have a valid DOT Medical Card.? Started a job very recently and I was only given a drug screen and background check and that was it. This company is a AAA contractor in the Missouri area. They use F350 Super Duty trucks some are diesel and some are gas. They both use flatbeds and traditional tow trucks. I don’t want to be driving for this company if they are breaking the law in any way. Apart from the fact they hold employees liable for any driver caused damages and deduct pay accordingly and also charge employees 200% if a driver forgets to collect a co pay.
I'm a diesel mechanic. We occasionally run into the issue where dot or whoever puts a unit out of service for say cracked brake lining. Why is a wrecker allowed to tow that unit, but a tractor isn't allowed to pull it anymore?
Like why isn't it out of service to the point that the repair needs to be done on site? Am I missing something? Seems like a waste of money to have a unit towed that a truck could still pull.
Is the stopping power of a wrecker that significant? Those things are huge so that's the only thing I can think of. It can still full control it.
Hey, I'm new to towing but have a chance to take over a company. Probably tough to answer since trucks are different but does anyone have an idea of what % gross should be reserved for yearly repair/maint ...a rule of thumb?
Flying tire hit rental car- nearest rental location is 4 hours away
I rented a car in North Carolina through a company called Sixt, and drove it 4 hours away to South Carolina with my family. A flying tire flew over the median of the highway and bounced into the front of my car. I didn’t see where it came from and we hit the tire so hard that I don’t know where it went. The police came and filed a FR-10 form. I also took some photos of the accident scene. The front headlight is not working, none of the car’s cameras are working, and the seatbelts are all locked in place.
I didn’t purchase additional insurance coverage through Sixt. However, the car is insured through my own auto insurance. Sixt told me that they can’t come and tow it or send a replacement, because their nearest location is 4 hours away. They told me to go to Pep Boys and get it repaired myself, so I can drive it back 4 hours to give to them.
My question is, is that a smart idea? I’m scared that the rental car company will come back and say the repairs aren’t up to their standards etc… or that I’m going to be out of an exorbitant amount of money even though this accident was not at fault. I also don’t know if a police report was filed- all i have is the FR-10 form. So I guess I need to get it towed back to Sixt. Does anyone know a ballpark of how much this would cost? I would have to pay out of pocket.
Any open remote dispatcher positions available? I have 4 years of experience Please leave an email I can send my resume to thank you!
Starting a new job at a AAA contracted tow company. They don’t do anything outside of AAA currently. The position is hourly starting at $18. My major concern is this company holds employees liable for any damages if the owner deems its the operators fault. Is this a common policy for any tow company regardless if they work with AAA or not. Also some shifts exceed 12hrs as they don’t have set lunch or break periods and just count any down time between calls as a break but you are still payed for that time. I want to hear any thoughts or concerns about this.
Need help with the bed and the mechanicl/hydraulic problems with it can someone help please?
My Hyundai got stolen when I was out of town visiting a friend. They found it and said I could grab it from the city impound lot. But apparently with stolen kias/hyundai you’re required to get a tow, you can’t drive it out.
I called my insurance (Progressive). They insisted that I’d have to personally book a tow truck and they would reimburse because their service would take months. They gave me a dealer to call.
I drove back to the impound from out of town. And booked a tow. An hour later the driver calls me, saying the service has been cancelled and they’re not allowed to provide service in and out of the impound lot.
I ask the impound employees who I can use. They gave me someone and I got my car back home.
Now, weeks later, I’ve received a charge on my card from that canceled tow which was AAA through that dealership. I disputed the charge. But AAA is coming back with a Receipt for Service for this tow I never received.
There’s no recorded VIN # or Odometer reading on this receipt, and the impound lot would have no record of this tow.
But I feel like I’m SOL because there’s no documentation that it was cancelled. Any advice?
I had my car towed recently from a lot that requires a parking decal, which I didn’t realize when I parked there. When I went to retrieve it, I noticed a few things that seemed a bit off. My e-brake was on when I parked, but when I retrieved my car, the driver’s seat was moved forward, and the seatbelt was looped around the steering wheel. This leads me to believe that the towing company may have entered my car to disengage the emergency brake, potentially to avoid using a flatbed or dollies.
Here’s the part that really puzzles me: my mirrors were still folded in when I picked up the car. With my car, the mirrors only fold in when I lock it with the key fob. If the door lock is used, the mirrors stay open. So, if they got inside to disengage the e-brake, unlocking it would’ve unfolded the mirrors. How would they manage to unlock the car, disable the brake, and then relock it with the mirrors folded in?
On top of that, I noticed some scratch marks near the seam and the paint on the interior of the front passenger door. Is it even legal for them to enter the vehicle like this, and if so, is it normal practice to handle a car this way? Any insight would be appreciated—thanks!
Hello, so let me preface this with I don’t know anything about towing or anything of the nature. My car knowledge is basic, I know how to change fluids, brakes, spark plugs.
I recently bought a Subaru STI that required some work to be done. I used my roadside assistance via insurance to get a tow. They dispatched tow that showed up within 40 minutes. The guy came with the opposite of a flatbed, a wrecker is what I think you call it. They raised up my car got it all hooked up, car was placed into neutral and off it went to the shop.
The shop called and told me they reviewed footage and saw my car being towed as well as a viral local video of car driving on the highway like that. The shop was 30 minutes via highway from pick up location to shop. I was told most likely my transmission is cooked(because my car is AWD).I’ve already told my insurance about it and made sure that they have a log record of my service call to them for roadside.
What are you guys thoughts and opinions, this is all pretty new to me. I’m awaiting a call back now from insurance.
Update 1. So I’m not sure what To do here, should I have the shop pull my trans and document evidence my center diff is indeed screwed? Also I called my insurance they basically said there is nothing they can do. I called the tow truck company and you know they already played the we did nothing wrong card. They even said they tow subi’s like that all the time. Which means RIP to so many cars out there. Lastly I called the partner company my insurance does roadside through and the lady filed a complaint for me. I am expecting customer care to get back to me in 24 hours, she also told me that the system automatically knows what type of tow to get and that when it gave the tow company my request, they were specifically told to bring a flatbed…. So that means they disregarded completely what was told of them by roadside which further shows incompetence and negligence on their part.
I am 26 and have had my CDL since I was 21. I did cross country driving for awhile but wanted to stay local. There is a rather large towing company near me I am thinking about applying to. They also have the big truck wreckers that require a CDL to operate. Do drivers with a CDL make more than ones without?
In regards to the dude whose HOA towed his wife’s company car for expired tags, I’m curious what other companies/states require for the vehicle to be released.
Here in SC my company follows what the highway patrol requires. They’d have to have the registered owner come to the office, or provide a notarized letter from the owner authorizing us to release the vehicle to a person identified in the letter, who would have to appear in the office with their ID.
Because the tags are expired they would either have to provide current registration and the sticker to drive it off the lot, or they would have to pay us to tow it back to their house on top of the impound and storage fees.
Because it’s an impound we require cash, money order, or a cashiers check. No cards, no personal checks, nothing that can be cancelled after they leave the office.
I will say that the more attitude the people have, the less help they get straightening out the red tape.
I recently acquired a low-mileage truck with a virtually new Jerr-Dan 22SRR6T-W-LP Rollback Body. I don’t need the body so I’m considering selling it. Not being in the business I have not idea where to sell it of what it might be worth. Google isn’t coming up with anything obvious, anyone have any suggestions?
Hey everyone. I have a 2014 Jeep Cherokee 3.2 liter V6 with a tow package. I am going to need to use my tow capacity soon for a project and I am just confused about finding the hitch rating. I was told to look for a sticker on the steel hitch attached to the frame, but there is body panels covering most of it. So I checked in the manual and it just says my max weight is 4500lbs. The bar is rated for 5000 and the ball is rated for 6000.
Any help would be great, thanks.
