If your garage door opener motor just whirs and the screw doesn't turn it's likely this $7 piece of plastic.

I need help with front door knobs, lower lock oriented wrong

I just installed new locks. The top is fine, but the bottom is locked when it is sideways, instead of upright. These were a free gift, so I have no idea if it is installed correctly, no instructions, I just followed a Youtube video.

Do I have to buy a different lock set to make the bottom lock on vertical, or did I install it incorrectly?

If I installed it incorrectly, can someone explain to me how to correctly orient it, like I'm 5? The inside has the "top" label on top.

Heat tripping breaker, AC does not

Our HVAC system has an air handler in the attic that is on one breaker, and an outdoor condenser on another. We can run the AC all day with no issues. When we change our thermostat from cool to heat, the heat kicks on, works for about 2-5 minutes, then trips the breaker for the indoor unit turning off our thermostat and, obviously, the heat.

I have changed the filter in the air handler and cleaned the condenser coils on the outdoor unit.

Anyone have any other ideas on what could be the culprit?

Basement Leaking

I realized a couple weeks ago there was a leak in my finished basement. (Previous owners finished it so we know nothing about how it was done). We’ve been gutting the entire thing for over a week now trying to find the leak. We’ve finally centralized the location—water is coming through the cold joint along one wall. The wall is built entirely into the ground so we cannot currently see the foundation without digging it out.

Here’s the problem—we dry the water and then see it coming through rather quickly again. This wall is where the main water line comes into the house. We’ve tried multiple tests to see if perhaps the main line has a leak that is causing what could be mistaken as ground water. We’ve checked the leak gauge on meter—didn’t show a leak. We’ve turned the main line in the house off and it still showed no use on the meter.

Could this really be excessive ground water? We haven’t had rain in over a week and the water is still steadily coming into the crack.

Also outside the house, where the leak is the ground is at the highest point. It starts sloping down from that point and there is no soaking ground or water pooling (at least from what we see above the dirt).

Peel and stick wallpaper

Me and my wife are huge animal lovers, and we found this peel and stick wallpaper on Etsy. I'd never heard of it before, but it seems like a really cool option. We're thinking about putting it in the living room, where our Frenchie's bed is. Not sure if we'd go for this exact color, but there are other more minimalist shades that would fit our interior better. My question is: do you think it would look alright in the living room? Would guests think we're weird when they come over? And from an interior designer's perspective, does it look more like a dog shelter or a grooming salon, haha? We really like the idea, but would love to hear other opinions. Thanks!

How to replace garage lock?

Looking to replace the lock and latch system on this garage door. Our plan is to do a keypad for the rollup door and then a keypad on the interior door as well so if there’s ever an emergency we don’t have to worry about keys and we can give the code to a friend/family member as needed. We got the keypad stuff we need but what do I do about the actual physical lock? We don’t want to keep it since we’re not sure who has keys but we don’t intend to access the garage this way. I thought about just ripping the mechanism out and replacing with a regular handle and bondo -ing the holes shut but ik it’ll look like shit. Do I have to just shell out the 40 bucks for a lock I’ll never actually use?

Toilet only flushes when I pour a half bucket of water into it

Sorry for the dirty toilet…it could be worse. Anyway, my dual-flush toilet (1.6gal per flush) used to work fine, but stopped flushing properly. Now I need to pour a half bucket of water forcefully into it to get it to flush, meaning to empty. The tank flush mechanism itself seems to work fine using either button, but it just doesn’t drain the bowl - it just swirls around. I tried a plunger. I swapped out the dual flush valve mechanism. It’s sort of a low flow toilet at only 1.6 gal/flush, but it used to work. Could there be sh$t stuck further down in the toilet? It doesn’t seem so or else it wouldn’t drain with the water I pour in either, right? No such problem with any of my other toilets, one being just on the other side of the wall.

How can I find the water shut-off valves to my shower specifically?

It is not under the sink in the bathroom. I see valves to shut off the toilet and the sink, but not the shower. Some have suggested taking the panel off the wall of the shower and I’ll find the valves inside the wall, but I did that and this is what I see (pictured).

For context, I have a dripping shower and I’m trying to isolate the problem.

Thoughts?

Water leaked out of air vent.

This morning I had water pour out of the overhead air vent and cannot figure out why. The unit has been off for a few years now (we were having issues with it and have just used windows units and space heaters, surprisingly cheaper on the utilities).

I crawled in the attic space, and could not find any source of the leak, leading me to believe it came from inside the duct. It only poured out about a half a cup of water. We are currently in a cold snap of about 20 degree weather.

Any advice or insights? Just a bit of condensation running out?

Is this a live wire?

I was digging around the panel and randomly found this wire on the right. You can mainly see the insulation but there's definitely a tire showing. I checked the little voltage tester and it beeped on it. Is this live? How to remove it?

Gaps in wall and ceiling.

What causes these gaps in the ceiling and wall? There’s several other spots like this throughout the house. (The leak has been fixed)

What is the use for Ethernet outlets?

I have multiple rooms with Ethernet outlets but the living room where the WiFi router is only has the normal (US) outlets and a coax outlet. Is there anyway to utilize these without relocating the entire router?
