"Gunaahon ka Devta" by Dharamvir Bharati discussion thread

Everyone who has read the novel idhar aajao.

I'll start this discussion with a disclaimer: I'm an blackpilled incel, I've never been in love before, and this is the second novel I've ever read in Hindi (after Sharat Chandra's "Path ke Daavedar").

Now, of course I liked the novel. I didn't love it, but I'm happy I read it(?). But it seemed that it requires a much more mature reader than an 18 year old. However, it succeeded in forcing me to read it lol and I read it till the end patiently.

I loved the character of Bertie (which sort of closely characterized my default biases towards the novel's topics). I loved the second half, but felt that it reminded me of Devdas lmaoo (due to the "lover in viraha causing his own downfall" motif in both stories) but of course I could recognise the differences -- what Bharati intended with his characters was something different, nevermind I wasn't able to get it.

Anyways, here are some of my questions:-

  1. What was the relation between Sudha and Chander? From the very start their relation was something along brother-sister bond which then is told to us is not the case.

  2. Why did Sudha not want to marry while at the same time not wanting to marry to Chander while at the same time ultimately killing herself due to the intense grief of separating from Chander?

  3. What exactly made the love between Chander-Sudha something which made Chander say (along the lines of) "I've travelled to the highest of heavens because of your love" or "I feel an inner strength that I'll be able to do anything because of your love" and so on? (Note that I'm paraphrasing this in English, the original thing I read was in Hindi).

  4. Why did Chander at the end agree to marry Binti, even though Binti had already had a... you know... a lover in her village?

  5. The novel implies that Chander destroyed the life of every woman that ever touched him: be it Sudha, Binti or Pammi. But how so? I can only sense a weird idealism in Chander (and a lack of it in the latter half). Nothing much that can destroy people to shreds.

Pardon my ignorance. As I said I'm very imbecilic in these matters. If anyone has read the novel very deeply, and also has faced similar situations in his life, do enlighten me. Thanks.

Focus on the word "language". I want to know what is the scope of this language's use. What is the book that has broadened and blown your mind like "bc ye kaise likhdiya mujhe toh pata hi nahi tha aise bhi Hindi likhi ja sakti hai". Thanks.

Nabokov of Hindi language?

Title. If someone has read Lolita, Speak Memory, Pnin he knows what I'm talking about. Who's the author whose prose is the most similar to Nabokov?

Question on सामान्य भूत and ने-परसर्ग

I'm from Bengal and I've noticed a certain style of speech in casual conversation from a few native Hindi speaking people that live/work here. They mostly don't use the Ergative case (ने-परसर्ग) while describing actions in Simple past (सामान्य भूत) or Recent Past (आसन्न भूत) tenses. Thus they say "तुम पढ़े हो?" instead of "तुमने पढ़ा है?".

My question is, assuming this type of construction is grammatically incorrect, is this common in casual speech in the native Hindi-speaking regions of India?

Examples of one-to-many mappings from English to Hindi?

Hi there! I’m struggling to find examples of words in English that have multiple possible translations in Hindi which must be disambiguated based on the context. For example, the word “sink” in English can commonly be translated to either “fregadero” meaning kitchen sink, or “lavabo” meaning bathroom sink in Spanish. I find these kinds of words super interesting, especially when there are cultural reasons for it :) Sorry if this is the wrong flair, very new to Hindi.

How Do I learn Hindi with as a Marathi Speaker?

I've always been able to speak marathi really easily, and I can read mostly. I also know a bunch of the basic phrases you learn in like your first Hindi lesson, but I wanted to know how I could transition from Marathi to Hindi without starting completely from scratch if you know what I mean.
