A subreddit dedicated to glass Hen on Nest covered dishes, particularly those made by Indiana Glass Company

Welcome to the HenOnNest subreddit!

You see them all the time in antique stores, flea markets, and estate sales! Perhaps you remember them from your grandparents' home. They are glass "Hen on Nest" covered dishes. (Also called "Hen on a Nest", "Nesting Hens," or "HONs.")

These trinkets, used as candy or condiment dishes, were made by dozens of companies for decades. To quote Craig Schenning, author of A Century of Indiana Glass, they are "probably the most prolific glassware item in the history of pressed glassware production."

This subreddit is dedicated to glass Hen on Nest covered dishes. We welcome discussion and pictures of any and all Hen on Nest covered dishes. I personally collect Indiana Glass HONs, so all the content I'll be sharing will be of them--but rest assured: all collectors, admirers, curators, or the curious are welcome here! I only ask that you follow a few simple rules.

Amber vs Marigold in carnival

I've seen a few questions on how they look next to each other. The difference is pretty stark, but it's hard to tell when you see apart

I can’t find much info on this. Seems like the circular base makes it unique?

New and confused. Is there a difference between the Indiana hen on nest iridescent and carnival glass?

I was wondering how many different iridescent/carnival glass colors are available in the Indiana hen on nest. I have seen a seller selling 2 (same colored hens imho but what do I know 🤷) hens on nest but one listed as iridescent and one carnival glass on the same post and if I remember correctly, different in price. Hope it is no offense to anyone, I am just curious. Because I want to collect all the shiny ones 😂 and want to make I don't buy the same ones again and again. Or worse, go looking for them and not finding them.

Can you help me ID this?

Hi, I was hunting for sea glass and came across this beauty. I think it might be from a hen on nest dish (although google lens tells me it might be a banana!). I would appreciate any information you can share. Thanks!

Ozark creations Information

Does any one have any information on the Ozark Creation Indiana hens? I know they were made aftermarket by artist Larry Berry out of Arkansas and are listed in Shirley Smiths book. Since they are painted after market, why do they seem to be worth more, or at least sell for more, than most of the original factory Indianas? They are pretty, but would like to understand why they’re so collectible.

Don’t microwave Hens.

When I was like 21 years old I was thrifting for my first apartment. I found a hen and called it my butter chicken because I’d store butter in it. I had no idea it was collectible but I loved it. It was one of the first adult decor items I had ever bought and I showed it to everyone that came to my house. One day I was drinking wine and cleaning my apartment, and had the bright idea to put the hen in the microwave to melt the butter out of it. The hen exploded.

It’s been more than 10 years and I’m still sad about it. 🤦‍♀️

Searching for Official Colors

I'm starting an official color search. I want to find as many original boxes, item numbers, sales listings, etc.,for the hen on nest from Indiana Glass as possible so we can try to more closely confirm the colors that truly existed. I'm very curious specifically about the amber and peach discrepancies. For example, in the frankly outstanding graphic we have been provided by /u/Indyhen, there are three 'shades' of a sort, of both the amber/gold and pink/peach hens. However, as I've noticed in this picture, this original box has '1829 Gold' on one side, and '1829 Golden Amber' on another. So I'm left wondering did they just refer to one shade as two colors? My search is just beginning.

Bunny on Basket/ Nest

I got my yellow one in yesterday and I have really enjoyed it or the fact that my husband was in and out of the door so many times yesterday afternoon and has still not noticed it lol. I have not decided what order they are going in just yet.

Aftermarket, mismatch?

I've been seeing this in my searches for hens, rabbits and cats. I know the cobalt hen is aftermarket, as well as the cat. This rabbit is confusing because it seems like it's also an aftermarket, only with a mismatch? An 'indiana glass' bottom with am 'LE smith' rabbit top. Am I right or am I missing something? I've seen it several times repeated so it can't just be a one off.

Indiana Glass History

I am so amazed by the world of glass that I had no idea even existed roughly 2-3 weeks ago. I've already grown my hen collection quite a bit because ebay hunting is very fun for me. I've grown interested in the bunnies and sleeping cats (on the same dishes as the hens) that Indiana Glass also made, and I was wondering if anyone out there has anywhere near the amount of info on the colors that were made in those lines. I can only find probably 5 colors or so in each, plus the cobalt aftermarket that I saw someone did post about. Thanks in advance 😁
