Colorado State University Seed Lab

I met with Randy the Lab Manager yesterday and learned several things that I found very interesting. The issue of dormancy is complex and can have a sizable impact on germination tests. They also do a TZ test on non-germinating seeds to determine if they are just dormant or dead.

Important facts for new hemp farmers and how to make sure you pass your state mandated test of under 0.3% THC

My name is Mark and I've been gardening for about 20 years. I've done some intense research and experimentation with cannabis and would be honored to share my findings. Here is how to pass your state mandated THC analysis.

Seeded Cherry Wine, August 2018.

Testing: Order a private THC plant and oil test kit. They are about 5 dollars each if you buy in bulk. https://www.thctestkits.com/ Test your plant starting the first couple weeks of flowering and get to know the rate at which the THC is increasing. Generally in the last month it increases over double. If it was 0.2 THC on day 28 of flowering it would be 0.4 THC on day 56 and if you let it go another week or two it could increase up to 0.5 THC. Seeding reduces resin production. Some experienced growers claim it does not lower THC much but decreases CBD production by 50% so you must still test early if you are seeding. In Wisconsin and many other states the Department of agriculture demands you test at least 30 days before harvest. Don't test a day late if you don't want to risk losing your entire field. Every week test and watch the increase of THC levels carefully. Be sure to schedule an appointment with the Department of Agriculture and make sure they are at your farm testing by the time your private tests reach 0.18 delta-9 THC. By the time they dry the flowers the delta-9 THC level will rise perhaps 20-30% higher than when it was cut so take that into account. In Wisconsin farmers generally test the second or 3rd week of August. After you test you are free to grow your plants up to 1% THC without risk of prosecution according to federal and state law. The state's test of your crop at pre-harvest time must average 0.3% or less overall and at no time may any plant in your field test over 1% THC including dried flower or you have to destroy your entire field according to some state's laws. If you wish to legally sell the extracts of those hemp flowers in some states you must have the THC and CBD separated by a processing facility so that your products will not test over the state limit. Other companies will straight up sell you CBD products with 1% THC in them without blinking an eye. As of late, there have been minimal legal problems in doing this, though I have heard of drug task forces auditing CBD dispensaries on all of their products and lots of interstate shipping seizures. If you want to find a strain with the maximum CBD legally allowed then search for information about the THC:CBD ratios of the CBD hemp strains. 1:20 means you could pull about 6% CBD by the time your plant reaches 0.3 THC while 1:40 would be about 12% CBD by the time it hits the legal limit of THC. Cherry Wine for example reaches 18.8% CBD while testing under 0.3% delta-9 THC. A ratio of over 1:50.

Cultivation: Make sure your soil has good aeration and texture. The soil and care you give your plant could be the difference between a 10 gram harvest or 10 pounds on a single plant depending on how happy those roots are. If you wish to grow CBD hemp like corn the quality will suffer incredibly. Give your plants the love and attention they deserve. Prune the bottom branches that didn't flourish, cut the top off of the plants after a few nodes to increase branching then top the branches again. Flush between every fertilization if not multiple times to correct Electrical Conductivity (EC) level and remove excess salts. Make sure PH levels are proper in your soil for the strain you are growing. Foliar feeding is the practice of spraying the leaves with nutrients to increase uptake and boost yield. For fertilizer there are many options both free and store bought. Some people use bat guano, others use 1 year old cow or horse manure or a mix of various things. I mainly use Fox Farm's brand starting with Grow Big and then ending with Tiger Bloom. I also use Superthrive in microdoses all season long to ensure there is no shortage of micronutrients in the soil. These high-end fertilizers may not be a viable option for larger farms. Adding thousands of ladybugs to your garden early on can help prevent aphids and other pests from thriving and destroying your crop. One grow method that is not common knowledge is called Sonic Bloom, which opens the stomata on the leaves causing increased CO2 consumption and can cause a large increase in harvest weight just by playing bird chirping or violin frequencies for your plants. I will be providing more in depth research on decibel levels and speaker distance in a future post or you can find scientific reports now online.

Harvest: It is good to flush your plants nutrients out with reverse osmosis or distilled water starting 3 weeks before you harvest. Water heavily then let the salts break down for 5 minutes. After the breakdown process is complete water again to flush out all these excess nutrients. Common practice is to harvest in the morning as early as possible because if you harvest later in the day, the sunlight will have drawn up nutrients up into the buds causing the flowers to be more harsh when smoked as well as other scientifically beneficial reasons.Curing: Hang the plant or branches in the dark with sugar leaves removed and provide good air flow. Not too dry or humid. Slow curing is better unless you are using dry ice method which can reduce curing time to only hours. After 1-3 weeks of hanging (depending on flower size and density) put the flowers in paper bags or breathable sacks for 3-5 months. Cannabinoid levels will rise another 20% or more when the stem pushes the last of its resin into the flowers.Summary: CBD hemp flower sells by CBD percentage so you want to test as late as possible while still ensuring you pass. $3.50 to $5 dollars per percentage point per pound is the current rate (March 2019.) So at 4 dollars per percentage point and 20% CBD your outdoor crop would fetch 80 dollars per pound of seedless flower. Greenhouse is higher quality because of more environmental control and fetches a higher price, while indoor is the best and can be sold in retail settings for thousands of dollars per pound. If your outdoor is processed into end products the profitability can rise many times. Phenotypes (slightly different varieties in each strain) and grow conditions have a lot to do with the potency of cannabinoids and terpenes but generally the widely varied test results of each strain are because of this state mandated practice of testing one month before harvest while any professional grower tests their bud when it is fully dried (2 months after state tests) to see accurate end results.

I hope this article helps explain some things to the new farmers out there like why people claim different THC and CBD levels for the same strain. There are dozens of factors involved. I am here to help level the playing field for gardeners and small farmers in search of the best strains and advanced scientific research previously available mainly to larger entities. No minimum order is required to purchase my seeds and all genetics are free to clone, resell and breed. Don't lose the farm to these other breeders who are trying to entangle you in legal contracts or making you over-stock seeds when you only need a few.
