/r/HeavyMetalMagazine
A subreddit for collectors and readers of the world's foremost fantasy illustrated magazine.
First published in 1977, Heavy Metal, the Premier Illustrated Fantasy Magazine, explores fantastic and surrealistic worlds, past present and future. Illustrators from around the world take you to places you never dreamed existed.
Heavy Metal magazine is now probably defunct. This subreddit stays open as an archive, but also to allow conversation about an important historical magazine that was managed into the ground.
As of October 2024 HMM is possibly un-defunct. Time, as always, will show.

Re the below post, the tenor of the responses was generally pretty dismissive, even though the guy wouldn't look out of place in the background of a Ranxerox panel.
But the notion, which seemed to be supported, that Heavy Metal Magazine has nothing to do with heavy metal music, what the fuck is that? Have you read the magazine? It always had music reviews in the 70s, 80s and 90s, the movie is basically an animated rock/metal music video, the visual aesthetics of the magazine were inspired by and in turn inspired the visual aesthetics of metal and punk.....
You can love Heavy Metal Magazine and not be into heavy metal music, but if you think the two have literally "nothing" to do with each other, you're crazy
So, my grandfather passed away a bit ago, and I discovered that he has a crap ton of heavy metal magazines. Was wondering if anyone knew what the market looks like for these or if I should just use them as fire fuel. 😂
Can anybody explain to me the current difference between heavy metal and metal hurlant especially since they both have kickstarters at the same time?
For the last few holdouts that still lurk around this sub, I want to start out by thanking you for still tuning in, still keeping things rad, and super Heavy Metal. That said, I do want to address a few concerns that I am having with the new owners of HMM. We all know how bad the Medney years were. He outright tanked the magazine with his NFT BS he peddled on us. I wanted more than anything for a rebirth of the magazine out of the flaming pile he left behind. If you’ve seen, heard, been part of the email chain that has been promoting a kickstarter campaign for the magazine, you may have read that they are righting the wrongs of the past brass, paying back royalties to contributors, and all around trying get off on the right foot. If that is indeed what they are actually doing behind the scenes (like relaunching a website with literally no new/original content or improvements) then maybe things will get rolling. That said, I sent their new help line hello@heavymetal.com a message two weeks ago. Just like the old admin, it has been completely ignored. I’m just looking to get issue #320 that so many of us were cheated out of. Medney still owes me like $80 in issues sent to me with busted spines because they were folded. It would seem there has been 0% effort on the new owners to make anything right with us subscribers. Have any of you had a positive outcome with the new owners regarding outstanding orders? How about that Ranxerox special? At this point, I wont back the Kickstarter, and neither should you! This is absurd that they are promising to fix the past issues, and still do nothing. I sent another email to them. If they don't respond in a week… Gird thy loins for another juicy post, it wont be pretty. Rant over
I'm looking for an issue where there was a story about a beast who looks like a humaniod lion. He has a woman lover. There were some gore scenes and sex scenes and he looked like he was a king
I think I've asked this before but can't find it on here anymore so I'll ask again... Looking for an issue of Heavy Metal that had a comic in it called "Godkiller" and not that one!
It was titled Godkiller and that's the name of another comic series that's completely unrelated to this issue's comic!
This was from the early to mid-00s when it was published!
The comic was set in a future where somehow all the major world religions have been unquestionably been proven wrong and the main character is a former Catholic priest that is now working as like a private detective and he's addicted to some drug that is like a hallucinogenic gas that comes in like these double barreled syringe pistols you shove up your nose to ingest and the drug itself is customized doses that are based on famous paintings so that when you're on them you're high and are inside said paintings!
The main plot involves said priest/detective being hired to investigate a series of murders of new upcoming religious/cult leaders by a mysterious woman/hermaphrodite whom the main character has some sort of history with!?
The story ends on a downer note with a double cross of the main character where he's blamed for the murders and is sentenced to a fate worst than death where he's put into a drug induced coma in a virtual reality device that's basically going to make him experience like a thousand years of hell for the rest of his natural life.
And to add a box to my current collection.😁
Heavy Metal Magazine have early released their Kickstarter page for their soon-to-be campaign.

If anyone has followed HM for a few years knows the previous handlers were not the best at managing their funds. To the point many folks simply didn't get what they ordered. With no response from HM. Now, given this is from the new team, at least it's something to look forward to. If not at least stay in tuned with.
Come join the [new] Official Discord server for Heavy Metal. They aim to have news there first and foremost before other social media outlets. As well as other opportunities for fans, and professional artists/writers.
Plus, lots of knowledgeable folks who are more than willing to help with story location within the run.
Even if you lurk, news is worth it, especially after the 2 years of nothing.
I have been looking for this forever, but my heavy metal collection was lost long ago.
It's a woman in a green field, full of flowers I believe.. in that field she meets death, who removes her robe to reveal and old woman. The young woman (maybe a bride? I dunno) helps her lay to rest, then dons the robe and scythe and takes over.
If anyone knows it, or what issue it appears in that would be incredible.
Just wanted to share for those not on X or Discord. It doesn't look like they've posted about this yet on Facebook or Instagram. Not sure if anyone knows anything else at this point.
Edit with the actual link I meant to include: What if I told you that not only is the magazine coming back... but we also already have the new cover...
Hello! I make videos about the history of Games Workshop and Warhammer, and I also have a podcast where I look at films and other media that have influenced the development of the settings.
I have it on good authority that there were always copies of Heavy Metal to be found in the 80s design studio at Games Workshop and I am hoping to track down issues and stories that may have inspired later concepts, art, and stories from Warhammer & 40k.
As an example, I came across a comment on a blog about Warhammer & 40k that suggested that there was a story, possibly by Druillet, in an early Heavy Metal which featured a spaceship navigator who was plugged into the ship Dune-style. Something goes wrong and he finds himself adrift in a realm of chaos and attacked by demonic entities.
If there are any folks in the sub that are well versed in both Heavy Metal and the worlds of Warhammer then I would welcome any conjecture, suggestions, or theories of issues that may have played a role in shaping Games Workshop's games.
I thought I found a good thing on issuu but it already doesn’t half the second comic
Hey Heavy metal magazine sometimes had series of comic that was featured in the magazines like:
The Incal Requiem - Vampire Knight Yiu The Waters Of DeadMoon
I used this website to find them
https://www.heavymetalmagazinefanpage.com/hmlist.html
But they dont have information about magazines 258-320
So are there any good series to collect between those magazines?
Thanks
I painted this figure and scene and thought it would make an awesome cover for HMM, so I tried my hand at mocking one up. Figured this was the place to share it for feedback 🙂
Hey all, I have an image stuck in my head of the splash page of a story that I think ran in the magazine between 1985 and 2000 (yeah, one of the many vague details that I'm struggling with).
The splash page for the story showed a mostly nude woman (the protagonist) lounging inside a giant truck wheel. She was hired/tasked with rescuing someone and a later panel had her repelling into a room filled with bad guys, while wearing only a tactical harness.
I vaguely remember her name as 'bamba' or 'boomba'...although that could be a dream.
Anyone remember anything similar to this? Any idea who the artist was? The name of the story? Which issue? Or did I make it up in a fever dream?
The image has been stuck in my head for a few days and my google abilities are failing me. Hopefully someone remembers this.
Thanks a bunch!
Hey All,
Used to be a HUGE Heavy Metal reader back in the seventies and eighties. I remember really enjoying a story that, if memory serves, spanned a few issues. One component that was notable was the one of the primary antagonists was the "Orange Catholic Church" or something of the sort. Probably a long shot, but thought I'd ask the community and see if anyone knows the story/artist. TIA
all the posts say they're slow, but come on. no way to get ahold of anyone there.
should i contact my cc company and file a req to reclaim the funds?
