I spent vastly more time in Main Library and the EPB than I ever did in Kinnick. I feel every loss in every sport. I want my University to win everything. Yet, I treasure the smell of the stacks every time I return to Main Library, I smell the books and all the hands which turned all those pages. I love the UI more than I love the Hawkeyes. On, Iowa
“You’re settling for mediocrity” seems to be the newest snark to sling at people who saw this season coming.
Unless you’re a blue blood, constant postseason contender, or absolutely terrible, you’re mediocre. And you’re delusional if you think we as Iowa fans (just like Wisconsin, USC, Auburn, and Florida fans, for example) should be expecting to contend for the postseason playoffs/that anything less is “settling”.
Both Hayden Fry and KF have had ups and downs but built this program to the upper half of the mediocre. Sometimes, all the pieces will fall into place and most of the time they won’t. Chastising the realists for “accepting mediocrity” makes you no better than Husker fans. Actually, worse, because you’re stuck in glory days that exist only in your imagination.
Iowa has the potential to play well and sometimes the grit to do so and make a run at the natty… but it hasn’t happened consistently yet. It still could. But acting like you’re entitled to it is just as silly as the implication that recognizing mediocrity is the same as embracing it.
At the postgame presser last night he looked flat-out bad. I realize his health is solid because he is strict in his exercise and fitness regimen, but he looks really freaking old. Like it or not, pissed off about UCLA or not, Kirk is a member of our family, and watching him decline hurts. This sucks.
P.S. I earned a BA and a PhD at the UI so I reserve all whining and pissing/moaning rights applicable.
Go Hawkeyes
Here’s the scenario:
IOWA beats Maryland and nebraska
INDIANA loses to Michigan, Ohio State, and Purdue
OREGON loses to Maryland, Wisconsin, and Washington
OHIO STATE beats Indiana, loses to Michigan, and goes 1-1 against Northwestern and Purdue
PENN STATE loses to Minnesota and Washington, beats Purdue and Maryland
MINNESOTA beats Rutgers and Penn State, loses to Wisconsin
ILLINOIS beats Michigan State, Rutgers, and Northwestern
WASHINGTON beats Penn State, UCLA, and Oregon
MICHIGAN beats Indiana, Northwestern, and Ohio State
WISCONSIN beats Oregon, nebraska, and Minnesota
Thus, it’s still possible for Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, Washington, and Wisconsin, to all finish with 6-3 conference records - a ten-way tie.
The B1G tiebreaker among multiple teams starts with determining the best head-to-head record among the teams.
These records are as follows:
Ohio State gets the first seed.
Then you remove Ohio State from the above records and, with more than two teams still tied, do it again to figure out which team gets the second seed.
Iowa would be 3-0, and the other team with only one loss, Wisconsin, still has that loss … and it was to Iowa.
Thus, Iowa would the second seed and travel to Indianapolis.
Of course, if Ohio State were to lose to both Northwestern and Purdue, Iowa would be the top seed for the championship game.
So you’re telling me there’s a chance…
EDIT: Indiana and Oregon won. Now it’s over.
Going into this game you probably felt good. Offense scored 40 in back to back games, they found something in Sullivan, and they were playing a dog shit UCLA team that won 3 games and has 22 players on the injury report (Yes you read that right, 22!)
Joke is on you because Kirk Ferentz is the king of playing down to competition and ruining any semblance of momentum for this program, specifically in the last 4 years. Honestly when it was 10-0 I thought this would be a route and we could all relax but after the INT right after a 57 yard FG I think we all knew at that point it was going to be a battle because it’s not like Kirk would need to get his team motivated and come out with a fire. He’s already his bowl game quota and won a couple of rivalry game trophies.
They got beat on both sides in the trenches and looked Charmin soft. The Dline is pathetic and couldn’t shed a block. Oline couldn’t hold a block and didn’t play with any violence. Kirk will 100% blame injuries and while it is part of the game, like I stated previously the other team HAD 22 PLAYERS ON THE INJURY REPORT! Kirk Ferentz should be held accountable for this poor season and forced to retire. It was a cake walk schedule with a very veteran team that was a hot ticket to make the playoffs. Now? A max of 9 wins and that’s IF they win the bowl game. If this was any coach at a big time program they would more than likely be fired for the shit that has happened this season but not here at Iowa. Nope. Can’t fire Kirk after shitting himself because we’re afraid to turn in to insert bad program here. Yet Iowa fans like to tout how great this AD is but apparently we can’t trust her to hire a great football coach that won’t have shit like this happen.
The media doesn’t have the balls to call him out either. If you’re a season ticket holder, don’t buy the tickets if Kirk stays. Fans shouldn’t buy tickets for the team as long as he is here because it incentivizes the program to keep this loser here longer and helps his paycheck, which is the only thing he cares about at this point.

Anyone get tickets through the Iowa ticket office for the UCLA game on Friday? What section are the tickets in? Trying to get tickets near other Iowa fans in secondary market. Thanks!

This Iowa football team is more complete than they have had in a while, but they are already a three loss team. In ‘21 and ‘23 they weren’t as good (at least offensively), but ended 10-2 in the regular season despite the team's complications. I have been asking myself what the difference is this year. Why don’t they have a better record that shows the team’s improvement more accurately? Maybe you would disagree with me, but I truly believe that if they played the nine games again as a healthy team, Iowa football is 8-1.
The Ohio State loss is what it is. It could have been more of a competitive game, but we were never going into the Horseshoe and giving Ohio State their first loss. So what about Iowa State and Michigan State? The easy thing to point out in those games is defense and both of these games for some reason Deshaun Lee was not our CB2 and Michigan State was also without Sebastian Castro. If you have Lee in for ISU and MSU as well as Castro for MSU do we lose those games? I would say probably not, however there was more that went wrong.
Turnovers have been detrimental in Iowa’s losses. The only game Iowa football has won that they had a turnover in was Northwestern. Compare that one to the five combined turnovers (leaving out the Hail Mary interception from ISU) in the three games they lost and it is easy to outline how those losses could have been wins. Iowa’s opponents took advantage of those turnovers and were instrumental in those games becoming losses. A total of 31 points were scored off of those turnovers. Though 21 of those can from the OSU game, there were still two crucial turnovers between ISU and MSU that helped seal Iowa’s fate those days. Without either of those turnovers alone I would argue Iowa beats ISU and likely MSU as well.
What else? Oh yeah, who turned over those balls. Anyone one of you who has cared enough to read all this for some weird reason knows the answer to that question. If Iowa played ISU and MSU again with Brendan Sullivan at QB1 we likely don’t throw those picks and can run the ball more consistently throughout the game. In this way I think coaching decisions such as Sullivan being QB2 in those games is a big part of the reason Iowa football has a 6-3 record right now.
Anyway, I just needed to vent. I believe we are a playoff caliber team with our healthy starters (especially on defense, as we have all seen), but it just isn’t in the cards for a three loss team with an easy schedule like Iowa’s. Of course this is all speculation and none of this really matters at this point. If I can take away anything else from the team’s current situation it is that college football is so unpredictable and sometimes it just doesn’t go your way. It happens to everyone every once and a while… but it still sucks.
Post UCLA edit: never mind.
Pat Angerer, Sean Bock and Scott Pritchard on Iowa football.
Our University. It's not Michigan or Washington (to which both I was accepted), but I never really wanted to go to college anywhere else. Iowa is where I was born and Iowa is where I will die so it just fits. I only ever wanted to go to Iowa. I did that. I got to go to Iowa. Jesus ass I know how fortunate I am. Not only did I do that my brother and son also went to the UI. Proud I am. Go Hawks!
I took Iowa City Transit to the OCM and got off the bus right by Schaeffer Hall at 710 am. My first class was in the EPB at 810 am. It was maybe 20 below zero with wind but I didn't feel a thing. I was so proud to be on campus as a student at the university I always admired.and felt beneath. The pride I felt at that moment will live in me forever. I walked past Schaeffer and then down the Union Terrace towards EPB. The grey squirrels were everywhere and seemed to be welcoming me. There were cardinals and pigeons flying about. Except for the birth of my son, this was the proudest moment of my little life. Kinnick....don't even get me started. The BA and PhD I earned there were sacred moments to me. Go Hawks!
RIP Buddy!
