I use to post on R/Romani to try to educate non-Roma on the Culture because I’ve noticed there is so much false information online. Sadly very few actual Roma ever posted on the subreddit the majority of the post on there are fiction writers asking for advice for their stories and self hating white people asking if how can they find out if they are Romani because they have a feeling their great-great grandmother might have a been a witch or something. I knew something was off about the mods when they said the rules of the subreddit are no gatekeeper, no questioning if anyone is actually Romani or not and everything must be posted in English. It turns out the mods are all white non-Roma who have a strong dislike for Real Roma. They say they want to learn more about Romano culture but whenever roma tell the truth about the culture they silence them because romano beliefs go against the liberal white American agenda. I was the only actual Gypsy on that subreddit and I was posting pics and videos of real Gypsy culture that you can not find on google or learn about from any book they sell on Amazon. I would get messages all the time from people thanking me for my post and keeping the subreddit active and asking me questions and advice. The mods banned me without warning from the subreddit when I asked why they said some of my post had “ Gatekeeper attitude” when I asked for an example of that they just ignored my message like ignorant children. So in the end it is white Americans Who know nothing about Roman culture and openly reject it and replace it with their own fake gypsy culture they made up these are the people running /Romani and instead of lifting Romani voices they silence them because they are hypocrites and if that is not white supremacy I don’t know what is.
Why is every flag recognised with emoji. Even the flag for trans people, but our flag STILL isn’t on there ?
I have always been interested in the culture of the Romani peoples. I don’t know anything or what terms are the correct one(s) to use.
I love watching (good) documentaries that can educate me about the culture. Is there anything you would recommend for me to start with?
Thank you 🙏
Dear Gypsie people. I dont like you but I also dont know you. I want to change that. Please just tell me something that is good about you. I only see disgusting gypsies in the city streets begging for money and I see them try to scam people. I want to learn that you have good sides too, what are they? Do you have any famous people that helped the world?
so i'm from the uk and my grandmas side is part Romani gypsy and holds the names jessop and smith, with reasearch on how many gypsy last names there are i cant seem to find the last name jessop so is jessop a real gypsie last name or does it kinda subdivide from it?
I was cursed by a Romany woman selling lucky heather 20 years ago. She just stuck the stuff in my face while walking behind me and expected me to understand that she wanted money, but I was a teenager and didn't understand what she was doing. She didn't say anything. I assumed her grassy twig was just a worthless giveaway. I knew nothing about gypsy culture.
I've had generally bad luck since then, but now I can see that the curse is real. I am experiencing paranormal phenomena, ghostly activity. This is totally serious, and I do not need psychiatric help. These curses are real. Can anything be done about them?
1-A deep dark family secret. Probs your grandma didn't want you to know you were a badass super roma.
2-Females, you will need a lot of absurd piercings. This will let the evils whites know your a nonconformity expert.
3- Lets be real, at some point, you will have to claim you have cancer. I know I know. But you just got to so it.
4- Know absolutely nothing about our language and culture or be able to relate to it.
5- Referring to your self as a gypsy, more earrings probably will help but you will need to let everyone know you are a roma.
Did I missed any?
I’m Irish blooded 3rd generation American but I got Romani on my grandma’s side, I want to be a gypsy, I’m selling almost everything I own and traveling because it’s my life’s passion, but when I talk with a Romani gypsy they get real nasty and start goin on about how you can only be a gypsy if your full blooded or born in country, they say people who say they want to be gypsies are stupid and are disgracing their culture. I personally I love gypsies and their culture and I want to live like they do. I’ve had these kinds of interactions a good few times and I just wanna know, why are Romani gypsies so hostile when I say I love their culture and wanna live like them
Idk I'm just genuinely curious, it is said they descendents of Indo-Aryan, hailing from the Indian Subcontinent.
Do folks considering India as a long lost home? or something like that?
Hello!
I want to know if gypsie is considered a slur or a derogatory term? Sorry if this question has been answered before. I googled but got conflicting views, so I’m not sure what to follow. 😬
I’m currently living in Ireland.
I learned recently that Romanians and Roma people are not the same!
I didn’t know that because of the media and the stereotypes that people spread around.
The thing is, where I live, whenever I go shopping and I see a Roma person around I see also the security following them wherever they go and just right in front of them.
What do you think about this type of treatment?
Does that happen all the time?
I cannot imagine how hard must be to be followed all the time in the stores.
I feel uncomfortable for you guys.
Do you think it's racist?
