just saw this ep again the other day and it is one of my favorites. yes, it is another replay of typical woman-beaten-down-by-her-menfolk story-line, but something about this episode really strikes me as poignant. Chester's conflicted feelings, the girl's immediate feelings for the wounded man, the Native American guy (without speaking English) all somehow lend a desperation to their roles. it's what i would call a "quiet" episode, a little action, but lots of dialogue, close ups etc.
what are some of your favorite "unusual" episodes?
I started watching this series during the pandemic with my Dad. Thought maybe it was another boring old TV western you see on basic cable. Boy, was I wrong. What a show! I had a question though, after Chester's last episode, does the gang ever talk about him at all? Do we know what became of him down the road? I know with one-off episodes, they'll have characters come and go, but Chester was such a big part of everybody's lives that to just stop talking about him seems odd. Sad even.
A friend of mines dad passed and I want to buy her a heavy gunsmoke themed blanket. They watched it together and she’s always cold. What I’m finding is rinky dink fleece. I want something woven that I can get embroidered. Price is no thing
I've been listening to the old Gunsmoke radio show a lot lately. It's great. This sub seems to be mostly focused on the TV show. Any fans of the old radio show?
I have all episodes of Gunsmoke but don’t want to go through them all. Looking for the episode where Dillon is taken hostage and the town rescues him. Not the episode where he is taken hostage by outlaws trying to get to Mexico. Thank you for the help.
Hello there,
I am writing theh eulogy for my fathers funeral and want to talk about his love of western shows from his childhood and how he always like Marshal Dillon as a character. I am hoping to read one of these monologues during the Eulogy to describe my dad's character.
I remember there being some type Marshal Dillion monologues in some of the episodes and am wondering if anyone rememebrs if there was one that would go well speaking about someone who was born not only a fighter but also a defender of others that could not defend themselves. I found ones about holding onto anger, holding a grudge and others, but non that really land the way I want.
I was trying to watch Gunsmoke on Pluto TV earlier today, and the video kept stuttering, so I couldn't finish it.
In the episode, and young man and his wife were under fire from a gang outside. It may have been only an older man and his son, who were shooting holes in the house. The young man turned off all the lights. The older man outside told his son he had a surprise for them.
The couple were hunkered down in the house until the shooting stopped. The young man told his wife to stay put, while he went to check on something. She was praying that he would not be killed.
The husband came back, and said there was no more problem, and "Let's eat, supper is getting cold". The next morning, the young man came into town, and asked the sheriff to step outside. Pulling back a cover over his wagon, the young man showed Matt 2 dead men.
The doc said it looked like rope burns around their neck.
This is as far as I got. I think the young man's name was Peevee, but I'm not sure.
Thanks.
In the 5th episode of Season 4 "Letter of the Law" theres a African Man with a Piece of Leather over his right ear and a very Broad Nose, it sounded like Matt called him "Kato" or "Cato" (idk how they spelled it), I looked around but cant seem to find a List of all the African Actors/Actresses.
Does anybody know who Portrayed him? Cause he looks familiar

I mean. The emotion invoked inside of me by the last 10 minutes, was clarified and confirmed by a line that Chester delivered to Matt:
Matt: You did fine, Chester.
Chester: Mr Dillon, but what would have happened if I hadn’t?
Matt: Well, then he would have killed another man.
Chester: Ugh, I,…I feel kind of sick.
I watched a transformation of how I viewed Matt as a character. I have watched and rewatched what I thought was every single episode. And this one slipped by me.
Matt’s transition from his usual temperament into a full blown alpha, head of the town, shit kicking baddassery was so fast, but still fueled by the ambition and determination to follow what he stands for, which is the law. He did a simple reverse psychology which I’ve never really witnessed him do in other episodes or seasons; he usually is just very to the point and commanding. This episode, I watched him get into the bad guys head. The lines he had were minimum, but the way James Arness’ intensity is reinforced by his towering stature and and his 1000 yard stare, I saw a side of his character I had never seen before, and it gave me goosebumps watching the end cut of Matt walking back to his office, Chester staring at Matt as he walks away, almost scared of what just happened, and disgusted that everything could have gone wrong.
I’m not sure why I never saw it, or if I’m just writing the absolute obvious, but I thought I’d share my absolute appreciation for the writers and the actors in this one.
The episode is The Killer. season 1 episode 28.
The episode with the man being harassed in Dodge because of the man married to a Native American woman was so disturbing. The show was so ahead of it’s time in dealing with the discrimination. Really impressive.
Just a heads up for all of y'all. As of about a week ago Pluto has every season of the best TV Western ever. Enjoy!
Gunsmoke season 1 episode 23, the dying man says "he didnt even bother to count coal" What does he mean by counting coal?
There is an episode I’m trying to find where a girl is being abused, I believe by her father. She’s trying to cook a meal for him and he’s mad there isn’t any meat and she says it’s because you didn’t bring any meat home and he slaps her.
There is an episode of gunsmoke in maarsahl dillons office where doc adams says somethings to cheater and chester mocks his words then doc adams swats atvhim and says stop that. Does anyone know which season or episode it was? Thanksbin advance
At some point Kitty and Matt and partner are sitting at a table drinking beer. Some suspects leave maybe abruptly. Kitty says something like "I wonder what that was about" Matt says "it must be the bad beer you serve in this place" Kitty says "come on Matt I'm serious" Matt says "what makes you think im not?"
Seen on insp channel this week. Can't remember episode name to rewatch. Thanks
So I’ve noticed at the beginning of some episodes Marshal Dillion monologues for a minute as if he’s reading aloud a journal entry he has made. Does anyone have a copy of these? I’d like to read them all.
Can’t find a clear answer online about this.
I've seen there are several Gunsmoke novels but I've never picked one up. Most reviews seem to be fairly "meh." Has anyone read one or three that stood out they could recommend?
I’ve seen a few episodes here and there but I just started digging into it and it’s amazing. Just finished with season 7, as that’s what’s on Paramount Plus right now (I’ll start the first 6 seasons soon). I like listening to the radio show while driving home after a hike in the woods…it just fits so well.
I’ve been bothering my friends about it and trying to get them to watch it. After watching season 7 I said that the show feels like a cross between The Andy Griffith Show and something written by Cormac McCarthy. I love the grittiness of the show and it some episodes feel like a western noir. The endings of the shows aren’t as happy as the story would lead you to believe (like in the episode The Gallows), and I really like that about it. I imagine the episodes in color won’t hit the same as the rest of them, but I’ll still give them a shot.
Should I just start from the beginning, or is it fine to skip around? Does the show really fall off after a certain point? Anything I should look out for in terms of theme or production?
So far I’ve seen them reuse two actors in season 7; Harry Dean Stanton and Anthony Caruso. Both are phenomenal actors and I’d love to see them pop up again.
I reckon there's no crying while Marshallin' in Dodge...but did Matt ever come close?
I'm curious, were saloon girls back in those days escorts or just girls to keep men entertained by listening to their stories and keep buying drinks.
I watched the episode Old Dan from season 7 and man, it’s my favorite so far. Not very much action but I love how it developed the character of Doc more. In any show, I generally prefer the more “slice of life” episodes. Don’t get me wrong, the ones with more action are great too. I’m just a sucker for character development. The ending was just touching and sad as well. I ended up buying the complete series dvd set. Just waiting for it in the mail. I’m juggling Gunsmoke along with Star Trek: The Next Generation, Little House on the Prairie, and Babylon 5. I just can’t stop watching Gunsmoke. All the rest are on the back burner for now. I wonder how long it will take me to complete the series. I haven’t found an episode guide with ratings for each episode except IMDB which surprisingly has a a couple hundred or so reviews for each episode but I don’t always agree with the scores. I was thinking of creating my own episode guide like that and posting it somewhere online. I’m sure some of you would like to see that on here so I’ll definitely post it when I get through it! Does anyone else love Old Dan?
I’m 24 years old and decided I wanted to see what Gunsmoke was all about since it ran for so long and I’m finally seasoned enough in my tastes to like black and white movies and shows. I started season 7 on Paramount+ and I’m absolutely loving it. Marshall Dillon is such a badass. I wish more people my age would get into it because it still holds up all these years later. That just goes to prove good writing and good acting are timeless. I’m watching the episode Harper’s Blood right now. Wow. I usually have a hard time with westerns but this one is different. I’ve been listening to the radio dramas as well when I’m at work but they’re pretty hit or miss in my opinion. The shows seem to be more hits than misses. I’m just enjoying it so much I wanted to come here to have people to discuss it with. Thanks y’all!
On more than one episode, Kitty sits at the bar eating a boiled egg (has a salt shaker too). Always wondered if this was popular bar food during that time. 🥚🥚
