First Time Home Buyer and in GPW

Hi hopefully future neighbors! My husband and I have been living in Royal Oak for the past 6 years and we’re ready to buy our first home. After spending some time in Grosse Pointe it clicked with us that this is where we see ourselves raising starting and raising a family. Between the schools, downtown, community events it REALLY checks all our boxes. Royal Oak did too but it’s just so unaffordable and you basically get a shoebox.

After looking for a while it seems the Woods is our most affordable option and we’re seeing a lot of homes under $350k which is unheard of in RO! Here my question: Should we avoid the area near the hospital by Morris? We have some friends who work at the hospital who freaked when we mentioned we saw some houses we considered putting offers on Bournemouth, Newcaste etc because of safety? I was SHOCKED and tbh I kind of don’t believe it. GP in my opinion is one of the safest/nicest areas! Is this an actual thing? I would love some locals insight because I make the biggest purchase of my life!

How's early voting where you are?

Woods here. Stopped by to vote on Saturday around noon and was No. 263. My husband went today, and it was lively, he said. How was it where you are? And what sticker did you get? (Werewolf here.)

Is anyone else SHOCKED at the money spent in this school board election?

By my count the numbers are staggering:
PFAE (Shawn Cotton): $550,000!!!
Kate Hopper: $28,000
Clint Derringer: $23,000
Colleen Worden: $20,000
Laura Hull: $19,000
Tim Klepp: $19,000
Heath Roberts: $18,000
Terri Collins: $8,000
Melisa Fredanberg: $8,000
Diane Gellci: $2,000

$612,000 to be spent supporting Cotton candidates
$81,000 to be spent supporting The Nice Guys.
$2,000 for the smart Albanian lady.

Just on money spent alone by one guy, makes me VERY SKEPTICAL of motives. You don't spend that kind of money out of pocket simply because you want to serve. I at least respect Hopper and Roberts, they have people in the community that think enough of them to donate to their efforts. Collins and Fredanberg show me everything I need to see given no one BUT the cotton family gave them money.

I think any of the Nice guy crew or Gellci will be great additions...at least they will be representative of the community.

Comcast upgrading coax lines to fiber 🤞

This looks exciting! It is about time Comcast swap the 90s coax with Corning fiber. This is near Mack and Vernier in Grosse Pointe Woods. Hope to see an upgrade across all Pointes!

Corning fiber delivered to Comcast as per label

Safe places to walk your dog in the evening or at night.

I’m in SCS but also close to Grosse Pointe & Harper Woods. I find as I get older I’m getting a little scared to walk by myself in the dark. I am definitely open to driving to new areas to walk my elderly dog. Looking for off leash as well. She just likes to sniff and meander around. Thank you so much!

School super living in a paid for apartment?

Story floating around the barber shop Saturday is that the new super is being housed by the boe president. Any truth?

Lots of sirens today

I live in Farms near Kercheval and I’ve heard an exorbitant amount of sirens today. Any one else notice this? Did something happen?

War Dances, then and now

For a writing project, tell me about your experiences going to the middle-school dances at the War Memorial. Fonder memories preferable to disasters, but funny disasters are fine. Anybody experience them as both a kid and a parent?

Vet recommendations

Just moved to the farms a few months ago. My current vet is located in Rochester and it’s become a pain to drive that far. Can anyone recommend a vet in the GP area? Thanks in advance!

Editing to add that I made an appointment at Harper Woods Vet. Thanks for all the recommendations!

Will priority waste take small landscaping pavers?

We have a bunch of small landscaping pavers that we no longer have a use for. I’d rather not do FB marketplace place as we don’t want people coming over to our house.

Updated Grosse Pointe(s) Flag Design

I made some updates to the flag design I posted a while back based on feedback. I brightened the green and blue up a little bit. Also added a gold border to the sail and altered its shape and position slightly. I’ll paste my spiel on the design choices and symbolism in the comments.

Trick or Treating in GPW?

I am a new homeowner here in ‘the Woods’ and want to know what to expect on Halloween as far as ‘trick or treating,’ i.e. giving out candy. I have lived in dense big cities for the past 18 years and so don’t really know what I’m doing in these types of situations…although I grew up in Dearborn in the 90s and participated in Halloween as a kid and have great memories. I expect that things have probably changed since then…but hopefully not too much. I would like to trust that this should be pretty straightforward, but what do I know? I bought like $50 of candy to hand out this weekend and am not sure if it’s enough or too much (also, wtf is up with these candy prices?!?). Are there even kids here, and do they still ‘trick or treat’? Any tips or tricks or watch -outs? I am learning so much here already, but don’t want to f-up one of the best nights of the year! Thanks!

Any recommendations for contractor to move washer/dryer up from basement?

My mother-in-law would like to stay in her house but is starting to have real problems with stairs. It’s got 2 bedrooms downstairs and a linen closet, the washer/dryer could potentially go any of those places. Does anyone have recommendations for contractors?

Precinct locations for November

I have voted at Brownell Middle School for years. This year they moved our poll location to the War Memorial. What happened with the precincts and poll locations this year? I have a feeling that they reduced the number of locations if I am literally driving to the opposite corner of the Farms to vote now.

Also, what is the process for early voting. I read on a couple Michigan websites that you need an absentee ballot to early vote at city hall but the GPF website doesn’t say anything about that. It just lists the times and dates for early voting. I requested an absentee just in case. I’m worried that with the new location they limited the number of polling sites which is just going to lead to crazy lines and wait times.

Chicago sports in GP

We are Chicago transplants in Grosse Pointe…having a hard time finding a place that shows Bears games. Looked into getting Sunday ticket but it’s $$$. Any restaurant/bars that show da bears in lion country?

School Board Trustee Terry Collins...

Could there be a more miserable public servant? This man has zero humility, appears to be utterly humorless and really isn't that much of a financial "wiz". He is definitely not the best available candidate on the market place.

Can we talk about the school board election?

Am I the only person worried about WHY someone would spend SO MUCH money to elect people to the school board that agree with me? What is the end game, because there is no way we know it.

Dog playgroups/meet ups/busy dog parks?

Hey neighbors, my family and I just moved here from California with our 9 year old Havapoo Jordy. I ran a successful dog boarding/walking business there but that won’t fly in our new house. Jordy is used to having 3-8 dogs to play with daily, and I can see the lack of socialization is getting to him.

I’ve taken him to the GPP dog park 7 times and there was another dog there once 😟. Is there any other parks nearby that are more active or do people actually go to Patterson and I just go at the wrong time?

Thank you in advance for any and all help you can provide. If anyone else is in the same situation and wants a doggie meet up or just to walk together let me know.

Check out @the_canineteenth_hole on Instagram or DM me for my rover.com link where you can see my former doggie empire in action.

Why so many annoying political yard signs around here?

From both sides of the political spectrum. Gives me anxiety.
