My weird association with Paul Scheer and Billups
This one is gonna be a bit of a walk…
My first exposure to Paul Scheer was on Best Week Ever and its ilk in the early ‘00s. That show would have some sort of “person of the year” segment, and in 2004 that person was just “some dude” because of the random unfamous dudes becoming famous that year, one example being Kevin Federline marrying Britney Spears.
In Scheer’s talking head segment, his example was “And who was the NBA Finals MVP? Some dude named Chauncey”. This was in reference to the Detroit Pistons upsetting the Lakers in the Finals led by Chauncey Billups.
For whatever reason this line reading has always stuck in my head, so Paul Scheer voicing a character named Billups really tickles that part of my brain where it’s been buried for 20 years.
