is it just me or has face recognition and grouping in google photos simply become unusable and just plain broken?

I tried Google Photos a few years back and was really impressed by the accuracy of Googles face recognition and auto-grouping of pictures. Now I'm back and put my photos back to the service and blown away of how awful it seems now?!

first it takes days, sometimes weeks that any faces are identified. after that a wild mixture of different faces appear under one person, sometimes they change completely overnight. it is often impossible to link two recognized faces to another. and I seems that it really doesn't matter that I put effort in selecting the wrong detections out of the persons groups. A few days later, Google just put the next wrong pictures to this face. completely random.

so, is it just me? does Google need some time for this or is Photos face recognition broken and will never get back to the level that Apple Photos reached nowadays?
(Google was way ahead about three years ago!)

When I attempt to share an older picture-1 year or so-the app freezes after I press the share button. I can do any other function with said photo, just can't share it. The app hangs for 20 seconds then crashes. Deleting and reinstalling does not help. Anyone else?

Recently for some reason, ALL the photos on my Google Photos got copied to my Mom's Photos account. But not vice versa she says it's filling up her storage space. And to be honest, I got some embarrassing shit on there.

I tried deleting pictures on her account but it also deletes it on my account. It says sharing is turned off.

Is there a way to take my pictures off of her account?

I know takeout is the most popular option when downloading everything but the problem is that it isn't that reliable. It often missses files and stuff, and I can't go through thousands of photos just to see if there's anything missing. Plus, it gives you a disorganized mess.

Is there a way to download everything that's actually reliable and doesn't miss files?

i really like that the widget shows the date and everything but it won't cycle through pictures on my home screen? it just stays on a single picture forever until i click on it and back out and then it will show me a different image. i assume it's supposed to update on its own right? my gallery widget will but it's not as nice looking and doesn't show the date. i have an android. thanks.

How do I delete a photo from my Google photos but keep it on my phone? I feel like a couple years ago I was able to do this no problem when I went through and cleaned up my backups. Now, I can't seem to figure it out.

I'm trying to download all of my photos from Google Photos to a USB stick. I went through and selected 500 at a time (because that's how many are allowed), downloaded them, and now have them in zip folders on my laptop. I tried to export them to the USB stick, but when I did, I realized they weren't sorted by date anymore. They're in alphabetical order. Clicking 'sort by date modified/created' doesn't work either because (and I'm assuming) according to the computer, they were just 'created' when I downloaded them a few minutes prior. Even when sorted by date, they're still in alphabetical order.

Does anyone know how I can transfer all of my photos on Google Photos to my USB and still have them in chronological order just like they were? I'm not about to go through thousands of photos redoing the dates. I also really don't want photos from the last 7 years all scrambled together... how will I ever find anything?

I used to upload my camera photos at the app, and in the search method I always put the model of my camera ( nikond3300 ) and appear all the photos took by it. But nowadays I can’t even look the photos by that method of research, appears photos took by my iPhone, Samsung and a lot more. Anyone know how to “filter” to appear just the photos of one device?

I would figure toggling to show screenshots in google photos would just bring up stills but videos also come up when you say to show screenshots. Any way to get around that?

So, I didn’t realize but Google Photo syncs with your phone. So if you delete pictures on your Google photos, it also deletes it on your phone. (Which is honestly the stupidest shit ever, why is this even a feature).

So when I realized that, I went to restore the trash folder, however, turns out that Google Photos synced with my phone past my storage limit and it just kept syncing.

So, when I tried to restore it kept telling me “not enough storage.”

So, I bought more storage, because I just want to restore all of my photos. However, is doesn’t fucking sync up the phone anymore, the photos on my phone aren’t fucking back and I’m losing my mind because I have a lot of important memories that I wanted to delete off of Google photos because it was wasting Space. I was looking through pictures on my main account and decided to switch over to a garbage account that I've pretty much never used. To my horror I found all of the photos on my main account on the garbage account. I don't see why this happened and I'm curious how to desync them in some way, I can't figure it out. If a hacker got into one of my garbage accounts, can they see all of my photos? (even those from my main account)

Im am android s23 user and i happened to see that some photos in my google photos main "camera" folder are some photos that are actually in a seperate folder in the gallery app. When i go to settings and backup folders in the google photos app to check whether that folder is being backed up, I don't even see it in the list available to backup. Why is this? It's happening for a couple of albums

When google photos creates something like animations, motion pics, collages,etc, and you save it

Where is this saved and does it take space?

My theory is, if i save the thing feom my p8, it takes space of my google account, if i save the thing from my p1 then it is ok, no extra space is taken.

But i really dont know

All of a sudden our photos (viewed on a Brand Account for a business) are not showing. All album thumbnails have this minus sign and then most photos in albums look like this. Only some albums have full photos that actually show correctly but I can't figure out why some and not most.

This is the case on Chrome, Brave, and Firefox, HOWEVER Safari does actually show all photos.

Anybody know why this happens and how to fix it??

Hi everyone!

I am switching from a Samsung to an IPhone. I wanted to back up my pictures on my google photos the same way I have them organized on my phone. Some of my albums have photos from different time periods so unfortunately when I download them to Google photos they're all disorganized and difficult to find.

Is they're a way to download the album as an album and not as individual pictures which are organized by the time they were taken?

The only date column that is available after downloading from google photos is “date modified” and it isn’t even the correct date. I tried using incognito to download, using google takeout and to no avail.

I did found someone recommended to use datetimerecover.com after downloading from google takeout. Is it a reliable site?

My wife and I just had our first baby a few months ago. For Christmas, I was thinking about getting my parents, who don't live close by, a digital frame that I can link to the Google Photos album I created, which I'd like to update occasionally with new photos of our little one. My parents are older, so getting them to use technology is always an issue. I can set up once and manage myself, which would be great. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm running into storage issues with my Google account and noticed a lot of my photos have exact duplicates that take up space. The photos were taken with a Pixel 1 phone, so in theory they should not take up storage, and most of them don't. But many will have an exact copy that does take up space.

Example:

One copy says:

Backed up.

Original quaility.

This item doesn't take up space in your account storage.

And the other says:

Backed up (4.1 MB)

Original quality.

My impression is that these are photos that I once edited, usually just with the suggested "Enhance."

Why do these copies exist, is there any risk in deleting them, and is there a way to delete them automatically?

I'm trying to download some albums from my Google Photos account, but there are some weird discrepancies between the number of items selected and what actually got downloaded. The first album I tried has 2686 items, but the downloaded folder only has 2250 items. Clicking the "Download Album" button instead of just selecting them all manually and then downloading them didn't fix it (it only gave me 1899 items for some reason), nor did downloading the album via Google Takeout (2250 again). I figured that maybe it couldn't download everything at once, so I tried a small download of 584 images and only got 494.

Is there an easy way to fix this, or an alternative method that will actually give me everything in the album, or am I forced to manually cross-reference the downloaded album with the one on my account to see what's missing?

Google usually has pretty good apps and many of them, including slightly obscure ones like Google home are used by me daily. They're easy to use and the UI is clean. Google photos was one of them. Then everything went to shit. My account storage was at 96%, and being a student with only a debit card that doesn't support recurring payments, I thought I was screwed. Until I realised that I don't really need cloud backup, since I use the same thumbdrive for both my phone and laptop. So I switched off cloud backup, and then tried to clear my account storage to atleast 80% so that I can send emails. What I didn't know is that Google apparently behaves like a spoiled child if you stop giving it access to your personal life. The fucking app deleted the selected photos from my account (which I wanted) and ALSO FROM MY PHONE (which I definately did NOT want.) And when I updated the fucking app, all my albums were gone, as were the photos in them. Right now, I'm very very angry at this, enough to rant on reddit. I sincerely hope that Google solves this unnecessary problem and stops being , for one minute, the most pervasive and Orwellian company on Earth. Oh and a small part of me hopes that Google photos drains the resources of Google, eventually bankrupting it. Good day.

I have a love-hate relationship with Google photos. All I want is a photo app where I take a photo and then have the ability to move it into a folder without it being a duplicate somewhere else. I don't care so much about searches I just want one copy of each image I take. Or at the very least to be able to copy that image and put it in a different folder if I need to. Anyone else feel the same about Google photos and found an alternative? Thanks in advance for your help.

I've returned from a long vacation trip where I've organized photos by cities I've visited in a albums within Photos. For an upcoming family gathering, I'd like to bring my tablet with the Photos app making them available for folks to view.

Question:

Is there an easy way to let someone scroll through the different albums but not letting them have access to edit or modify any of the albums? I would be logged into the Photos app using my account on the tablet.

The only other thing I can think of is by using a second account and sharing the albums applicable to view-only. Any other ideas?

I have two google accounts, mine and my moms. Suddenly we both run out of storage and my photos of 2024 to July 2023 backed up to my moms google photos. Being a teenager obviously there’s things that I don’t want her to see. (Uni parties, bf sleeping over.. etc). I deleted her entire 2024 to July 2023 but I’m still stuck on if she can see anything. Heavily considering just moving ALL of my google photos to a hard drive and deleting my account. Any thoughts or ideas on what to do. Also she isn’t really tech savvy.

Edit : my photos or my whole account is supposed to back up to my newer account but didn’t.

Received a message today in my Google Photos app asking whether I wanted to stick with a "basic Recap" or use Gemini to get "the best version of Recap." What's Google's privacy policy around feeding my images to its AI? I'd love any info and thoughts on this. Thanks!
