GGApps: Promoting Android apps using the barest permissions!

Preference to open source apps as well!

GGApps are those that respect the user and his/her device.

How do you recognize a Good Guy App?

  • It doesn't require permissions for phone/device resources that are not required for its function
  • It does a great job but might go unnoticed in the Playstore
  • It respects your other resources such as RAM, storage, and battery
  • It's housebroken. It doesn't leave crap everywhere and it cleans up after itself when uninstalled
  • It has a no-nonsense interface that doesn't waste your time
  • Often GGApps cost money when they are worth it
  • Sometimes GGApps serve you ads, but they aren't dicks about it.

The need is greatest to identify GGApps for Android, because Android's permission system is inexcusably terrible, but feel free to recommend Good Guy Apps for any platform.

Most Playstore users don't consider permissions when they select and install an app, or when they rate it. There are too many apps in the store that are rated highly, but still copy your address book back to the mother ship. Good Guy Apps serves to speak to this Playstore shortsightedness.

Some GGApps require a rooted device. Then again, installing malicious or sloppy apps can be disastrous on a rooted device. More info at /r/androidroot/

The Good Guy App Suite

Created from your suggestions:

  • unit converter
  • QR code scanner
  • phone app:
  • address book:
  • photo album:
  • personal productivity apps:
  • games:
  • messenger:
  • calculator:
  • browser:
  • SIP phone client:
  • book reader:
  • music player:
  • etc (suggest)

Wall of Shame (uninstall these)

  • Facebook Messenger (requires every permission on God's green earth... just to chat with your friend? No thanks.). Alternative: Tinfoil EDIT:I guess FB cut the tinfoil access to chat.
  • Sony's Walkman app (requires access to everything! Updates and enables itself on my Z3 even if I disable it! That's like Sony selling me a car and insisting I let their little brother camp in the back seat, forever, until I sell the car!)

Any good guy apps for android tV?

It seems hard to side-load another app store... but sideloading an APK is ok.... or better yet if the code is open source but the app is available on Google Play...

There are a lot of for-profit apps like youtube, netflix etc...

I'm not looking for piracy, but just for any open source apps or games or products that work on Android TV!

Best De-googled browser?

Bromite is good but the problem is that it hasn't been updated in over 6 months and on 108 version of chrome

I heard of Cromite and Mulch, do you recommend any other browsers?

Best open source reddit clients since aPI change?

Infinity Developer recently deleted the api token, so the free app no longer works...

There is a workaround to using your own api token: https://www.reddit.com/r/Infinity_For_Reddit/comments/14c2v5x/build_your_own_apk_with_your_personal_api_key_in/

Alternatively, what do you use to browse reddit on android or ios?

[Request] A good, no frills CBTI (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBTI) ) app

As someone who struggles with sleep and knows others as well, this would be amazing!

The free apps I found so far are

SLEEPIO and CBT-i Coach (made by the US government)

Neither seems to be OSS though ;(

Best Transcription / Voice to Text App?

Looking for a trustworthy app that can handle voice recording with voice to text. Would like if the files saved as a somewhat universal file format like .txt and not as a program-specific proprietary file format.

If I eventually find one I'll add it to this post.

Shall we open the sub to apps on platforms other than android?

Would you like to see open source iOS, web, PC, Mac, and Linux apps? Or do you like having the sub just be for Android?

Note-taking app or google docs alternative with voice memos

At the moment, I use Signal to message myself so that I can easily write notes and record voice memos in the same thread throughout the day. I can also make multiple group chats with just myself and treat them like google docs (except a little extra effort to copy, paste, edit, then delete previous message in order to make edits). Any alternative to this? Thanks!

How to set a whole password that will lock me out of distracting apps

Trying to reduce distractions on my Android. I would like to set a whole password (not a pattern lock nor a four digit code, but a whole password to make it long and thus more inconvenient) for my browser app and my messaging app. Is there any third party apps available that offer this? I have Aurora and F-droid app stores. Thanks!
