Good post for newbies on how to keep your water quality in tip top shape

I’m trying to rehome a longfin ryukin goldfish. The person offering to take him says she has a 75 gallon tank with 2 black skirt tetras, and three molly.
She keeps her tank at 79 as well. I keep my tank within the ranges of 68-75 throughout the year. Is this too hot? Are these fish compatible?
I had done a water change recently & my tank light was on. Shortly after the water change I had gone outside for work (one and a half day).
Before going out I forgot to turn off the light of the tank & only realized it after I came back. The fishes were doing fine & I turned off the light. Few hours later when I turned on the light again for feeding, they freaked out.
If I turned off the lights they go back to being normal. This is continuing for almost 2 days now.
They do eat well & are healthy, but how can I solve the light problem?
I have a young comet & shubunkin in a large tank, When I first got them they had white spot I treated them and they're now fine. But I'm worried that they'll get ill again, They have good flow lot's of air and filtration in there tank with big water changes. I want these fish to live a long life & might get a pond eventually. I'm new to goldfish so would like some advice ie adding salt during water changes or adding medicines to prevent illnesses I feed a lot of peas to avoid swim bladder problems. Is there anything else I can do
He had dropsy. He passed away peacefully. But that's really a traumatic experience to kill your own pet fish.
55 gal tank
Parameters:
pH: 7.2 Ammonia: 0.05 Nitrite: 0 Nitrate: 2
I'm using a liquid test kit. For what I know the eyes have been bulging like this for 2 months or more. In his old tank there was a high nitrate spike that probably caused it. Its been weeks but nothing is changing I've used aquarium salt but no medication yet.
The eyes aren't this cloudy its just the camera. I'm afraid its permanent. Any medication recommendations?
I've been doing a fishless cycle for about three weeks (first tank)
When I tested the water this morning, I had 0 ammo, 5ppm nitrites, and 20ppm nitrates, so I thought it might be time to change some water.
I did a 50% water change, dosed prime and stability... and now the nitrites are still at 5 ppm but the nitrates spiked all the way to 80ppm??? Maybe the nitrites were actually much higher and the stability kick started the nitrobacter? Is that possible?
I tested the tap water. 0ppm nitrates. I re-tested the tank water, same results.
Guess I better do another big water change?
One of my goldfish is floating on its side. It's still alive as it keeps trying to swim around but cannot orientate itself properly. It switches from left to right side and swims in circles then rests at the bottom. There's a second fish in the same tank. Both around the same age, about 10 years old.
What can I do?
Hi friends! Have to do a fish-in cycle due to extenuating circumstances, from my research, I'm getting seachem prime and I've seen 3 different methods, 1. Water changes every day and add seachem prime each time to keep ammonia at bay, 2. Water changes every other day with prime to allow the beneficial bacteria to grow in between, or 3. No water changes and prime every 48hrs to allow the bacteria to grow, which one is the most effective? I've got 2 small ranchus
Hey. So I have a 40g aquarium, and I went to get some new ornaments yesterday and the workers at PetSmart were going to “throw out” this fish. I asked for a discount on him and they said he’s free. He is a little deformed, his jaw is slightly askew and there is a bubble under his chin. They told me they got him a few weeks ago and has been like this since they got him. Idk even what this fish is, but I wanted to at least try to save him. He sits at the bottom of the tank all day. He’s come up towards the top like, very messy, struggling to swim sortha… I’ve had him for three days now… he comes up for pellets. His tank mates are 7 female betta and one algae eater. I have an empty 20g that isn’t set up anymore, should I separate him for a while or something? I’ve never had goldfish before. He is about 3” from nose to end of his tail. Thanks!
Hey guys!! I've got two ranchus, they're about 2.5in but I'm looking for a hob filter that'll last for when they're big guys aswell, any suggestions? I have a 29gal but I know that I should be looking for a filter meant for bigger tanks cause their bioload is massive, currently have the 30gal top fin hob filter but replaced the filter cartridge with filter media. I'm in Canada:)
So I'm looking to upgrade to a 450 liter tank but the stand that comes with it is hideous to say the least and I was wondering what people who also have a 450 liter or similar tank are using as a stand seeing as it needs to hold three quarters of a metric tonne.
I’ve seen people putting roots of pothos in their tanks for it to grow out of, would my commons just tear them up or eat the roots?
It's been like that since my mom got it, but I assumed it was because it was so small that the pellets wouldn't fit in its mouth. It's now clearly big enough but it's mouth barely opens? What should I do? They were both the same size when we got them and now one is nearly twice the size, they do fight over food a bit
As I didn’t know what it was at the time, I inadvertently removed an anchor worm from one of the 4 new fish we are quarantining. They seem to be healing up fine. However, another of the 4 has their own anchor worm now on their dorsal fin. How do I go about treating it?
All water levels are good.
I recently inherited two goldfish from a friend who could no longer care for them and they seem to be doing well but they don’t eat a whole lot of their food and I tried to feed them some blanched lettuce and boiled carrots and they seemed interested but never ate any of it, maybe one of them took a small bite of one of the pieces but that was it. Any care tips? They are pretty small maybe 3 inches. They were originally state fair fish and are less than a year old.
I’d like to premise this post by saying these fish were not something I was equipped to take on. I’m a reptile keeper, but have always tried to shy away from aquatics because it’s seemed daunting to me.
Unfortunately, my family has purchased a new home and the old owners left behind the comet goldfish they claimed they were going to take with them. I’m extremely worried about the welfare of these fish. It’s hard to tell in the photo, but the pond they live in is green at this point and smells awful. Whatever filtration system they might have had at this point no longer seems to function. I also imagine the pond needs to be much bigger. I don’t know too much about comet goldfish, but I do know they’re extremely active and require a lot of space to swim both because of their activity and because of the amount of ammonia they produce.
I desperately want to fix their living situation, but I’ll need help. Any advice I can get is extremely appreciated. I believe there are about 4-5 fish in there, but it’s hard to tell. I need a starting point on care, what to do, and what to buy them. For starters, I’ve upgraded their food and have been offering them a wide variety of live/freeze dried insects when they get fed. Any other information you may need to help me I can give! Just ask me in the comments!
