He Stopped Loving Her Today

Just curious: does anyone subscribe to this subreddit not like “He Stopped Loving Her Today”?

I was talking with someone who said they didn’t like the song. I wouldn’t say it’s my absolute favorite song, but it’s fine.

I concur; Spotify is better

There’s atleast 2 absolute gold George Jones albums on Spotify that aren’t on Apple Music, including many songs that you can’t find anywhere on Apple Music. The Wrong Number and Don’t Let Me Cross Over albums from 72 are an example. Some notable songs that I highly recommend listening to if you haven’t already are Half Of Me Is Gone, I Can’t Get Used To Being Lonely, When Love Was Green, I Stopped Living Yesterday, and Who’ll Turn Out the Lights.

Thoughts on You oughta be here with Me

To me this is George’s peak vocal performance where his voice is at its absolute richest and his phrasing the most exquisite.

Yet, somehow, it seems to have been sorely overlooked (I can only assume it’s cause it’s undiluted sound is for the purists who dig deeper into his catalogue, hence why finding this album feels more like finding a diamond in a rough).

What do y’all think of the album?

This is definitely not an album I’d introduce a friend to his music with though, that’s for sure. As I said, it’s truly for the purists (ala “I’m Over You” on the it don’t get any Better than this album).

I’ve found a lot of people especially fond of his early works, which I somewhat am, but for me, 1983 onward his voice just aged like a fine wine, and his phrasing would only get better.

He knew just what he intended to do and make of every line and spin he intended to sing it, only in his idiosyncratic way that would make others shudder trying to make it pass for natural.

Up for Auction: Autographed George Jones Guitar

Normally I don't post, but this seems like something this community may be interested in- it's an autographed George Jones Guitar that is coming up. Auction's for this particular set of auctions close in about two days from when I post this- roughly 8pm on Thursday, May 2, 2024

The auction house is located just north of Indianapolis in Muncie, Indiana, but will ship if needed. Guitar has Certificate of Authenticity and looks really nice- I've seen it in person. Posting this for family:

For Sale

Sadly I need to come up with enough money to replace my windshield so I am parting with my George Jones and The Jones Boys satin jacket that he personally gave me on stage in Jackson, Tennessee way back on 1990. If you are interested PLEASE message me and we can work out all the details!!

George Jones and the one man band

I asked Chat GPT-4 to write a George Jones style song about a drunken masturbation session. Following is what it produced:

(Verse 1) In the dim light of a tavern room, where the shadows dance and play, There's a lonely man on a barstool, drowning his sorrows away. He's got a bottle in his left hand, and his right's under the table, Just a solo act in this lonely scene, playing as long as he's able.

(Chorus) He's polishing the banister, in the dim neon light, Finding solace in the bottle, and the quiet of the night. He's a one-man band in a honky-tonk land, where the whiskey flows like a river, Praying to the gods of loneliness, for a sweet release to deliver.

(Verse 2) The jukebox plays a sad ol' song, about love that's lost its way, Echoing the rhythm of his heart, in a melancholy play. Whiskey whispers sweet nothings, in a language only he understands, As he's shaking hands with the governor, guided by his own hands.

(Chorus) He's wrestling the one-eyed snake, lost in the amber haze, In the comfort of his solitude, in his self-induced daze. He's a one-man show in this rodeo, where the barroom's his arena, Drowning in a sea of bourbon, in the arms of his senorita.

(Outro) As the sun peeks over the horizon, and the barkeep calls out last round, He's still at it, all alone, no other soul to be found. In the end, he's his own best friend, in the silence of the twilight, Chasing shadows and ghosts, all through the drunken night.

(Chorus) He's polishing the banister, lost in the amber haze, Finding solace in the bottle, in his self-induced daze. He's a one-man band in a honky-tonk land, where the whiskey flows like a river, Praying to the gods of loneliness, for a sweet release to deliver.
