Generation X was born, by broadest definition, between 1961 and 1981, the greatest anti-child cycle in modern history. Nevertheless, we grew up to become the world's most devoted parents: the "workhorse of America." This sub welcomes links, photos,

graphics, memoirs, commentaries, stories, etc., for and about Gen-Xers, the 13th Generation of Americans. GenX also translates to many other parts of the world.

We are Generation X.

Generation X refers to adults born (by broadest definition) between 1961 and 1981.

Help build this community by posting links or stories relevant to the Generation X age cohort. Boomers and Millennials are also welcome to post here as long as the content is relevant to Generation X.

Gen X difficulty communicating in a Gen Z world

I just made a sincere post seeking advice about language related to gender and my adult Gen Z kid. The mods took it down. I tried to respond but apparently responses to mod comments aren’t allowed, so I’ll put what I wrote here. BTW I’ve been contributing to this sub for years and I want to be a good community member. I also want to be a bit subversive and challenge people’s ideas, because of course I’m Gen X to the core.

——

This is relevant but I didn’t make it explicit. I am a Gen X parent of a Gen X kid. My generation would say “daughter,” but things have changed. My Gen Z adult kid is nonbinary, which didn’t exist when I was their age. If I use Gen X language, it will raise issues with Gen Z. So I try to use more up to date language, but I don’t know how because I’m Gen X. Got it? Do I need to state all this explicitly in the post?

Or is this strictly a nostalgia sub? In which case I’ll try to tie it into The Breakfast Club.

This is now the THIRD time you people have deleted a thread of mine. Phone book excitement IS a Gen X thing. WTF? But you allow these endless posts of "My eyesight is fading" and "My back hurts" and talking about kids. How the fuck is that "PERTENENT" to JUST Gen X??? Seems like you pick and choose. IDGAF, I'll just not post. This is online, not high school. Do I also have Saturday detention? LAMMEEEE!!

If there was some form of this Spotify Wrapped in the 80s and 90s, what would yours say?

I am not aure how many of us out there use Spotify frequently, but this Wrapped feature gives you stats about your listening habits at the end of the year. My wrapped doesn't really represent the music I listened to this year because Spotify was a smaller part of it relative to vinyl and streaming radio.

It did get me thinking, I wonder what it would be like if something told me the # of CDs I listened to over my formative years, which song I listened to the most and how many artists did I hear or hours did I spend listening to commercial radio?

It probably would have made this measley 550 hours look like Tinker Toys.

I am pretty sure mine would tell me that in 1993 alone I listened to 1,500 of Queen.

What are your thoughts? What would yours say?

For the record, my wife's 2024 Spotify Wrapped top 5 artists included all 90s alternative bands.

Free streaming TV has some old shows and they are hilarious to watch

I just happened to come across the Bionic Woman TV series and chose an episode to watch. Good God, it is awful. But it is SOOOO awful that it’s bringing back memories and I’m here for it. Jamie Sommers tearing a phone book in half is such an iconic scene in my head. You don’t have to, or need to, watch the entire episodes, but go watch one episode of a forgotten fave. OH, HOW TV HAS CHANGED!!!

Got figuratively punched in the nuts twice today

  1. Was walking between the cubicles from my desk to the bathroom for a quick wizz and saw a piece of candy on the ground. I bent over quick, picked it up and sat it on the edge of the nearest desk. Couple seconds later I walk by the receptionist and she's like "Oh you kinda disappeared for a second, I got worried!".

Wtf dude?!

  1. Go to the grocery store and buy a ton (like $400) of sh!t, including a case of beer. Cashier asks me my bday, and as usual, I made up a random date in '72. Once she totals everything up I see the coupons/discounts flash by on the screen, and all of the sudden like 40 times "Senior Discount" flashes by. I'm not mad about the $ it saved, but still?!? I looked on the receipt to see what bday he put in for the alcohol, and it just says "XXX / XX / XXXX". As soon as I got home I checked their website and yeah senior discount for 55+ first Wednesday of every month. Either she was being nice or didn't believe my random 1972 date?!?

F me gently with a chainsaw!!!

Old Fashioned Gen X Foods

Are there any food/snacks/treats that you still eat, that your kids think is old-fashioned? I get side eyes for cheddar cheese on my apple pie...

I remember seeing a bowl of humbugs at my grandmas and my dad loving mince-meat pie, and thinking they were "old-fashioned". What's our cross to bear?

Ultimate Gen X?

We Didn’t Start the Fire. Billy Joel. I loved this so much as a late Gen X. I learnt the lyrics. Looked up the references in actual encyclopaedias. For the US references I didn’t know.

Fallout’s cover is fucking brilliant. Unfortunately I’m too old and I know all references. Musically the cover is still brilliant. What do you think?

Does anyone still use printed yellow pages?

Got this in the mail today. There’s no search bar and they don’t even have customer reviews!

I threw it directly in the recycling bin and then opted out online. We’ll see what that brings.

These are the most streamed 1980's songs today; does it surprise you which ones had this longevity and popularity? Many weren't monster hits in the 80's as I recall

I am looking for a WSJ article on GenX'ers in the early 80s'

I am trying to find a particular article from the Wall Street Journal. I remember it from 1982, possibly 1983. Unfortunately, this was just before they started to digitize the records.

The gist of the article was a prediction that Gen X’ers would not “get started” until they hit their forties and fifties due to Boomers not being expected to retire early.

I was pretty sure that my father clipped and archived it after I pointed it out to him. However, when I went looking for it my mother told me that she had thrown out, “all that old stuff.”

Has anyone else seen this article? Can someone point me to it? Yes, I have tried the usual google searches and searching on the WSJ site.
