Cheap Food

Does anyone know any restaurants in the Richardson or Garland area that have good lunch and dinner deals? I'm looking for different fast food places with deals and small restaurants with something cheap since I'm a college student. Does anyone have any good spots to check out?

Desperately Need A Job

Hey everyone, I'll start this off by being completely honest: I'm in a really bad spot and desperately need help.

I moved to the area back in March from PA, and landed my first job in May. Unfortunately I was blindsided and laid off back in mid August. I started a new job on Monday, but everything about it is terrible, with a 34 mile commute to boot. My wife is expecting, I'm over week behind on my car payment, and we were only able to pay half of our rent on the 1st.

I am FREAKING out with how rapidly things are falling apart and for some reason I'm having a really difficult time finding jobs that will actually call me for an interview. Unfortunately I don't have any connections down here for a referral or a good word to get my foot in the door. Is there anyone here that might have an opening at their job that can get me in? I live on the border of Plano and Richardson, I have 8 years of forklift experience (5 as a trainer), I was a QC inspector at a CNC shop at the job that laid me off, I've worked in bottled water manufacturing, cold storage, retail, and have some management experience. I'm an extremely fast learner and highly adaptable, I just need a chance at a fresh start.

TIA

Vet Recommendations

Hi all. I’m looking for a vet for our 3 kittens and dog. Do you have any that you love and can suggest? I’m trying to find someplace that isn’t corporate owned, but from what I keep seeing, that’s a bit of a challenge. Thanks!

Looking for work

Anyone looking to hire a well educated individual with over 10 years of experience in customer service and roughly 7 years of experience in public libraries in the garland area? I have a BA in English and a MLS.

I am skilled at helping people, providing excellent customer service, organizing data, general library work (collection development, organizing programs, etc...), and time managment.

I check job boards frequently, but figured I had nothing to lose by asking on here. (Mainly regarding non-library work)

What is considered private property vs public

I own a property which has a creek running along one side. My other family member owns the lot next to it on the other side of the creek and their entire property has a creek running along the side we share. Had some kids trying to jump a fence to get into the creek and we overheard them saying the creek is public. However I would think having to jump a fence the city allowed us to put up to get into said “public domain” would be considered trespassing. Can anyone with actual knowledge of this reply??

My neighbor has the most annoying dogs

I am looking for guidance on what to do about reporting my neighbors dogs. They have no business having that many dogs and they leave them outside ALL NIGHT. They bark for hours (no exaggeration) and it’s so bad around 1 am - 4 am. What is the right way to go about reporting to the city? I really don’t like confrontation, and I know they know their dogs are annoying. My sleep is destroyed as is my toddlers. any advice is appreciated!

Principal Mismanages Library in Garland ISD-Priorities Screens Over Shelving and Books

I'm writing this because our community needs to know what's happening at one of our local elementary schools in Garland ISD. The principal at Southgate recently removed essential shelving from the library with plans to replace it with big-screen TVs. Yes, you read that right—TVs, in a library. We even have the renderings from the vendor to prove that this was his initial goal. When asked where all the books would go, his response was chilling: "The kids aren’t reading. Throw them away. Perimeter shelving takes up too much room."

Not only does this show an alarming disregard for the importance of books and reading, but it also completely sidelines the school librarian, who is the only person in the building with the degree and certification to make informed decisions about the library space. Yet, this principal has refused to even give district librarians a seat at the table in meetings regarding these changes. As a result, the library is now cramped and barely functional, with little room for students to move around, let alone easily access books.

To cover up this disastrous decision, he’s trying to save face by hosting events with the local public library to make it seem like he actually supports libraries. But the community sees through this. He’s using bond money for these flashy, impractical changes, including the purchase of two 3D printers. And while 3D printers can be great educational tools, let’s be real—librarians didn’t get master’s degrees just to spend their days printing plastic toys for kids.

This principal’s priorities are completely out of line, and it’s our responsibility to call out these misguided decisions before they further erode our children’s access to quality educational resources. The public needs to understand what’s really happening here. The folks higher up who approved this should also be ashamed.

Is the area around the lake ok?

My wife and I currently live in Richardson but have been thinking about downsizing to a condo. There are some nice looking ones around the lake; I’m just wondering what that area is like in general. The zip would be 75043. We aren’t originally from here and have lived in DFW since 2009; but it’s so big and there’s almost too much to choose from.

New ProPublica investigation into one of America's biggest auto lenders

Byard Duncan here, a reporter at the nonprofit investigative newsroom ProPublica. I and my co-reporter Ryan Gabrielson spent a year investigating Exeter Finance, one of the largest subprime auto lenders in the U.S.

Our story is out today. I’m sharing here (with the blessing of the mods) because I thought members of this community might be interested. Exeter is based in Irving, Texas. https://propub.li/4gphD7E

My team and I also built a free calculator tool that helps consumers understand the hidden cost of deferring car loan payments. Check that out here: https://propub.li/47mt8bW

If you have an experience/expertise you’d like to share, please feel free to do so using the form at the bottom of our story. We read everything that comes in.
