The Gambia is Africa's most fascinating nation, a tiny state that simply runs along the coast of a small river. Created by the British Commonwealth, it is one of the few English-speaking Muslim countries in the world. It is enclosed by the larger nation of Senegal on all sides, except that it fronts on the Atlantic Ocean. Its chief exports are fabrics, coconuts and lumber, and the national sport is wrestling.

Spinster/Bachelor Certificate

Hello. Does anyone have a copy of an official Spinster/Bachelor Certificate they can post (names redacted of course). I have a sister-in-law who I believe fell for a marriage scam and I'm pretty sure the document provided is a fake and want to verify. Thank you.

2,000 Dalasi

Hi I have a question.

Is 2,000 Dalasi enough for a family to buy meals for a week?

If not how much would be a good amount?

It feels like this sub is more for European tourists who like beaches, bars, and getting women more than about the true country.

People seem to get upset at the mention that there is people suffering or poor. They would rather pretend they’re all atheist beach going Rastafarian Horse-riders. They downvote anything they see as destroying the imagine of Gambia being some little chunk of the Caribbean.

BoreHole Project

Hi guys,

Me and my husband are raising money to repair some boreholes in a village close to Bansang- Sambatako. We'll mainly be fundraising in the UK.

Does anyone have any experience with this/ advice on how to properly raise these funds with the aim of a couple self sustaining borehole that can be used by the school and the local women for their garden?

Thanks :)

Do Gambians always ask for $?

Not to be rude, but I’ve met some Gambian people online, and they always seem to end up asking for money. Is it really that bad there?

Looking for an English Srabble in Banjul?

Good afternoon everyone. I will be coming to the Gambia via Senegal next week and I would really appreciate your help to point me towards a place where I might find an English version of the Scrabble board game for sale. I would like to get it for as a gift for a friend and they just don't exist in Dakar. Thank you so much and have a good day.

Entrance fee

Hey I want to go to gambia next week cause I'm now in senegal. I have a German passport and I don't need a visa for visiting gambia. But I heard that there are no visa rules any more and that every visitor has to pay an entrance fee of about 130$. Can someone confirm or deny? Thanks

WTF is wrong with you Gambia?!?

Bringing back genital mutilation?!?!

Be better than a sucker for populist power grabs. Be better for your women, and women all over the world.

This is a disgrace

Aromatic bark/dried root thing

Hello

On my trip to The Gambia I recently bought a little bag of aromatic bark. The storekeeper gave it to me "out of the menu" because I asked about the smell. Supposedly its smoke is believed to get rid of evil when put on fire. I thought it's maybe a common thing there. Bit nobody on my trip encountered it. There is no info to be found on the web.

Can anyone help me find out what is the name of the plant?

Yellow fever

I'm travelling from UK to Gambia in the rainy season. I've got typhoid and tetanus vaccinations sorted but I'm not eligible for Yellow Fever due to other medical stuff and it being a live vaccine.

Has anyone got much experience with going there without the YF vaccine? Is it a real risk?

Thanks

Which Gambian dish should I cook?

Which Cuban dish should I cook?

I am learning to cook. I live in Hungary. But to make it interesting, I decided to try to make foreign countries' dishes, in random order.

What do you recommend from Gambia?

Advice please!

Hi, I’m thinking of going to the Gambia in a couple of weeks. I would be very grateful for some advice. Could you please tell me if there are any mosquitoes around now because I don’t like taking medication, so malaria pills are a concern. Is it necessary to get a yellow fever vaccine? Would it be safe to walk around as a solo female near Kafountine or Gunjur if I stay there? Finally, would it be offensive to eat out during the day during Ramadan? Sorry for all the questions, I would love to go but have read some negative things so I’m a little nervous

Green tomatoes in The Gambia

I visited The Gambia a couple of times and I noticed that most tomatoes that are sold in the markets or served in restaurants and hotels are either green or half red half green. I was wondering why that is. Why don't people wait for the tomatoes to ripen?

I am seeking to get a Residency Card/Visa for standing in Gambia. Wanting to study with the Imam in my friends village.

I am hoping to spend some time in Gambia with my friend and his family in their village, I have wanted to come so I can spend time studying Islam and study Mandinka with my friends village. I am an America from New York City, currently I’ve been researching on how to move to Gambia, but I’m struggling with finding a good source for information.

Gift giving

I'm travelling to Gambia in a few days and would like to gift the family I will be staying with. Trouble is I have no idea what would be practical for them. They don't have young kids and are a Muslim family. I'm from Scotland and thought maybe a Scottish themed gift like a tartan blanket/shawl.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks in advance
