Tinker and Luke’s relationship

Doing my annual rewatch and I’m just now, noticing that the real best friends on Seasons 4&5. Were Tinker and Luke not Vince and Luke.

The whole "East Dillon/West Dillon" zoning thing...

...huge plot point with the Luke Cafferty situation. Plus other kids being pulled out of their classes and told they had to go to East. The part I don't understand is, Julie then decides on her own she's going to go to East because all her remaining friends are there. Why was she allowed to do that when the policy was so rigid and unyielding for the others?

Extra sees herself on screen (presumably)

Rewatching from season 1 and out of the corner of my eye I saw this extra make this face during Tammy’s speech at the roast - the sombre part. She saw herself on screen surely?!

Names

Things that will always make me laugh: Tim Riggins calling other players by their squad numbers. Bo always calling Tim Riggins 'Tim Riggins'. Coach Taylor calling Landry 'Lance'.

QB1

why on earth is the coach so against making voodoo QB1 am i missing something? i understand wanting matt to succeed but if there is a better player surely they should choose him? i think i’m kinda biased because as a dancer if you aren’t picking up choreo correctly and the competition is near dance teachers won’t make you as visible as everyone else you might even be cut from the majority of the routine.

Just Finished My Rewatch

So, like the title says I just finished my full rewatch, mostly sparked by the news that Kyle Chandler was cast in Lanterns. Here are a few stray thoughts that I had throughout the series. These are mostly new thoughts or things I felt before but we're reinforced.

  • Eric and Tami's relationship is the backbone of the series. Every scene they have together is magic. The actors have fantastic chemistry and they are for sure the best part about this show.

  • Julie fucking suuuuuucks in season 2. I understand the "realistic teenager" argument that everyone makes for her, and to some extent I agree. But wow, she's just a pain to watch. She's just torching everyone around her. Idk if there's some sort of redemption at the end of S2 that they couldn't get to, but man she just sucks.

  • I think the series loses some of its, for lack of a better word, Texas-ness (?) as it goes on. There's less of the high school football being a monolith in a small town like it was in S1.

  • I like how the series found ways to semi-realistically cause job turmoil for Eric and Tami. Eric being ousted because he's had success and that means a higher paying contract, and Wade being a first time HC with a contract that mirrors that makes sense. Plus Joe McCoy not liking him was another factor. Tami being essentially fired from being principal for not apologizing was also understandable, even if the thing she was supposed to apologize for was stupid.

  • Man, the one huge criticism I have about this series is that they loved to just waste time on shit they never planned to stick around. S1 is perfect I have no complaints. S2, I understand the writer's strike so I'm a little more forgiving. But from S2-S5; there's the Tyra-Landry relationship that goes nowhere, the McCoy's are set up as antagonists for the series and they just disappear in S5, Buddy's inner turmoil over what's right (ED) and what's in his heart (WD) is just abandoned after a few episodes and he doesn't even try to go back after the McCoy's presumably leave Dillon in S5, the fucking artist subplot with Matt, Santiago, Jess-Landry, Lyla-Jesus Christ, Tim-SA State, Smash-Waverly.

  • One more gripe, man does this show do so many ongoing storylines that just repeat themselves. Luke-Becky, Tyra-Landry, Julie-her string of guys that she shouldn't be dating but does anyway, Julie being pissed that she has a little sister, Vince's dad being a deadbeat. I'm not even saying these storylines are bad, but they seem to go on forever.

  • I love Coretta Williams, Smash's mom. She's great. I love Matt's gma, even though she can be annoying sometimes but that's kinda the charm of her.

  • There's absolutely no way Buddy didn't smash Tyra's mom again. No way.

  • I think the best character (of the kids) arc in the whole show, with the most consistent storylines that layer onto the others is surprisingly...Smash. He goes from being a narcissistic selfish player to being about the team and fighting for off the field rights. His arc with (idk remember her name) that leads to him losing scholarships is a good twist on the great player that doesn't plan for his future but loses out on scholarships because of injury trope. He gives up on himself and for the first time considers doing something else other than football (Alamo Freeze). But with Eric's help he regains his confidence in himself and in his ability. You can see why he is successful at Texas A&M.

  • I wanted more of Tim at the Taylor's home, that was fun and a highlight of S2. On the subject of Tim, always love his relationship with Billy.

  • The first two episodes of S4 are amazing. I love how much Stan Traub annoys Eric. Wished they would've done more with him being gay.

Dare I say the writers dropped the ball with Coach Taylor?

I’m a first-time watcher and just started season 3. I LOVED season 1, slogged through season 2, and now this season really feels like the show is getting its rhythm back.

But!! It seems like the writers give Coach a few things to do, which are: (1) be angry and yell, and (2) drop wisdom, with the occasional (3) flirt with Tami. I thought especially in S1, we saw him as a whole person. He was nervous about coaching well and delivering for the boosters, he was emphatic with the members of the team who needed him, and he had a patient, communicative relationship with Tami. In the time since, we don’t get nearly as much of that perspective. Does the show ever recover the inspiration and wholesomeness of the first season, specifically with regard to Coach??

First time watcher

Just finished the series for the first time. Wow. So many thoughts. First of all, what a great series. You really connect with most of the characters. A couple a big points for me

  • Tim and Tyra coming full circle was so fufulling. Tim's character arc was the best in the series hands down.

  • normally series that are Campy and dramatic turn me off, but they had the right balance of that and realisim and I freaking loved it.

So many little things, but as a guy who loves football and family, this show really hit home in a lot of ways. I will definitely rewatch

Smash Williams on a rewatch

It's been a few years, but I love Smash. Regardless of his pride, he's a hard worker. He parties and has fun but his focus is taking care of his family and put them in a better situation. His flaws in season 2 shines, but as a young man without a proper role model for months, I can forgive his pride. Season 3 shows how much he's grown post injury. But he always puts in the work.

PS, I know the spin off is controversial but I hope they focus on some defensive players.

The scene where Riggins is trying to pirate cable TV...

As a former broadband tech, I can verify that there is no way he could accidentally cause porn to start playing because of something he did wrong outside.

Just realised who this actor is!

Been seeing a lot of ads for this new show Cross on Amazon Prime, and the actor's face looked super familiar. It's Voodoo! Well pleased for him to get his own big show!

I wish Tyra and Julie talked about Landry in “Texas Whatever”

the scene when they’re on the truck talking about her relationship with matt, cause I feel like we never got closure on tyra and landry’s relationship? or am I forgetting

New reboot? (My ideas for a new show)

With the talk of the show being "rebooted", I thought I'd give my idea for a new generation of FNL. Tell me what you think!

Matt has a successful career but has always still been in love with football. East Dillon has a coaching vacancy and he wins the position. There's an up and coming freshman coming to ED who's said to be the best QB in the state of Texas, named Zane Riggins-Garrity, the son of Lila Garrity and Tim Riggins, who eventually married and then divorced.

Matt convinces Jason Street to be his offensive coordinator after Street has never found much success at the collegiate level of coaching.

Sparks reignite between street and garrity while Matt navigates trying to rebuild a state football powerhouse along dealing with the in and outs of his personal life.

Revealed a few episodes into the show, the team to beat in Texas high School football is a legacy team coached by none other than Coach Taylor.

I think this show would ROCK!

which just lends to its importance!

Whatchu all think Tim Riggins is listening to in his iPod before games on the bus (season 3)

You think he's on some classic shitkicker music, sad cowboy ballads, or some thrash metal? Personally, i think he's getting hyped up with some late era Sun Ra (/s)

EDIT: i think we get the surest, in-show evidence as either early black sabbath (as suggested in S.1) or whatever he is listening to in the tow truck of Ep.2 of Season 4.
